So fun fact, I'm a little dumb. I totally mis read what the treasure hunting mod does and it turns out it also adds springs to levels making them easier. We'll just call this training wheels mode and when I get to Rouge I'll do it with the mod off
There's also an additional wrinkle that using the mod completely bypasses. Pumpkin Hill specifically has a check that ensures that 1 emerald always spawns in a place where you have to dig. The intention of this feature is to make sure the player picks up the shovel claw. When you pick up the shovel claw, it turns off this forced dig. However, this is buggy, because it only turns off the forced dig when you collect the shovel claw in the same visit to the level. If you come back to the level later, it will "forget" you collected it, and will force a dig once again. You won't be able to collect it again, because the item pickup properly remembers that it was collected. So, to make this possible, you would have to collect the shovel claw while playing as tails. I learned this from another challenge video that involved using 1 character to attempt all stages.
Interestingly enough, SA2 was originally going to have Tails playable without his mech, but once they had the idea to make Shadow a playable character instead of an unplayable antagonist, they came up with the whole heroes vs dark thing and shoved Tails in a mech to make him mirror Eggman. We got playable Shadow and Rouge at the cost of playable Tails.
@areakastudios6704 I might be misremembering then. I know for sure that Sonic, Knuckles, and Eggman were planned from the start of development, and that the Hero/Dark split came when they realized that people might want to play as Shadow.
Another TH-camr actually got pretty far into Prison Lane with mechless Eggman by activating Omochao and running quickly into the wall, which causes him to follow you fast enough to slingshot himself through the walls and kill the robots on the other side
@@IGSA101 It seems like that should be backwards. Especially since mechless Eggman is only for the chao garden. Why did they make him SO fast!? 😭 Meanwhile Tails has had the same speed as Sonic in every other game up until that point. (I guess classic Robotnik is too when Sonic chases him in Sonic 2, but still)
1:28 incorrect! He can use those in the base game to pull up not just himself, but his mech as well. Bro's upper body strength is unparalleled! That one was just slippery...
You might like to know that Pumpkin Hill actually makes all emeralds spawn above ground if you pick up the shovel claws for some reason. However, if you die after that or replay the stage after having the claws, then there will be one underground every time. It's a weird but neat fact for challenge runs.
Not to mention that in the SA1 shooting levels, the movement feels so much better because Gamma handles like any other character rather than as a bulky machine.
Pumpkin Hill is actually impossible without the mod (I believe). There's a "tutorial" that forces at least one (1) emerald to be buried. E.g. no way to die to reload the emeralds into a viable location.
I’m just about 8 minutes into the video but you do know you can just reset the Emerald shard hunting stages to get shard placements that aren’t as ass? Edit: yeah nvm he knew
i think more stages would be playable without glitches if you used tails moveset from sonic adventure 1, because that tails was only made to be played in chao gardens
Tails getting locked behind a mech was my biggest disappointment going from SA1 to SA2 as a kid. It also set a bad precedent for how Tails would be playable in later 3D games like Heroes and '06: Weak, slow, and/or boring compared to others when individually playable outside of a machine. Glad Frontiers finally started to turn some of this around.
Someone did make that mod, but they also purposely make it so that Tails can beat every stage. He can grind and use pulleys and they fixed the crashes, and make it so he can interact with all the stuff you're supposed to shoot with a mech. Vanilla mechless Tails is much more of an interesting challenge for a video
I believe hes using character select plus to place tails in the stages, however, if you'd like a smoother tails experience without cheesing or crashing, I'd suggest BetterMiles, made by Sora. It fixes a lot of the holdups Tails faces in the stages, and gives him extra abilities like rolling, tailswipe, bounce, and light dash (all toggleable, too!) He also gets a jumpball, grinding, and more traditional tails flight. It also minorly changes layouts of stages that would just be straight up impossible like mech stages.

The biggest reason why I like SA 1 more is that i don’t like the mech levels.
