  • In this video I go out to enjoy a bit of the fall in the Norwegian wilderness. I also bring along a new tent, the Olivin 2 from Tentipi. I give my first impressions of the tent and go trough a lot of the features.

      Very nice and calm video... I have had this tipi since it came out and it’s the best tent for two persons all seasons... extremely well made and very wind stable in storms in the mountains ...
      Comes highly recommended ...

      And a quick tip ... I use the length of the pole to measure out the six pegs positions... very easy ...

    Your videos are 'rare but choice!' Your presentation of each of your subjects is 'top class' TH-cam video work, with particular excellence in script and in videography. A 'whole bunch of us' around the world have missed your videos this summer.
    Your video review of this tent was very high quality for detail and for honesty. I never had great luck in the USA woods in pitching a floored tent on a high-grass site. But, bush crafters never carry something to trim high grass. My wife and I have always liked floored tents for 'wrap around' security from weather and from insects and whatever. The center pole concept...well, a camping couple can not really get warm with a pole separating them...but the setup is quick and simple. Shelter when it is cold, windy and wet is maybe more important than 'snuggles.' A bunch of us viewers look forward to your continued experience with this tent.

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the kind words. I will be using this tent on future trips/videos for sure. I guess the center pole is good when camping with a friend, not so much when camping with your wife... It seems really good so far :)

    Hey, welcome back. I've missed your calm voice. Had a fire-lighting fail in the woods today. Damp fatwood, and could not find a replacement material. Now I can watch someone who knows what he is doing!!!
    When you were showing the ventilation top from the outside, it reminded me of the sorting hat in the Harry Potter film. Griffendor!!

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for stopping by Ray. This is not the easiest time of the year to make fires in the woods.

    Happy New Year Martin! It's good to see you back - I've missed you.
    I have a small tipi tent at the moment that I am very happy with and have had a couple of others previously. I think these traditional designs have a great deal to recommend them.
    A useful tip is to have a small pad of some sort to put under the base of the pole to protect the floor and to stop the pole from sinking in soft ground.
    I think I may investigate Tentipi and I look forward to seeing your future videos on this model.
    Very best wishes,
    Noel

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for stopping by Noel. I do like the tent a lot so far. I will test out your tip. I do think it might be a challenge with the pole if the ground is really soft (or on snow). Tentipi has a lot of models. This is the smallest one.

    Superb video, thank you - you mention the ability of your tent manufacturer to organise a local repair for you, here in the UK, we seem gradually to have lost all those mending/repair shops we used to have, exactly as you say, due to the throw-away attitudes of most Western manufacturers; I remember about 15 years ago having worn away the heel area inside my boot, I took it to an old fashioned local cobbler (shoe repairer) and he fixed it so well, using some padding and his unique sewing skills, the boots lasted me another five years (of almost daily use). We seem to have allowed all these important skills to disappear, no one is being shown how to continue and so when the old guys pass-away, so do all their years of skill and most of the tools of their trade end up as antiques in other folks homes who don't even know how to use them - shame. I think what you have said is so important, thanks again.

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for stopping by Nick. I think it will be interesting to see if these old crafts gets popular again in the future. It looks like at least some people and companies appreciate these traditions. If there continues to be a market, I think at least some will keep going.

    Really missed your videos Martin so this is a nice start for 2018 thank you. I enjoyed this review and i love the tipi style over all the other ones. I am interested to see how it holds up to heavy rain or snow just generally bad conditions. I love the tent but at €900 i think it is out of most peoples budget,mine anyway for sure. That said keep the reviews on this coming as it is a very interesting design. Cheers and Happy New Year to you and yours from Eire.

    Excellent video Martin, and such a beautiful little lavvu. It also looks like the customer service department of Tentipi are to be commended for "keeping it real" and sending you to a traditional sailmakers shop to have the repair done, as sailmaking and tenting have always went hand in hand through the use of canvas. Good job Tentipi !

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for stopping by. The repair shop is called salmaker here in Norway. I believe that translates as saddle maker or saddler in English. We used to have a lot of them around. Sadly most of them are gone, like most things of the old world. It looks like Tentipi has strong roots in the traditional crafts. I like the lavvo a lot so far :)

    Nice tipi tent Martin, have to try it in snow :) Unfortunately as you know already this winter its gonna be close to impossible for me to get myself free for 4 or 5 days, but I could have an overnighter in the tresticklan area at the end of February or beginning of March if you up for it.. Nice to see you on a new vid, sorry I couldn't make it in Femundsmarka..Take care my friend// Mathieu

      Hello Mathieu. I hope we can do the trip to Femundsmarka next winter. They had temperatures way below -30C and a lot of snow up there this winter. I just want to mention that I have quit the whole Facebook thing, so we will have to keep in touch here on TH-cam from now on. Keep up the good work, and I hope to see you soon :)

    I wonder with the ventilation when it's raining vertically. It looks like you'd need to close the top cap, bu that would compromise ventilation in a situation where condensation is more likely?

    Hey hey.
    I love this kind of video. It shows more about nature than many other clips.
    But I would be really interested, about the weight of your backpack.
    With all that stuff (huge tent, sleeping bag, axe, fishing rod, food pp) ist must be at least about 20 kg or even more.
    Kepp on with this kind of movies. You did great. I like them.

    • @NorwegianWoods

      I guess that could work. Maybe I will try it at some point. It could be a way to save some weight to just bring the outer tent and make stakes like that in the woods.

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello my friend. The tent is 3,5kg, sleeping bag 2,5kg, sleeping mat 0,5kg and pillow weighs next to nothing. That is about 6,5kg total. Not super light weight but really manageable for moderate distance hikes.

    I really like the look of this tent! Do they make a canvas version? I was thinking of getting the army poncho type in canvas with a wood stove in mind so might get one from Tentipi if they do. Great vids by the way, just a wee bit jealous of your back yard! Not quite so rugged here in the U.K unless you head up to the highlands! Cheers/skal!

    • @NorwegianWoods

      Skål my friend! Some of their larger models are made of a canvas fabric. They are well suited for stoves. I feel blessed by the nature I have in my backyard :)

    Can you use trekking poles in the middle to reduce weight?

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess you could. The aluminium pole is not all that heavy. I usually don't use trekking poles so I guess the one I got with the tent will do. Maybe making one out of a stick would save some weight.

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for stopping by. I have tried a few different diets over the years. The thing that has worked best for me so far is some good old farm work. I got a new job on a farm a little while after I started making these videos, and I suddenly started to lose weight. I do think a change in daily routines and lifestyle works better than fancy diets :)

      The tent seems to be really good. I do believe it will last me a long time. I had plans to take it on a couple of trips this winter, but it didn't work out as I planned. That had nothing to do with the tent. I will use it more this summer and next winter for sure :)

      Carl Brown There’s really not much. Martin said they have boars in the area, you have moose and adder.And you may run into an European brown bear or maybe even a wolf, but they’re both pretty shy. Common sense is plenty enough, and then you have your belt knife. And often an axe for the firewood The main problem is the cold and unpredictable weather.

    • @yvindnilsen94
      @yvindnilsen94 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the most dangerous animal you can meet is probably the scandinavian moose. we have less than 150 brown bears in Norway.. there is also an estimation of less than 60 wolfes here more or less around southeastern Norway.. so if you actually meet a bear or a wolf here, you should consider yourself lucky.. we have more than 30000 moose, and they can be a bit defensive

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Carl. I don't bring anything for protection when I go camping. We don't have many animal attacks here in Norway. In my area we have some Moose, wild bore and wolves but I am not all that worried about them. I think the biggest danger is ticks in the summer months. In the fall I sometimes bring a gun for hunting. More videos are on the way :)

    So I have always been interested in the tenttepe. I was wondering if the center pole gets in the way. All modern tent designs always eliminate the center pole. What are the advantages of a center pole.

    • @haraldthi
      @haraldthi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark Hansen The only one I can think of is weight. But that’s of course a major issue.

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Mark. That is an interesting question. I am no expert but I do think this design might have some advantages over some of the other "modern" designs. It makes for a really simple pitch. Just one pole without any sleeves or other fancy things. It also makes a sturdy structure if the pegs are staying in the ground. The shape of these tents will hold up pretty good in stone winds. I do not think the centre pole will be much of problem. The tent is intended as a 2 person shelter. That is one on each side of the pole. The pole is also located a fair distance from the door, so it will not be in the way when getting people and gear in and out of the tent. The traditional "Lavvo" design has 13 poles and no centre pole. This makes place for a fireplace in the middle of the tent. If you want to have a fire in one of these newer variants, you will have to put it a bit to the side. I do think 1 pole is better for backpacking than 13... This was my first overnighter with this tent and I will mention it if it becomes an issue in the future.

    Great video Martin!! How long is your camp fire season in Norway? When does it end the spring? The only time that they ban fires where I live is when we are in a dry season with no rain. Once it rains for a few days we can have a camp fire or pit fire year round. I love natures TV.

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      KimVat is correct. The fire ban is from 15.april to 15.September. I live really close to Sweden. There they have similar laws to where you live. I also have a Solo Stove that I will use during the summer months.
      Thanks for watching - Martin

    • @Dark_Lobster
      @Dark_Lobster 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep in mind that these stoves will be considered as open flame and thus forbidden. There has been, however, an amendment to the rule, where it says that you can make fire if you can be certain that there are no fire hazard...typically when its been raining hard for quite some time, snow on the ground, down by the lake or using established camp/fire sites.

    • @getyourfitonproductions
      @getyourfitonproductions 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I pray that you get better laws to have open fire or in the firebox. Makes camping so much more enjoyable and useful.
