Hi Drs! I went to Japan recently too and picked up sunscreen. The spray from Suncut is better than the Biore, which I find spits at me. The Canmake sunscreen has 3 types now. FYI The green one is a newer type, it did not replace the original. I will try to get that scalp scrub when I return in January!
thanks for the update, I’m looking for a spray so I’ll look into it. as for Canmake, it used to be my favorite but they have recently changed the formula (even the untinted one) it now leaves a white cast, unfortunately.
I had been using the popular Korean Sunscreen Beauty of Josean Rice sunscreen but developed a horrible topical allergy to one of the ingredients in it that left me with a red swollen itchy scaly face (probably one of the sunscreens because I'm allergic to other sunscreens). I've switched to the Japanese water resistant Suncut Kose and love it. I just returned from a 5 wk Africa trip and used it daily when out photographing in the African sun and it performed great--no sensitivity, no sunburn, no tanning. I used the gel/creme

I’ve been using Biore sunscreens for a decade. I love them! My favorite is the moisturizing cream one in a tube. It’s not as runny. The Anessa UV Mild Milk has the most transparent, lightweight finish of all the sunscreens I’ve tried. But one needs to wait for 3-5 minutes for the initial slippery feel to dry down. It also has little white cast despite having both Titanium and Zinc in it, but it does require a bit more rub-in around facial hairs.
I am so glad they mentioned those products from Japan where I am originally from. I’m pretty sure Canmake has a clear colour gel sunscreen which I personally like over the green one. Most of Japanese sunscreens are easy to apply, spread over and wash off so that I constantly use. I’m keen to watch your next video about another products you have gotten in Japan!!!

Hi Doctors, culturally Asia have different standard of being a beauty. Majority of Asian girls are still into the whole lighter skin type (that's why whitening products are selling#1 on the board, vs. in US can only called "brightening"), therefore Japan made lots of different types of sunscreens. Also, some brands are for male, some for female, and recent new brands like Shiro (fragrance well-known brand) is more unisex. Example, Biore product you picked has a version w/o fragrance. Shiseido Anessa has their well-known waxy coat almost on majority of their sunscreen products, it's very Anessa! Cannmake is a cosmetic company for girl, therefore, their product are going to be more girly and cute. For male Shiseido create a line called "Gatsby" which you can purchase in drug stores. In Japan there are color sunscreen which will be able to correct the skin tone before apply make-up which is call "下地" like a color corrector primer in the US(usually are only on professional make up companies) . I think what Dr.S should do is put them in different category. Shiro is usually a high-end brand from department store, and there are brands only can get in department store to compare with. Drug store can be category for skincare sunscreens(sensitive skin) approve by doctors or make-up brands sunscreen! :)
This is so informative. Thank you so much. I really want to buy Anessa since the sample they gave was awesome but it's like double in price compared to KR sunscreen. So crazy expensive

Please try the face one and update the review, please! I agree - I don't like using the body/face one on my face either and have been using Biore UV Aqua Rich for FACE (very similar packaging but doesn't require shaking. It's in a squeezable tube) for years. My skin is very sensitive, and this is the only sunscreen that works. Also, it's invisible on my face and great price point. As far as I know, the face only version is fragrance free (at least, I don't smell anything.) I hope you'll like it. :) Thanks for the videos!
My favorite SPF is from Japan. I'm a Kose Suncut gel STAN! Super effective for oily girls, especially if you wear makeup. Ridiculously inexpensive - maybe $8? SPF 50+ PA ++++! No scent. I repeat, NO SCENT. I used to get nervous about applying the required amount of sunscreen to my face but this product literally disappears and gets absorbed immediately. The Canmake WAS pretty awesome, too. What the hell happened! Lol Good luck finding your fave, everyone. 😊

If it says "usually ships within 24 hours", it still has to cross the pond (if you're in the US) but it's a MUCH faster process. I've never had a problem and can't praise them enough. Born in Hokkaido, shiro is a cosmetic, fragrance and home care brand whose iconic sleek, white design stays true to its snowy northern roots. Having recently opened overseas shops in London and New York, the brand using natural and locally sourced ingredients mostly from Hokkaido and other parts of Japan, such as kagome kombu, sake kasu or flaxseed oil, has finally reached its well-deserved fanbase abroad. It’s not until you enter shiro’s magnificent Jiyugaoka store’s basement level however, that you will truly understand the mastery of shop, product and packaging design that distinguishes shiro from other Japanese cosmetic brands.
the anessa that is everyone's holy grail is the gold one. the pink one is apparently for sensitive skin, therefore I think it's either physical or hybrid. and they said it's fragrance free, but interesting that still has a scent.
The Shiseido sun stick is easily my favourite stick in terms of application. But I found it left me looking extremely dewy. And for someone who is already quite oily, I didn't appreciate that finish on it. I really like the Skin Aqua UV Moisture Essence Gold for a water resistant Japanese sunscreen!
Moment 13:52 to 14:05, Maxfield's humming while appling canmake, Shah silently chuckling - TOO HILARIOUS. Anyway, just a thought, maybe the Canmake green sunscreen is for Japanese Geisha makeup!
Anessa is a Shiseido brand! It is a sunscreen that has to be shaken before use. I have the one with the blue lid and it is a hybrid sunscreen so I assume this one is, too. It's suppose to leave a satin finish, and I also find it to be drying over time. I also have the Shiseido sun stick, and I do love it for the ease of use, but it does seem a bit thick sometimes in the FL summer humidity.
Please, please come back soon with another video and podcast. I've just discovered your channel and have been binge-watching for a week! 🤩 You guys are so unique! I love your content, positive energy and beautiful friendship! 🥰🥰
That _is_ the mild milk. You can tell by the pink bottle with a gold top. The skincare milk is the one in the gold bottle with a blue top, and it's the one with fragrance.
Could you do a video about your favorite “all in one” products? Like the products that tackle the most actives with the least steps? Potentially an ideal routine with these products?
Love watching two gorgeous men talk about skin care! Now, I do have a question... did Dr. Maxfield have to use all these sunscreens on top of each other, or was there a face wash in between takes? I'm so picky about my sunscreen, I've tried so many and always end up back to my Australian Gold Tinted SPF50. The only other one I do love is the one by Beauty of Joseon, because it makes my face feel so amazing - but it's not waterproof.
Hi docs! Could you make a video about first-aid skin care/wound care? In light of current events, people might turn to TH-cam when it's impossible to get to a healthcare provider. How do you take care of a wound, cut, injured skin barrier? How do you prevent infection of a wound?
Water resistant! SkinAqua UV Super Moisture Gel in the pump and Kose Suncut UV Perfect Gel have saved my arms working outside all summer lol can’t wear them on my face bc of the alcohol I’ve gone thru so many of them 🤣🤣🤣🤍🤍🤍
Thanks for talking about the association of skin disease with mental health. I have vitiligo since childhood, it never affected me physically but it certainly destroyed my mental health.
Anessa is one of the most "heavy duty" sunscreen, the spf acutally become higher, when you sweat a little. I tired the gold tube version, and it's pretty good for my oily skin during the summer. But since they reformulate the sunscreen every few years, I am not sure how the new one is compare to the old formular I used.
@doctorly the Google translate app is your BFF for foreign languages. With Japanese and South Korean skincare, you can use your camera on the text and it translates to English (or whichever language you pick) on top of the original text. It’s amazing.
I"m in the US and heard rave reviews of it so ordered multiple bottles of it (to justify the shipping costs) and the first time I used it my face turned red, itched terribly, swelled up, and the skin then all peeled off after a few days! Obviously I was allergic to one of the sunscreens in it so I ended up having to give all the bottles away to a friend!
Hey, i suffered from acne issue for the longest period (almost 15years) Visited many dermatologist, tried home remedies, changed diet, drank lots of water Nothing work Last year i saw your video, i already had all the products, I cut off few and changed the way i used Now it works wonder Finally my skin is healing Now please please Please make videos for hair care routine for oily scalp and fizzy(not so dry) hair Or in general all hair types I have seen your other video on hair care, But can you make another one, in more details What products and ingredients can be used with their review
I’ve been using the Biore sunscreen for the last 2years and love it! I pour directly on my face and works great. For the spray, I use it only for my body because it’s too sticky. You can use google translate with camera for the direction😊
The first one Biore UV Aqua Rich protection lotion is for you to pour it directly on your face ! With caution of course but not that hard ! And also it instructs you to shake it before use !! So it’s normal that you see the water and the white liquid separated if you don’t shake it but it’s not intended to ; personally I love it very much, just you guys don’t know how to use it yet
I used to live in Japan and travel there every year, so have been using Japanese skincare for like 15 years. A lot of products have fragrance but a lot of fragrance free as well, like Sana Nameraka and Kose which are my two favourites since my teens, and of course Hada Labo. I also like the brands Melano CC, Chifure, Lululun for sheet masks, and , I love Anessa and Allie for sunscreen, although most Japanese ones have a lot of alcohol which is drying for me. The ones without alcohol that I liked were the Anessa Mild milk which I always buy tons of in the duty free whenever I go there, and the Kiss me mommy sunscreen. I also bought a lot of the biore UV mists. I wasn't a fan of Japanese shampoos though, they were all so stripping, and bond repair isn't a thing there yet so I prefer western hair products as they are more conditioning and better for bleach repair imo.
@@lli_loue Yeah it's a funny name, but it's a kids sunscreen so that's probably the reason for the name. It's completely alcohol and fragrance free, and also no essential oils so it's pretty good for sensitive skin
I've always wanted to try Korean and Japanese sunscreens but you can't buy them here in Australia as they don't pass our TGA guidelines. It's the same with some skincare products unfortunately. I must take a holiday then, haha.
I'm actually pleasantly surprised to hear that you guys like the sunscreen sticks. I've considered picking one up for vacation, especially because I think it could convince my boyfriend to actually wear sunscreen (he has that in common with kids I guess) but I wondered whether it would actually apply enough to be effective.
I have the Canmake sunscreen and compared mine with the one you bought. My tube is silver with a yellow shell design at the top and bottom and definitely does not have a greenish cast. I have rosacea so I'll pick one up on my next Japan trip. Thanks for this review.
Can you guys do a video on Molluscum Contagiosum? How to treat that and please discuss the measures to prevent it from coming? It would be of great help.
Hi Drs! I am hoping you see and reply to my message. I have been viewing your videos for 2 weeks ( love the information you provide). I started my journey with skin care recently and have found that my skin is extremely sensitive. I started using glycolic acid and niacinamide. After just two times using it I started getting red patches and feeling my skin very dry. I do not have issues with acne ( only have blackheads on my nose) from past acne breakouts but right now do not have problems with acne. I am doing this to care for my skin ( anti-aging/ hydrate) my skin more. Anything you can recommend I do? I am pretty sad to find my skin is so sensitive to these products. I hope to hear from you. Thank you!
Hey Laura. I wouldn't recommend glycolic acid, especially for a newbie. You went right out the gate with the harshest & strongest exfoliant! That is probably why it irritated your skin. Mandelic & PHA acids are much gentler if you want an exfoliant. Also don't start off using acids every day if you've never used any before.
I'm a fan of annesa gel sunscreen, but now im trying out verdio gel❤ its cheaper with huge bottle (no alcohol and no fragrance).. The one thats popular for canmake is the clear one, i dont like the green one too, its for tone up.. but the clear one is great ❤ For the annesa is the one with gold bottle which is more for oily skin (has mattifying finish) and the tube gold one is more for dry skin..
I would LOVE to see the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen. I’ve been using it for about a year. It feels luxurious. Soaks in wonderfully. I actually stopped wearing foundation and just using a translucent powder because it just helps my skin look better somehow (zero science to back that up 😬). I’m also acne prone and it has been a life saver I’m not causing breakouts for me.
In Japan now! Did you happen to try the vitamin C cream!????? Been using it while here and liking it but would love your opinion! Unique packaging too!
Drs, this not related to sunscreen but any recommendations on what to do for dry psoriatic scalp & around the ears? Sometimes my skin gets so dry it is irritated under the flakes. BTW, for anyone buying the mermaid gel make sure you buy the CLEAR one. This mermaid gel was the first Asian sunscreen I tried & I love it! Doesn't skin or leave a white cast. Dries quick. I wish the tube was bigger & that there was an expiry date on the product.
The one problem I consistently have with waterproof sunscreens is that they just don't wash off at the end of the day. Is there a particular type of product I should be using?
One of my first skincare products was Biore when I was a child. Biore products are accessible, reasonable, and generally known in Japan. In my opinion, Biore is more likely for skincare beginners like teens;) ;). The green things are particularly for the very fair-skin type who also have redness of the face. It was funny when Dr Maxfield tried it!
Question: if u apply azelaic acid on in the morning, and then shower in the afternoon after a workout, should you reapply azelaic acid after that shower, before later using a retinoid or Benzoyl Peroxide in the evening?
Could you please review the laroche Posey UV Mune 400 sunscreen. It has alcohol and yet everyone raves about it (it's really very very liquidy as well)
Haaaaaaa just in time… I work for a company that pushes products because there are always financial goals. So push this product because you have to. I’ve learned so much working in this field. I always try to pick and choose my favorite products that I can actually stand behind as far as “targeted sales” go. Makes me feel less of a liar and a terrible person.

Hello there! I would love you to do a full video on vitiligo. I've had it for years and am now completely white, like an albino but not. But wait, there's more! Vitiligo can affect your vision, it can affect your hearing and, vitiligo can be caused by chemicals, not only skin lighting products but by pesticides, etc.. The complete story has never been addressed by a dermatologist. 1% of the population has this immune disorder (?). Even people who don't have vitiligo have started to be curious about this diagnosis. the anessa that is everyone's holy grail is the gold one. the pink one is apparently for sensitive skin, therefore I think it's either physical or hybrid. and they said it's fragrance free, but interesting that still has a scent.
The gold one has been the top seller for 10 years
Have been use the gold one more than 15 years & now still my favourite
OCD or not, I hate touching my face without washing my hands first, too. Now I have a medical professional--the good Dr. Shah--backing me up! :)
It’s got mineral oil in.
RIP your DMs, Maxfield. 😂
For Anessa, you should find the Mild gel and Mild Milk variants as they marketed it to be fragrance free and for sensitive skin.
That _is_ the mild milk. You can tell by the pink bottle with a gold top. The skincare milk is the one in the gold bottle with a blue top, and it's the one with fragrance.
I just got back from Japan as well and picked up the Biore UV AQUA Rich Watery Essence. Watery feel but not as watery as the one you bought.
You purchased the wrong Anessa. The billboards have the perfect milk which is fragranced and suitable for oily skin.
Hi docs! Could you make a video about first-aid skin care/wound care? In light of current events, people might turn to TH-cam when it's impossible to get to a healthcare provider. How do you take care of a wound, cut, injured skin barrier? How do you prevent infection of a wound?
Dr Shah’s face when he was rubbing that green sunscreen in 😂😂😂
This was hilarious!! You guys seemed to have a lot of fun with this!!!
I trust Japanese skincare so much, so affordable and their R&D is way more advanced than in North America
I’ve been using the biore watery essence sunscreen for over a year or so and as someone who is brown. It just melts in the skin
You could use the La Roche Posay UVmune 400 oil control fluid from Europe. Amazing UVA protection and extreme water resistance without any white cast.
@@picklebird1261 so?
Hey, i suffered from acne issue for the longest period (almost 15years)
Visited many dermatologist, tried home remedies, changed diet, drank lots of water
Nothing work
Last year i saw your video, i already had all the products,
I cut off few and changed the way i used
Now it works wonder
Finally my skin is healing
Now please please Please make videos for hair care routine for oily scalp and fizzy(not so dry) hair
Or in general all hair types
I have seen your other video on hair care,
But can you make another one, in more details
What products and ingredients can be used with their review
I've been using Shiseido sunscreen for YEARS and it has always been good to me! Nice to see it getting some love.
Can u do a skin care routine for mature sun damaged skin ? I'm 46 and need to know what's good for my skin .
I’ve been using the Biore sunscreen for the last 2years and love it! I pour directly on my face and works great. For the spray, I use it only for my body because it’s too sticky. You can use google translate with camera for the direction😊
The spray one is not supposed to spray on your face directly. The usage precautions say you must spray on your hands first and put it on your face.
Dr Shah waiting for Dr Maxfield to take out his mirror for the green sunscreen was great LOL
My Biore UV has never seperated or gotten clumpy at all 🤔
Same here! Maybe it got too hot on the plane back?
I laughed out loud when Dr Maxfield said: i like it, and dr Shah said: I LOVEEE ITT. I was actually laughing out loud. Lol
How should I apply the benzoyl peroxide wash. I have acne on my cheeks and they are so red but they don’t hurt. I need help 😢😞😫
Use Google translate to find the ingredients just point your phone over the label
I didn't even care about the products, just had fun watching you two. Thanks for making me smile.
The gold Anessa is the OG of that line.
I wasn't a fan of Japanese shampoos though, they were all so stripping, and bond repair isn't a thing there yet so I prefer western hair products as they are more conditioning and better for bleach repair imo.
kiss me mommy is hilarious 😂
@@lli_loue Yeah it's a funny name, but it's a kids sunscreen so that's probably the reason for the name. It's completely alcohol and fragrance free, and also no essential oils so it's pretty good for sensitive skin
Which stores in Japan can I buy skin care products from? Can someone help?
I've always wanted to try Korean and Japanese sunscreens but you can't buy them here in Australia as they don't pass our TGA guidelines. It's the same with some skincare products unfortunately. I must take a holiday then, haha.
Canmake mermaid skin gel UV is a primer rather than a sunscreen. So it isn’t supposed to be used on its own but followed by a foundation or so.
Im also very disappointed that I got the green Canmake sunscreen instead of the clear when I was in Japan. It's not easy being green!
I agree, I don't want to touch my face unless can wash my hands , especially with sunscreen
Just saw this in my YT, can’t wait to watch my two favorite Doc’s👍👍
This green one is so hilarious! It's like no one tried it before going to market or something! 😂😂😂
Do you two ever give thoughts on prescription eczema treatments? A comparison video would be really cool:)
The cast from these sunscreens is hilarious! 😂
Hi Drs! Thanks for the advice! 😊 I am going to Japan in the future. 😊
Hi Dr Shah, and Dr Maxfield.
Could you guys make a video on scalp psoriasis? Or just psoriasis in general?
Thank you
Want a skincare routine for bumpy comedogenic skin
I'm a fan of annesa gel sunscreen, but now im trying out verdio gel❤ its cheaper with huge bottle (no alcohol and no fragrance)..
The one thats popular for canmake is the clear one, i dont like the green one too, its for tone up.. but the clear one is great ❤
For the annesa is the one with gold bottle which is more for oily skin (has mattifying finish) and the tube gold one is more for dry skin..
More Asian brands review please.
Maybe Be Minimalist next?
I would LOVE to see the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen. I’ve been using it for about a year. It feels luxurious. Soaks in wonderfully. I actually stopped wearing foundation and just using a translucent powder because it just helps my skin look better somehow (zero science to back that up 😬). I’m also acne prone and it has been a life saver I’m not causing breakouts for me.
Dr maxfield green beard looked absolutely stunning 😂
+1 it’s so green😂
I LOVE hair scrubs so much! They really aren't super easy to find either.
It has alcohol and yet everyone raves about it (it's really very very liquidy as well)
I tried bioré products when I was living and Japan years ago and some of them are very good actually. And shiseido products are amazing
Which of the shishiedo products did you use and which skincare concerns did it help with (aging,hyperpigmentation...?)
Biore essence sunscreen is my true love. I’ve tried others, I’ve cheated, but I keep going back.
I fell over laughing from the green cast but I’m also so sad. The OG canmake mermaid (not the tone up) was the GOAT.
I’m still laughing over the green face!
matcha scrub shampoo (translate I looked up)
: Frosted salt particles of different sizes and rich foam
Enjoy scalp care time with the calming aroma of matcha
A scalp scrub shampoo with a wide-mouth bottle design that mixes scrub salt particles of different sizes to remove dirt and dead skin cells from the scalp.
Rich in bouncy and dense bubbles, it can remove excess sebum and dirt and nourish a healthy scalp.
The warm and calming matcha fragrance lingers lightly on the hair, and the comfortable fragrance continues after bathing.
When the scalp feels sticky and uncomfortable, it is recommended to use it 1 to 2 times a week as a special care.
Use an amount about the size of a grape each time, which can be used about 8 times.
POINT
As a special care when your scalp feels sticky and uncomfortable, it is recommended to use it 1 to 2 times a week.
Reward yourself with the fresh and calm matcha aroma and fine, dense bubbles, and enjoy a relaxing and peaceful bathing time.
【Fragrance】
Fresh leaves and citrus exude an elegant floral fragrance, with a refreshing and warm calming aroma.
Capacity: 150g
Hi drs. Hopefully you can also feature hygiene/skincare products for infants and the elderly
I enjoy the Biore aqua rich watery essence. I love the formula and the smell is very light and disapates very quickly.
My favorite though is the Skin Aqua Super Moisture Gel Gold. I keep buying that one and nothing tops it for me so far!
Can you guys do skin care (entire body if possible) for winter please… i noticed that no matter how much lotion I put on it’s just dry. I have tried oils but not cutting it
I wish you would have talked about the sunblocking ingredients which is what is important and not the superficial properties of texture and smell.
There’s a lot of shiro stores in the US…. You can sheen them out, their body scrub is also something
Dr, if u love scalp scrub my favorite is Lavojoy Hair We Bloom it has both physical and chemical exfoliant.
Anessa all the way. Been using for 8-9 years, living in tropical country. Half the time mo other skin care, just the anessa. Skin never breaks out and clear.
Thank you Both Dr. We appreciate you both mire than you know.... Appreciate some great info , science and a laugh!!! ❤
What hair products do you use? My favs are Living Proof Thickening Mouse, Aveda Volumizing Tonic & O’douds Matte Paste
You guys are so much fun and I love the interplay between you. Thanks for always delivering useful and hilarious content. This is off topic, but I think it would be a hoot if you'd take a Myers-Briggs personality test together for our viewing pleasure. I believe I've determined Dr. Shah's type, but the jury is still out for me on Dr. Maxfield. I'm guessing if anyone could find a way to make a personality test relevant to dermatology it would be you two lovely doctors! Anyhow...really enjoying this channel and the Unhinged podcast.
Can you please do Korean skin care next!? Specially numbizin. I just started using this brand and I really would like to know more from a dermatologist point of view !
Please break the internet and do a deep dive on this melanin destryer. Thank you both ❤
I can't with the fragrance
