Short and simple explanation: Shinji caves in and starts Instrumentality, causing everyone to turn into orange Fanta and morph into one being, with everyone’s consciousness being mixed together so everyone knows everything of each other. Last 2 episodes of the main show are what happens in Shinji’s mind as this is happening. He realizes he wants to live, stops Instrumentality, and everyone can decide for themselves whether or not they want to come back. Shinji and Asuka are the first to do so, Shinji makes sure it’s real by choking Asuka out, Asuka comforts him bc she understands his pain after being morphed with everyone, and she also knows about the hospital scene too-hence the “disgusting” line.
Anno actually wasn't getting the "disgusting" line he wanted, it wasn't poignant enough, so Anno asked Asuka's VA, if a man broke into her house, and came into her bedroom while she was sleeping, he could have raped or murdered her, but instead he masturbates over her while she's asleep, how would she react if she woke up? "Disgusting" she said
I mean the anime is 100% metaphor, so if Mickey's reality is about being a stepbrother, let him be. It's till about becoming a operating person and various trauma along the way, Mickey is off mark just for his "what we saw is not reality" thing
Yes but there is also a good amount of info in the movie being presented as this is what is happening that was not being taken as this is what is happening and its funny
@@GreatNinjaJordan It's obvious they watched this with a very different mindset. I guess too much Evangelion broke them, we enjoyed all of it over 15 years
It’s weird cause most anime shonen also have tons of metaphor and should get some more analysis but only Eva gets that attention to detail while everyone trashes on other shows. Not saying Eva is less or more “deep” just that from dbz to jjk and the like I’ve seen and discussed plot beats that are deeper than good beats bad yet people always make you seem like your wrong for thinking about shonen past fights no substance. It reminds me of the attack on titan effect. People hated it when it was so popular first season as the elites thought it was all hype no substance and quit. Then when it got deeper in a more obvious way they didn’t understand the clues in earlier seasons and said it’s better not trying to be pseudo deep and political. Then dropped it or hated on the ending and coped that there was a anime original ending and when there wasn’t and anime onlies liked it opposed to hating it like they thought they couldn’t fall back and agree all the time drip feeds of the story and not funny getting it made them hate it. Nope they doubled down and said the few strips of lines that were basically equal to translation changes ie official takes on what they said made the ending somehow different and told anime onlies trust me the manga is different this anime ending fixed it. The amount of saving face. I get it but I wish we all just came clean and listened to people if we didn’t get the ending or story instead of hating on it ( all stories aot was an example.) and tried to pay attention like they do watching Eva and even if our fan theories don’t pan out don’t just immediately say bad writing. (I’m not including people who “get” stories and still hate them or just have the opinion or take that they just hate a thing) more like just people who hate but don’t really come from good faith tries to engage with the story. Normies made good faith push to engage with Eva when we all thought they would hate it. Or atleast I did lol
just a note: Shinji didn't got into the eva in time not becouse he didn't wanted to, but the entry point was COVERED in bakelite and it was impossible for him to get in...
"Why the fuck did you want to watch that?" "I liked it." "What the fuck WAS it?" "I loved it!" "WHAT was it." "Its GREAT is what it is!" Me in any conversation about Evangelion.
No it wasn't. She thanked him when he saved her from the volcano. She complemented his violin playing and was at the hospital when he got injured, and that moment if you want to include it. The instrumentality lays all people's emotions bare, that's why Asuka, the one who wants to be seen as independent hates being combined with everyone and is shown physically enraged. She hates it, which is why(after Shinji) she's the first to come back from instrumentality. Nge Asuka gets enough of a bad rep without people purposely saying things like this like she has never been nice. Not to mention Rebuilds take her grouchy-ness to 100 for no reason. She's way worse in those.
@@neonthehedgehog12 I disagree with that last statement. She's angrier and more annoying, yes, but she also shows just as much affection if not more by the end of 4. Just in her own strange assholey way.
@@littleredruri yes, your right, she does more nicer things in the movies. Yeah she cooks for him in the 2nd but he never eats it or finds out or talk about it. Yes she looks after him in 4, but it's followed by frustration that she takes out on him from the entire 3rd movie on and most people wouldn't call that nice even if I agree it was for his on good in the 4th movie. NGE Asuka did surprisingly little of those toxic things and was nicer a little as she did and yet cause of the rebuilds that is how people talk about her overall cause that's all everyone sees. The point I'm getting at is that she's not bad in NGE and all that physical abuse comes from the rebuild version of her character which honestly in my opinion is worse written because all her affection is offset by her aggression far more, but your right she does "care" more.
Evangelion has many different themes, some more significant than others while some are there merely to keep the user engaged. The key theme of evangelion is realising your self-worth and opening yourself to others despite the pain it may bring. Take care and love yourself.
The problem is not him cooking. The problem is him taking it and running with it as if it is actually the truth. it wasnt a theory for him he had "figured it out" lmao
LMAO, if there was an Olympic competition for having the wrong take or misunderstanding a piece of media, Micky would have won the Gold Medal. Loved your series of Evangelion reactions guys, i really hope you give the Rebuilds movie a chance. Edit: i just saw that you already have the Rebuilds up on your Patreon haha, yeeey!!
I will be waiting for the Rebuild reactions! It will be full circle. You will understand everthing (kinda). And by the way, the song is Komm suesser Tod, and was written by Hideaki Anno himself. Read the lyrics, it has a lot to do with the plot of Evangelion.
Hardly. The finale of the show coexisting with this movie only makes sense if you take it that way whereas you could probably handpick any other media that works without this explanation.
And that's why it's always the most boring "theory" for any show. Super prevalent in theories about kids shows. "It's all a dream." "They were in purgatory." etc. While I'm sure there's a way to pull it off in a satisfactory way, 99% of the time it's just a cheap copout because the writer couldn't come up with a better ending.
@@Ceroreactsbut she's his childhood friend in that not his adopted sister. She even says it and states she goes to his house every morning to wake him up from school. Yui even states she's such a good friend to shinji
Bakelite isn't the same as LCL (the fluid inside the entry plug). While Bakelite is the name of a type of resin used in stuff like kitchenware and electrical plugs, the "bakelite" in the series is nothing like the real substance. I'd forgotten just how much of a bop Komm Susser Tod is. And now we can probably tackle stuff that's technically only sorta canon, because it comes from stuff like a databook and the PS2 video game. Lilith and Adam are both "Seeds of Life" which were created by a precursor race to seed life throughout the galaxy. Each seed had its own transport vessel (moon), 'dead sea scrolls' (essentially an instruction manual) and Spear of Longinus. The spear acted as a safeguard, to disable the Seed if necessary. Each Seed could choose one of two paths for the life that would come from them. The Fruit of Life would create something with incredible power that can choose and manipulate its own physical form. The Fruit of Knowledge would create something mortal, with a fixed form, that relies on cooperation for strength. Adam was contained within the White Moon, which landed in the antarctic. Lilith was contained in the Black Moon, the very top of which became the Geofront. The two Seeds weren't supposed to land on the same planet, and Adam's spear disabled him, allowing life descended from Lilith to spread across the earth. Adam stayed dormant until the Katsuragi Expedition disturbed him by removing the Spear, causing 2nd Impact.
@@neonthehedgehog12 I genuinely cannot see how anyone comes close, every major message the series tries to explore is pushed through him, eva is pretty much just a massive character study of shinji, his dynamics, thematic expression, characterisation, everything is just very clear of anyone else. This can be applied to pretty much any MC as most series the MC is the character who is the most fleshed out and explored. There are very few series where the Mc is not the best character. Obviously it’s entirely subjective but in a general sense of the word “best” the MC is typically the best
Shinji, Asuka and Rei are sort of 3 edges from the same triangle, in a way they represent different feelings/traumas that comes from the same person. Personally i really like Shinji and Rei
I think if you want an explanation of what actually happened in the movie, it's pretty simple. However, what it MEANS and what Shinji is actually thinking is highly debatable. In terms of events, instrumentality occurs with the third impact, and all of humanity is fused into one when lilith/rei gathers their souls into the egg. Shinji, Eva-01, and Rei, however being the people used to start instrumentality, including the fact that Rei is shinji's mom and Eva is shinji's mom also, allowed shinji to decide the course of events. He tells the newly made god that is his mother/rei that he wishes against instrumentality, and he, along with asuka, are the first humans to re-emerge from the sea of LCL. The world is in a nightmare state, the ocean is the color of blood, a giant corpse covers the land, and the moon is stained with the blood of god. There's no undoing what's been done. But as said in the movie, anywhere can be paradise if you have the will to live. The entire rest of humanity is still liquidized, but they can return to human form by undertaking self actualization in the same way Shinji and presumably Asuka have. Now, what is Anno trying to say with all this? What is Shinji's mental state? What does Shinji and Asuka's interaction at the end mean? Is the tv finale canon to this movie, with it's events taking place inside the egg of instrumentality? Your guess is as good as mine. I don't think anyone, even Anno, can say for sure what it means.
Spot on explanation. I’d say at the end Shinji still tried to choke out Asuka to see if everything is in fact actual reality instead of the loopy madness that happened in his mind. Asuka’s little hand rub against his cheek is a sign of affection towards him-and since everyone on the entire planet was one being for a short moment, they all know each others thoughts and struggles/pains-as to say and comfort Shinji that she understands his feelings/pain now, and Shinji breaks down because someone finally understands. Asuka’s last line too I always thought was her way of saying she found out about the hospital scene and calls him out for it lol
- Shinji is battling with his depression trying to decide if he should live or give up - The human instrumentality is a project created and supported by people who are afraid of getting hurt and hurting other people (Ikari mentions he shouldn't get close to shinji because he doesn't want to hurt him, also he wants the instrumentality to happen so he can get rid of the pain from the death of his wife and be with her again) - The events from ep 25/26 are what goes through Shinji's (and everyone's) mind while the instrumentality is happening -Shinji chokes Asuka when they come back because during the instrumentality he did it but there's no reaction from Asuka meaning it wasn't real, since she reacts this time it means she's alive and it's real, that's why he's crying.
A different answer to a different problem In the anime ending, Shinji seeks the will to live and how to love himself because he can't live with who he is and fears that, while he wishes people were kinder to him, he also feels that he deserves that, he's a coward. In this movie, Shinji seeks a why to live, but not because he can't love himself (a bit of that too) but because he just fucking HATES THIS WORLD, because the world hurts him, why live in a world where people only hurt you? who don't understand you? In the anime Shinji finds an answer which is rather wholesome, in this movie he also finds one? like He does find an answer, but it's a bit more cynical
he actually comes to the same realization here that he does in the series..it's just presented in a bleaker way, but he ultimately rejected instrumentality by coming to the same conclusions. in the end, he chose to accept the pain that comes with life because he still gets to live a life (accepting himself in the process) as well as everyone else if they so choose to come back, which asuka was the first to do so (which also represents her growth as a person after all that she's been through). to me, its a lot less cynical and a lot more of a hopeful ending after the chaos the series and movie presented up to that point.
Its actually simple, to live or to not live (considering that living means being hurt constantly by others, but not living means absolutely emptiness)? Shinjii chooses to live in the original anime and in the movie, in the anime we see a very realistically representation of what goes through a mind of someone with depression coming to that conclusion (to live), in the movie its the same thing, just presented differently to give a bit of a more dramatic take (like the world is ending and there's a giant naked teenager in the sky, pretty dramatic right?) But it's the same thing, it basically means someone depressed choosing to live even if it means getting hurt.
Basically he just realizes that this is not what he wanted. When Rei rejected Gendo, she basically gave the option to Shinji but then Shinji realized that for him, he needed the physical world from before in order to understand himself.
So now people can come back if they want to. And i have seen some people blame Shinji for destroying the world, but Gendo would have done it anyways. Which its actually possible that the original NGE Ending is one where Gendo becomes God since at the end of that we see him with Yui.
Ok, I've seen this movie a thousand times in my youth, but right now, at this very moment, after 20 years, I feel like I understand the ending perfectly.
Since we are now diving into the meaning of this show, I HEAVILY suggest watching the video from "Wisecrack" called "The Loneliest Anime - The Philosophy of Neon Genesis Evangelion - Wisecrack Edition." It's by people who actually have a profession in philosophy and it's one of the most excellent video essay breakdowns of this show as a whole. You guys already independently garnered bits and pieces of the meaning, and this video essay is the grade-A-glue for all of it.
It's clear that they need to do a metric ton of research. But I don't trust them to be able to do it on their own time. So your suggestions is probably the best in these comments.
I don't understand how anyone could watch evangelion and not watch rebuild. It's so crazy that idiots on the internet turn people off to watching them out of a misplaced agenda
The End of Evangelion is a masterpiece. Anime of the 90s strike a different note with the pieces of hope they put into pessimistic realism. This work was a masterpiece when it was released in 1997, 25 years have passed and it is still a masterpiece. And no one seems to shake it's throne...
With the passage of time I'm learning that animes are basically a representation of the era they were made into, the reason why there were so many great animes from the 90s (especially psychological ones) its because of many things that were happening at the time, like some philosophers were going crazy with their thesis and studying things like the borderline personalities or the fact that we were just entering the post modern era with the internet rising and global warming and so and so
@@denial1004 I totally agree, you can even see the impact of not only global events but also the socio-cultural situation of Japan at the 90's. You can see the decline of the Japanese economy after its peak in 1995 and the starting effects of urbanization on the works. In almost all the works of that period (gits, bebop, lain, perfect blue, eva...) you can see the pressure of the city on people in an incredible way. While this may sometimes be based on not being able to make sense of reality with city scenes where you can only hear the sound of music, as in Gits, or sometimes you can turn the city noise into a horror narrative, as in Perfect Blue.
42:07 I really "Like" this scene in a narrative and technical level, in the end of the anime Shinji says that "It's ok for me to be here in this world!" WHERE IN THIS, When he ASKS if it's ok for he to be here and he has no response
They've been building up to the Third Impact event and it was as weird, horrifying, extravagant and epic as expected. I felt like the Rebuild films overdid the Impact events though that it became less special. But other than that, I thought Rebuild had a satisfying conclusion though. Regardless whether you believe in the time loop theory, I think the Rebuilds is an essential part of the whole experience.
33:08 its not a second spear, its the original spear, the one used by the Eva Series (the vulture wings) its a clone of the original spear... the original was put on the moon in episode 22 by Rei Ayanami when she defeated Arael by throwing him the spear into his position in space...
The rapid displays of hatred, compassion, and disgust between Asuka and Shinji right at the end were just an example of the turbulence and uncertainty that comes with humans existing separately from each other. The human condition itself that Shinji has been running from but now accepts.
3:26 The woman in the foreground here is Megumi Hayashibara, who plays Rei Ayanami. 3:28 She is Yuko Miyamura, who plays Asuka Langley Soryu.😊 3:33 At the time, Sega released a game called "Neon Genesis Evangelion: Girlfriend of Steel," which was based on an original scenario written for EVA. 4:01 This is the emblem of "STAR CHILD", a label within King Records that sold EVA's early OSTs.They have also released albums for Sunrise productions such as Gundam, as well as many voice actors. 4:05 For the director, who grew up watching many Toho films such as Godzilla, it was his greatest wish to have an opening title that shows the traditional crashing waves of the Sea of Japan.🤭 4:19 At the time, I was shocked and delighted to see the Eirin (Japan Film Ethics Review Organization) permission mark, which should be sacred to filmmakers, turned into 3DCG like this😆 27:51 Yes, this is definitely break time.🤭 When Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" was released in theaters, the movie was three and a half hours long, so the word "break" was displayed on the screen during the movie to encourage people to go to the toilet. This was done to imitate the movie, and it was necessary to split the movie into episodes 25 and 26, which are written in Roman numerals, to contrast with episodes 25 and 26, which are written in Chinese numerals in the TV version.😌 45:46 And now we have the voice actors for the three goddesses Misato, Rei, and Asuka.
I like OG Eva, but I hadn't 'rewatched' it in years because of how heavy and convoluted it is. I love new Eva. The Rebuild films are genuinely pleasant to watch while not abandoning the mysticism and violence. You will find them far, far easier to get through and understand. Mickey's theorizing brought me back to the early internet, where debates over OG Eva's meaning/themes/ending were a fast track to genuinely vicious arguments over lorecraft lolol.
12:32 bakelite is colored plastic, developed in 1907. If you've ever seen a red, rotary phone from the last century You've seen something made out of the stuff. They're filling the halls with molten plastic.
I feel like people over play the idea that everyone hated the ending and threatened him. Like most who weren’t on board can tell early that the series wasn’t for you if you wanted something simple. The people who massively hate it today pushed through to watch it to get the hype and hate it either cause they get confused or understand it and think it’s simple surprisingly since a lot of explainations are out there and the story is clear if you pay attention and new shows tackled the ideas as they were inspired by this. It’s akin to people who hate the AOT ending for being cliche cause they watched C…. G…s. Today just a bit of similarity hurts as everyone is looking for that elusive “unique” idea to say they watch something not generic.
@@nichescenesthis is entirely my opinion, but I think if you do understand Eva you can even dislike it but not deny its greatness, especially considering that Eva basically inspired like 70% of the animes that came after.
@@denial1004 yeah true. Opinions and all. I listened to a podcast called panning the stream and they loved it at first and thought it was mature storytelling and called out dbz for being simple and they loved that parts let story breathe and it did show don’t tell. Etc. then by the end the wife hated it and said it was all pointless. She compared it to my hero academia and how they did similar topics right. I got what she meant and many fans agreed with her so tons feel against the series. I agree with her in one way yeah my hero can handle topics it talked about in Eva because they can simplify them for a mass audience but that doesn’t make it necessarily best. So my point is yeah people can hate it but like you sorta said ya gotta hopefully respect it. The wife also liked it more when she ended up watching the films. The husband like it all for the most part
I watched this show as a teen and understood it well enough. I didn’t know of the movie until a few years ago and watching it made me appreciate it all over again.
They planned to make this ending but they lacked time (to produce and to squeeze it in 45 minutes) so Anno decided to change the 2 remaming episodes and focus on the deep theme of the show rather than the lore aspect. Then, later, they decided to make the movie, not as a way to please the fans (this is some wet fan theory there, let'sbe real) but because the show was super popular despite the ending. There was money to be made and I suppose Anno wanted to give it a second "better" shot as well.
Evangelion is basically just a merciless takedown of stories that purport what teenage heroes are supposed to look like and be. Shinji's journey is just him learning self-acceptance, which is why I think that although EoE is better than the last two episodes just looking at what these are in a vacuum, 25 and 26 work infinitely better as a finale. I watched those first and then the movie but honestly I kind of wish I'd done the opposite and it's what I recommend to everyone. I'm in agreement with those who say the movie and the episodes are overlapping each other but EoE is happening externally while 25/26 happen internally, within Shinji's mind. I think ending on that more introspective as opposed to bombastic place is the better move.
@@Renoistic I felt like that at first because again I thought it was the better ending but isolating the two EoE definitely has a suitably "epic" quality. I can see why a lot of people prefer it but I think anybody who thinks the last two eps are bad had just been in it for giant robots and Misato's....assets.
25 and 26 aren’t bad but I do think EoE eclipses them in just about every way. I never quite bought Shinji’s 180-degree turn to self-actualization in 30 seconds at the end of Ep 26. I think the final scene on the beach in EoE is perfect. Shinji has made the difficult choice to end Instrumentality and return to his individual form but it’s not all “Congratulations!” He’s inviting infinite pain and suffering into his life, and the life of anyone who chooses to return. And that return is utterly overwhelming as he chokes a newly-formed Asuka until she, in a rare act of compassion, gives him a tender caress on his face. It’s so bittersweet. There’s a hint of hope that things may get better but it’s a foregone conclusion that with human interaction comes misunderstanding and pain. I think it’s so much more fitting thematically and true to the characters.
@@bespectacledheroine7292I listened to panning the stream. A dude from giant bomb is on it with his wife and she hated the show after the ending eps. She clairifies what a lot on Reddit said(those who hate it or this series) and it’s not people who come for action she doesn’t care about action and likes adult theme show etc. I think people just want the show to function on basic abc plot structure mystery and answers. Etc. to be fair I think those same type of people also watch tons of shows and claim most are generic so when they see this I’d assume they want something profound and deep or different but they don’t they and a lot of people. They want something familiar and digestible. This on paper isn’t digestible for basic audiences. That said those watching are mostly not basic audiences. And come for the stuff here but the last two eps for someone like that are redundant as they already picked up on the subtle clues and those that didn’t already quit watching as they thought it was generic monster of the week and no depth. It’s akin to people told to watch invincible tv show and coming back saying I quit after 5 min it’s generic superhero justice league rip off. Those who realize what it’s going watch on and aren’t shocked that it’s different. Those who left would have been shocked but can’t stay long enough to notice so you lose no matter what trying to interest people. (Until hype sets in and spoils it so people watch)
Yeah me too, first time I watched Eva i preferred the EoE ending because of the visuals and everything, now that I'm an adult and have gone through depression the original ending feels way better, even if you just isolate the last two eps from the rest of the anime they still have a great message for someone who's battling with self-doubt/self-hatred/shame etc...
Now, before the new Evangelion movies, you guys might wanna check out a video explaining the lore of Evangelion to grasp a better sense of all the plot points. The Evas, Angels, Dead Sea Scrolls, the Human Intrumentality Project, etc. since I see this as the best pausing point for the series before continuing into the new movies. This movie and the way everything was portrayed supposed to gritty and grotesque. As much as NGE is about cool robot fights, its even more about the representation of human who are psychologically broken and a very visual representation of mental health decline. Anno in the new movies picked up evangelion with the same lore but reworked the ending completely to give it a more finalized and polished tone. Its his complete vision of Neon Genesis Evangelion and left most of the fanbase rather pleased.
Basically in the end Asuka says that because of the hedgehog dilemma between she and Shinji. They could never get close. The only time Shinji acts on Asuka is at the hospital scene and its disgusting. He never gets the courage to reciprocate her feelings nor her his. All the characters in this show are just trying to show love but failing miserably because of all the baggage they have.
Crazy to think that Misato's dad was probably a 'fuckboy' since she said Kaji reminded her of him and she turned out to gain people attention through sexuality keeping that part of her dad in her even if she despised it, the same thing for Asuka, her mom was desperate for attention and when her father cheats on her she goes crazy, Asuka subconsciously acts just like her mother wanting to feel deserved of love all the time even if it is by hurting others because she's afraid to be abandoned again.
Yeah it all happend, it's not some "it was all a dream" story, but it's all metaphors for real life stuff ofc, but marrying yourself to an evangelion theory after just one viewing is not a good idea. Thats how most esoteric stories go though, and this one does indeed continue in Rebuild. Sock Sensei made a couple really good video essays about making sense of Evangelion, you should check them out.
Shinji: kills everyone. rejects instrumentality and comes back because he realizes that it wasn't what he wants. Asuka: rejects instrumentality and comes back to tell Shinji he's disgusting. Fucking savage.
Ah the beauty of Evangelion reactions. Moans of suffering and the most absurd lines out of context that humans can utter. It was pleasure to relive this journey woth the four of you. Ask 100 people what is the best show ever made and you may get 100 different answers, but there is something special about Eva. The raw emotion of it all, that has never had an equal and maybe never will. Not the best, it is the most special.
There was an attempt of making a live action movie back in 2003. The concept art of the Evas/locations didn't look bad but the art of the pilots had different names Asuka was named Kate Rose, Rei was Ray.
I highly respected and appreciated how deeply invested Mickey was in his theory and personal interpretation of his overall big picture -despite being 100% incorrect- 😂 I love you Mickey, keep being amazing on camera my brother. Thanks Normies for this much needed final reaction to this absolute masterpiece. I promise once it finally clicks and you have that "ohhhhh I get it!" moment. You will look back at this moment and probably chuckle to yourselves.
I have seen this series + EoE 3 times and still learn new things every time rofl. A lot of my understanding comes from reading lore on wikis, which is kinda unfortunate as I'm not smart enough to piece this stuff together
Finally!!!!!! I thought you were going to dodge this reaction. Can't wait to see the look on your faces as you share our livid outrage... a decade later.
56:03 pretty much my reaction. 😂 "What happened? What is real? Are we still in it?" I was very cautious when Rebuild of Evangelion was announced but it was well worth the wait to have this story streamlined (as much as possible).
I’ve first watched the series in the year 2000 and watched this movie 16 years ago, and watched them both many times since and still don’t get it fully. But I still love it! It’s fine that you guys don’t get it specially this first time, sometimes when I’m happy I resonate with some elements of the franchise, the same when I feel depressed, but I enjoy it every time :) This reactions are awesome! And you guys made it to the end! CONGRATULATIONS! clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap… lol
I'm not sure if all of you want to try out Space Runaway Ideon movie from 1982. It was made for two parts and produced by Yoshiyuki Tomino who known for creating early Gundam series. The movie itself can be found in TH-cam. PS: This 1982 sci-fi/ mecha animated film is the inspiration for End Of Evangelion.
Amazing theories people!! I think you are all right, including the "i don't get a funk". As a side note, the original finale was that self actualization thing, but in a positive way, where Shinji actually comes on top and saves everyone (the congratulations bit of the tv), but Ano, the creator, received so much hate mail (some of which are on the screen during this movie), that he did a dark version were everyone gets liquifyed and Shinji just comes the other side not fully in control and still very deppressed and angry. That will find its reverse in the future finales, as they are many.
I am Glad you guys finally got here :) now imagine a young child watching this.. Yea I'm damaged permanently from this but shows like this and FLCL shaped me as a person. As I grew depressed in my later years it felt more approachable knowing that I wasn't alone and that my interpretation of life was very specific to me. Hilariously I always thought I wasn't as fucked up as Shinji so I could always manage with my struggle. As much as I recommend the rest of the movies, all it really does is show the Creator's Growth with their depression and even if they don't really answer any questions it more shows that life tempers out as it goes on and that even if you feel stuck at the moment, time heals all wounds. Also Mickey's headcannon is so off that the Spear of Longinus is in reach comparatively lmao
I watched this movie blind on late night TV as a teen, years before I saw the series. I always assumed it would've made more sense if I'd seen the show. It did not. Still love it though. Its a hell of an experience.
32:37 why??? Because Gendo has an Adam's embryo in his hand, he needs to put that seed on lilith (Rei's body) to fertilize her and make the forbidden union, that's will make the Gates of guf will open and he could recover Yui, first he wanted to save mankind, then he just want to recover his wife.
Time to watch an Evangelion lore video. There's some good ones out there, I hope you guys are able to delve into it, even if just a little bit. It's quite interesting once you see the whole thing unraveled.
I agree with Mickey that the Magi's access tunnel is weirdly cramped and inconvenient. I also just realized it's probably another symbolic thing, since Ritsuko is in a way crawling into her mother...
Welp, subscribed to patreon just to see this reaction but was honestly quite disappointed. You guys were so good with the introspection and analysis of the messages behind the themes throughout the whole series, but here, at the end, where we it see it all come to its thematic conclusions, you guys seemed to be so over it, Shinji especially, and just took things at face value.
It can be quite confusing when watching for the first time, especially considering they didn't understand a thing about nerv or seele. I wont judge them i didn't understand either when I first watched it
Being so invested in a "its all a dream" theory is such an american thing to do,lmao. Basically, seele wanted to make humanity in to one, while gendo wanted to reunite with yui and live forever as one in the eva,and yui apparently just wanted to be with his son as one together forever,by uniting the fruit of life (angel) and the frui of knowledge (human) in to one, with the help of the mass produced evas (already mentioned in the series) to create an anti AT field (which is what gives everyone a physical indivual form, like kaworu explains) to make every one go back to how they started which happens to be like the LcLthen, everysoul unites into one inside the eva, sharing everyone elses feelings, thought and memories (shown in the last 2 episodes of the show and in the last scenes of the movie),at the end shinji decided to revert everything and go back, while every single human being that got liquified has the chance to come back again if they have the will, just like shinji and asuka.
The way they talked over the entire Misato's death scene, completely nullifying its emotional impact, just because they were offended that she kissed Shinji, is really frustrating...
the tv series ending happened, it's instrumentality. what's happening in the movie are the events happening in the physical world in conjunction with instrumentality.
Finally, the Mass-Produced Eva's are here! They're so cool, my favorite, and I wish we got more scenes of them earlier in the anime. This anime is so intense, and I love it; I'm so glad you guys watched this! 🙏
Theory: The stakes are tombs of the friends that Shinji made wandering the world alone for a while, and when he is lying down Asuka appears, who ended up deciding to return to the world as Shinji, he strangles her to see if it is his hallucination and when she reacts he cry because you are no longer alonee
Short and simple explanation:
Shinji caves in and starts Instrumentality, causing everyone to turn into orange Fanta and morph into one being, with everyone’s consciousness being mixed together so everyone knows everything of each other. Last 2 episodes of the main show are what happens in Shinji’s mind as this is happening. He realizes he wants to live, stops Instrumentality, and everyone can decide for themselves whether or not they want to come back. Shinji and Asuka are the first to do so, Shinji makes sure it’s real by choking Asuka out, Asuka comforts him bc she understands his pain after being morphed with everyone, and she also knows about the hospital scene too-hence the “disgusting” line.
that is certainly one way to look at it....
"short and simple explanation:" I don't think it's definative tho....
holy Jesus you're a hero, I get it all now, the last piece of the puzzle has been solved
THANK YOU I FINALLY FUCKING UNDERSTOOD THE ENDING
Anno actually wasn't getting the "disgusting" line he wanted, it wasn't poignant enough, so Anno asked Asuka's VA, if a man broke into her house, and came into her bedroom while she was sleeping, he could have raped or murdered her, but instead he masturbates over her while she's asleep, how would she react if she woke up? "Disgusting" she said

Mickey clapped himself the entire movie trying to galaxy brain the movie explaining itself in plain terms and its hilarious

OHHH SHITTT I NEVER EVEN NOTICEDD
Note: Yui could have let him in at any point but she didn't BECAUSE SHE FUCKING SUCKS
The whole 3rd impact is a hard reset. Shinji and Asuka are the new Adam and Eve - the biblical ones, I mean.

Asuka in the dream world was his childhood friend not adoptive sister

This is the REAL Asuka

And that was the only show of affection that Asuka gives to Shinji in the entire series and movie franchise.
@@MrDeath5300 yeah, but shinji never ate what shikinami cooked, he only ate part of his Eva 😬😅😬
I'd say that was how Shinji sees Asuka.
Evangelion fans when someone doesn't watch Evangelion before taking an Psychology and Philosophy university course
Literally
Eva fans expecting in-going watchers to have a full grasp on Freudian psychology and themes fr fr
Evangelion has many different themes, some more significant than others while some are there merely to keep the user engaged. The key theme of evangelion is realising your self-worth and opening yourself to others despite the pain it may bring. Take care and love yourself.
I first watched the show at like 12-13 it was still a good watch
Yeah, Mickey should never cook again 😂💀
From his theory here and in the "Drunk NGE" explanation video, man is really going 0 for 100 lmao
The problem is not him cooking. The problem is him taking it and running with it as if it is actually the truth. it wasnt a theory for him he had "figured it out" lmao
I love people theorizing though. That’s the fun of it for new viewers.
LMAO, if there was an Olympic competition for having the wrong take or misunderstanding a piece of media, Micky would have won the Gold Medal.

I will be waiting for the Rebuild reactions! It will be full circle. You will understand everthing (kinda). And by the way, the song is Komm suesser Tod, and was written by Hideaki Anno himself. Read the lyrics, it has a lot to do with the plot of Evangelion.
“it’s all in (main character’s) head” could literally apply to any form of media ever.
While I'm sure there's a way to pull it off in a satisfactory way, 99% of the time it's just a cheap copout because the writer couldn't come up with a better ending.
its all in le head

@@CodeeXD ur definitely right, i’m just saying thats where he’s getting it 😂 he might just be on a ramble though
Mickey is not dropping this dream theory.
The one thing I will say is that this movie completely made me love asuka by far the best character in this series.
Shinji is ridiculously clear of the rest of the cast
@@deanward6001He's good but idk about all of them, that's a wild opinion.
- Shinji is battling with his depression trying to decide if he should live or give up
- The human instrumentality is a project created and supported by people who are afraid of getting hurt and hurting other people (Ikari mentions he shouldn't get close to shinji because he doesn't want to hurt him, also he wants the instrumentality to happen so he can get rid of the pain from the death of his wife and be with her again)
- The events from ep 25/26 are what goes through Shinji's (and everyone's) mind while the instrumentality is happening
-Shinji chokes Asuka when they come back because during the instrumentality he did it but there's no reaction from Asuka meaning it wasn't real, since she reacts this time it means she's alive and it's real, that's why he's crying.
A different answer to a different problem
In the anime ending, Shinji seeks the will to live and how to love himself because he can't live with who he is and fears that, while he wishes people were kinder to him, he also feels that he deserves that, he's a coward.
In this movie, Shinji seeks a why to live, but not because he can't love himself (a bit of that too) but because he just fucking HATES THIS WORLD, because the world hurts him, why live in a world where people only hurt you? who don't understand you?
In the anime Shinji finds an answer which is rather wholesome, in this movie he also finds one? like
He does find an answer, but it's a bit more cynical
he actually comes to the same realization here that he does in the series..it's just presented in a bleaker way, but he ultimately rejected instrumentality by coming to the same conclusions. in the end, he chose to accept the pain that comes with life because he still gets to live a life (accepting himself in the process) as well as everyone else if they so choose to come back, which asuka was the first to do so (which also represents her growth as a person after all that she's been through). to me, its a lot less cynical and a lot more of a hopeful ending after the chaos the series and movie presented up to that point.
I believe that the TV Ending complements EOE's ending, with the series being Shinjis apart of instrumentality
You don’t get Evangelion. Evangelion gets you.
Exactly. The Instructment tally project completed them.
What is Mickey waffling about LMAO
Basically he just realizes that this is not what he wanted. When Rei rejected Gendo, she basically gave the option to Shinji but then Shinji realized that for him, he needed the physical world from before in order to understand himself.
So now people can come back if they want to. And i have seen some people blame Shinji for destroying the world, but Gendo would have done it anyways. Which its actually possible that the original NGE Ending is one where Gendo becomes God since at the end of that we see him with Yui.
Ok, I've seen this movie a thousand times in my youth, but right now, at this very moment, after 20 years, I feel like I understand the ending perfectly.
it´s kinda funny that micky get the escapist dream as the reality and the reality as the escapist dream xd
Well in a way he's right, considering the author was very depressed when he wrote this it was sort of a escapist dream for him.

42:07 I really "Like" this scene in a narrative and technical level, in the end of the anime Shinji says that "It's ok for me to be here in this world!"

Micky : this movie is all over the place. Nah bro you’re the one all over the place, what do you mean Asuka is Shinji sister and this is all dream 😭
3:28 She is Yuko Miyamura, who plays Asuka Langley Soryu.😊

4:01 This is the emblem of "STAR CHILD", a label within King Records that sold EVA's early OSTs.They have also released albums for Sunrise productions such as Gundam, as well as many voice actors.

4:19 At the time, I was shocked and delighted to see the Eirin (Japan Film Ethics Review Organization) permission mark, which should be sacred to filmmakers, turned into 3DCG like this😆
27:51 Yes, this is definitely break time.🤭
When Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" was released in theaters, the movie was three and a half hours long, so the word "break" was displayed on the screen during the movie to encourage people to go to the toilet. This was done to imitate the movie, and it was necessary to split the movie into episodes 25 and 26, which are written in Roman numerals, to contrast with episodes 25 and 26, which are written in Chinese numerals in the TV version.😌
45:46 And now we have the voice actors for the three goddesses Misato, Rei, and Asuka.

46:15 Those are mostly threats that Anno and Gainax received because of the original ending for anime of Eva
only one of them is, most of them were positive

"Comatitties" 🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏
At this point I definitely enjoy the show finale more.
"The last thing she did was kiss a minor" 😂😂
Also why Misato kisses Shinji. She only knows how to do sexual stuff to confort others. Doesnt know how to be a proper mother/mentor
Yo im dead where did Micky get the idea that Gendoh is abusive towards Yui and that Asuka is an adopted child 💀🫠
And that`s it, The End of Evangelion. A film that almost nobody understands at first view.
Shinji: kills everyone. rejects instrumentality and comes back because he realizes that it wasn't what he wants.
Asuka: rejects instrumentality and comes back to tell Shinji he's disgusting. Fucking savage.
51:00 Marketa with the iconic Shinji chair pose 😆
Who let Micky cook?
Its crazy how obvious it is that micky looked up like everything before watching it
What the hell... I just finished the show and movies again and was in the mood for a reaction... and you guys just uploaded it.
Never let Micky cook again
❤️🤎🤎❤️🧡😂
I highly respected and appreciated how deeply invested Mickey was in his theory and personal interpretation of his overall big picture -despite being 100% incorrect- 😂
I love you Mickey, keep being amazing on camera my brother.
This movie HAS to be seen on his original lenguaje... the acting voice on this movie its a must do for the rest of the world.
I love reading and hearing theories about this
Finally!!!!!! I thought you were going to dodge this reaction. Can't wait to see the look on your faces as you share our livid outrage... a decade later.
56:03 pretty much my reaction. 😂 "What happened? What is real? Are we still in it?"
I was very cautious when Rebuild of Evangelion was announced but it was well worth the wait to have this story streamlined (as much as possible).
Oh you're a og i respect it 🫡
I'm not sure if all of you want to try out Space Runaway Ideon movie from 1982.
I do think you really need to see the LAST film at some point. It's so beautiful & different you'll cry with joy.
21:51 Spidey’s face is the greatest thing ever lmao and my exact reaction to that scene
I enjoyed this too much, waiting for the rebuild in youtube
I watched this movie blind on late night TV as a teen, years before I saw the series. I always assumed it would've made more sense if I'd seen the show. It did not. Still love it though. Its a hell of an experience.
Congratulation, Normies. You have reached level two.
Folding Ideas Cameo! What an unexpected delight!
God, how can Mickey be so WRONG about everything he says?! that's almost admirable
I never could go through the whole movie by myself. It wasn't that this movie was too scary, but was just so uncomfortable
Thank fucking gawd y'all uploaded this to TH-cam. I wanted to see this so bad, but def not paying for patreon.
Now you have to watch the Rebuilds!
To be fair, on a recent rewatch I felt DONE with the move by the last 15 minutes or so.
OMG I have been waiting for this video!!!
Once again reccomending the Mega64 Evangelion in Five Minutes sketches. Hilarious and explains the show surprisingly well.
I gotta say that the reaction was very similar to how I felt and the editing was very much a personification of that.
I’m pretty sure he couldn’t get into the cockpit but maybe I’m wrong
I said it when you guys posted your reaction to the first episode. You weren't ready.
The way they talked over the entire Misato's death scene, completely nullifying its emotional impact, just because they were offended that she kissed Shinji, is really frustrating...
Yeah but it's a reasonable reaction for your first time watching it
she really should not have done that though he's 14
This movie haunts my waking dreams I just simply can’t explain it
The Third Impact crawled so the Rumbling could walk. Bow down to the OG!
LOVE Chris's Spring Breakers comparison. So on point and two great movies.
the tv series ending happened, it's instrumentality. what's happening in the movie are the events happening in the physical world in conjunction with instrumentality.
it's is funny they think that when they make the connection with the deaths shown in the anime ending...
Finally, the Mass-Produced Eva's are here! They're so cool, my favorite, and I wish we got more scenes of them earlier in the anime. This anime is so intense, and I love it; I'm so glad you guys watched this! 🙏
i love how you guys didn’t understand NOTHING
Does the double negative imply they understood everything? Either way I think it’s normal to come out of this movie confused asf
@@saskatiZ I just never really payed attention to the seele calls lol
Theory:
The stakes are tombs of the friends that Shinji made wandering the world alone for a while, and when he is lying down Asuka appears, who ended up deciding to return to the world as Shinji, he strangles her to see if it is his hallucination and when she reacts he cry because you are no longer alonee
