Thanks M8. Got Record Irwin from Screwfix and a Faithful off Amazon. Both are Number 5s The Irwin has plastic knobs and is set-up for scrub. The Faithful with an upgrade 3mm blade is set-up for finishing. Aye they both took an hour-ish each of fettling to work better. They work, are they the best they can be? I doubt that, as they are the first pair I have ever owned and set them up offa this here TH-cam thingie. Gonna take the syrup finish off the Faithful, not made-up ma mind about the plastic yet. You & the missus take care & stay safe.
The cheap Chinese and Indian planes use high-speed steel for their irons. While they hold an edge, they are very difficult to sharpen. The fit and finish on the cheaper planes leaves a lot to be desired. My Groz (Indian made) plane had a sole that took hours to flatten and sloopy machining creates so much backlash the yoke only progresses or retracts the iron a couple of mm each way. That said, it's an adequate scrub plane. The high carbon O1 or A2 tool steels are much more forgiving.

This Axminster is very similar in quality... It had a hollow which took ages to flatten🤔
