  • The Premis is Kwikset's first entry into the world of devices powered by Apple's HomeKit home automation technology, but it's certainly not their first smart lock. Overall, it's a solid performing remote-control smart lock, and the front touchscreen is an added bonus!

    Pretty good review, but we can use some discussion on the blue tooth connection. That seems to be the weakest link in a lot of these smart locks. This is an issue when an Apple TV is not located close enough to the lock.
    Often the front of back door lock will not be close to an Apple TV. This issue needs to be discussed more.
    A very good solution would be for the lock to have a wifi connection instead of, or in addition to bluetooth.

      @SmarterHomeLife  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your kind words. Bluetooth is generally chosen for battery-powered devices like locks, sensors and the like for longer battery life. There are few "smart" devices that are battery-operated that use Wi-Fi, for this reason. Bluetooth LE has a realistic range of 40-60 feet, although that can change based on walls, objects, etc. Bluetooth 5 was adopted in December by the Bluetooth organization as the new standard going forward, and products that will utilize it will have even longer range, better battery life and faster data rates. In the Smarter Home Life "home studios", for example, the Apple TV is roughly in the center of the home, and does get reasonably good signal even from the Elgato Eve Weather sensor. That sensor is located outside and mounted in a tree and is roughly 40 feet away from the ATV, and the Bluetooth signal has to go through at least one wall.
      As the "connected devices" / "smart home" category has grown rapidly in the past five years, some parts of the industry chose to adopt the existing Bluetooth standard instead of coming up with their proprietary standards...at least for HomeKit and some other segments. There are, however, an array of battery-powered sensors that use existing, dedicated standards like Zigbee and Z-Wave. Apple chose not to use them for HomeKit, most likely for maximum compatibility with existing iOS devices and other Apple products.
      The industry continues to grow rapidly, and competition is both helping and hurting it at the same time. It will still take some time, at least another 1-2 years, to start to see the real winners appear, and some industry consolidation that will result in more widely-accepted standards. Until then, it is (sadly) a bit of a mess.

    The error when locking seems to happen when the deadbolt encounters too much friction. My accessone deadbolt has the same problem. The fix is simple but a pain. You have to make sure that the strike plate on the handle holds the door so that the center is perfectly lined up with the deadbolt above. If it's off even a tiny amount you get resistance or worse the deadbolt bumps up against the strike plate which causes it to retract. The accessone that I own has been out for almost 15 years, you would think that after 15 years of making electronic deadbolts Kwikset would have figured out a fix.

    • @SmarterHomeLife
      @SmarterHomeLife  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That does make sense, truly. But it's really weird, because there is zero friction with this lock's deadbolt as installed, whether the door is open or closed. I tend to think it's really an over-sensitive position encoder/sensor. It fully extends (throws) the deadbolt, so I just don't get it :-/

    • @SmarterHomeLife
      @SmarterHomeLife  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For apartments, the August smart lock and the new Friday smart lock are great, since they just replace the inside portion and don't require you to re-key and all that stuff. Also, Kwikset just introduced the Kevo Convert, which looks similar to the Premis on the inside, and it's also a "conversion" smart lock and keeps your existing key and deadbolt intact :-)

    Great video on this lock system. Quick question. I'd like to use this system in our small office building ... maybe 10 locks. Can all of them be controlled by a single app on my iPhone? or do I have to have a separate app for each lock? Thanks

    • @SmarterHomeLife
      @SmarterHomeLife  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your kind words on the review! Yes, there shouldn't be any trouble in controlling all of them from the Home app or another HomeKit-enabled app. However, to control them from away from your building you'd need an Apple TV to "bridge" the locks back to your iPhone. Otherwise, you'd only be able to access them when in Bluetooth range of the locks.

    When you get the jam indication, can you open and close the lock through the app to unjam it? Or do you need physical access to the lock to un jam it? My concern is that it jams when I am not home or traveling.

    Excellent review. Do you like this better than the August?

    • @SmarterHomeLife
      @SmarterHomeLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I've since switched back to the August. I did really like the keypad function, but the lock itself was so finicky about being "fully" locked and it would beep and error a lot at certain times of the year based on the doors swelling a bit. The August seems to be more accommodating as it runs its calibration.

  • @tjam4229

    Is there a quick way to explain the differences between zigbee, z-wave, and whatever the premis lock uses?
    What smart lock would you recommend for best features , reliability, notifications, online usage?

    • @SmarterHomeLife
      @SmarterHomeLife  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's tough to explain all of that in a TH-cam comment. Zigbee & Z-Wave are dedicated home automation communications systems with dedicated radios, setup to be a stronger network as more devices are added. HomeKit is a proprietary mix of highly-encrypted Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth communications. Unfortunately they're really apples and oranges. Advising on smart locks is equally challenging, there are "convert models" like the August smart lock where you don't change your deadbolt, and others like Premis, Schlage Sense, etc.. where you change the entire lock.

    Does this lock require any type of wireless home setup or hub?

    • @SmarterHomeLife
      @SmarterHomeLife  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. If you'd like to access it from outside your home, then yes. But otherwise for basic control from your iPhone, the lock is the only thing you need. In an ideal world, you should have Wi-Fi setup at home for your iPhone and other wireless devices but that isn't required with this lock.

    • @SmarterHomeLife
      @SmarterHomeLife  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There isn't necessarily an "Android" version, but Kwikset does make other smart locks (links in description / article) that work with other home automation systems vs HomeKit. Another good choice is the August smart lock, which can work directly with Google Assistant and Amazon's Alexa.

    Do you feel like it drains your phones battery life , due to constant on Bluetooth.

    • @SmarterHomeLife
      @SmarterHomeLife  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. The Bluetooth connection between devices like these goes into a sleep or low-power mode after a period of inactivity. It still remains "paired" to the phone via HomeKit but isn't always in a "constant connected" state. Personally, I haven't experienced any significant battery life decrease with any of the HomeKit or other Bluetooth-based home automation devices over the years.

    I was wondering can we add and delete user codes when we are away from home if we do not have Apple TV? To elaborate, I know I can add/delete user codes through the Premis app, but would the lock receive that change immediately just through the app? Or does doing anything away from home must be through Apple TV?

    • @SmarterHomeLife
      @SmarterHomeLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue is that the Premis user codes have to be managed from their app, which can only communicate to the lock over Bluetooth. The Apple TV "relay" connection can sadly only be used for HomeKit control.

    • @SmarterHomeLife
      @SmarterHomeLife  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessarily, as they can be for different applications. The August is a smart lock upgrade device for those who don't want to replace their entire lock. The Kwikset Premis replaces the entire lock, but also has special features like the touchscreen which make it a more capable device. It really comes down to your needs. It's not quite an apples to apples comparison.

    Hi, thanks for the great review. I am wondering is it like the usual kevo lock, which the lock status can only be retrieved if we are nearby with bluetooth connected? It is impossible to remotely control it or to know if someone opens the door? Same questions go to August smart lock, but it seems like we still can buy August Connect for remote control and IFTTT.

    • @SmarterHomeLife
      @SmarterHomeLife  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This particular model is still Bluetooth-only. But, if you have an Apple TV 3rd gen or newer, it will act as the bridge to your network so you can check the status via your iPhone when not near the lock. August now operates the same way for those in the Apple world, and otherwise needs the Connect device for remote access. Kwikset also makes other versions that look identical to the Premis for Z-Wave and Zigbee, which can connect to SmartThings, Wink, and other hubs.

      Hmm...well by default it will "bridge" to other HomeKit devices via any iOS device (iPhone, iPad, etc.) But to get control of the Kwikset Premis from outside your home's network you'd need an Apple TV. Hope that answers your question :-)

    • @ivanjo6478
      @ivanjo6478 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the kwikset is wifi capable? There's no hub such as samsung smartthings or any other hub to connect the kwikset to Apple Homekit?

    • @SmarterHomeLife
      @SmarterHomeLife  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry if somehow if perhaps it was not clear in the video. The Premis is just Bluetooth, no Wi-Fi is onboard. This particular lock only works with HomeKit, but Kwikset makes identical versions of this lock that work with Zigbee and Z-Wave, which do work with SmartThings and other hubs that support those technologies. No one currently makes a hub that can cross-connect HomeKit devices to other HomeKit devices other than Apple - the Apple TV. Do you know if they fixed the SmartKey vulnerability in this lock? I see that this uses the smartkey system, and that vulnerability is what kept me from going with a Kevo for my front door. Info about that vulnerability th-cam.com/video/H1mmjVvMsGs/w-d-xo.html
    Also, do you know if there is any smart lock system like August that works with Medeco Maxum deadbolts? I have been wanting to get the August, but I know it doesn't work with Medeco. And I wasn't wanting to get rid of the Medeco for security and cost reasons.

      Suffice it to say, the video you linked to doesn't quite tell the entire story, and its comments show it. There is no lock that is completely safe. The fact is that dedicated lock-picking / forcing tools are not readily available. Kwikset and other companies design their locks, both with and without their "quick re-key" technologies, to be as safe as possible with generic tools. If someone truly wants to get into a building, they'll probably just go through another entry point instead of attempting to pick the lock.
      There are some newer smart locks coming onto the market that are "conversion" locks like August. The Friday lock is now shipping, and the Sesame lock is about to begin shipping. Also available is the Kevo Convert, which looks like the interior portion of the Premis but doesn't require the deadbolt & front portion itself to be changed out.

    Bought one of these cause the Wife wanted a stainless body and the tech this lock comes with. Just south of $300 Canadian pesos. Went to install it yea I am a 52 year old yea old mechanic. Could not get the d shaped shaft to align between the lock set and the driver. The driver was clocked 180 out of time with the lock set. Oh want this thing in the original packaging smashed it into the box took it back to home depot checked out the new one in the parking lot clocked correctly really some asshole on a Friday had an early start on the weekend. Dropped this shaft into the injection moulding machine 180 degrees out because he smoked a fatty on Thursday night. NOT FUCKING IMPRESSED. Anyways rainbows and unicorns new one fits and performs as promised. Wasted 3 hours out of my life for home improvement.

      Android would be smart to create an integrated home automation system similar to HomeKit, then it would be more of an exact comparison.
