it basically means whoever asks the guard who's going to die in order to reassure himself he is likely not one of the guys to die (because the guard will tell him one of the other guys is chosen to die regardless if the guy who asks is chosen or not), is going to unknowingly increase their chance of being one of the chosen to be killed due to simple mathematic probabilities. In other words, this doesn't make logical sense in any SINGLE scenario you find yourself in; But when accounting for ALL scenarios possible, probability says the guy who you don't know is going to live or die is going to more likely to live than the one who asks the guard in the first place. Yeah my brain still doesn't understand, but math does.
What's critical to understanding this is getting that the guard CANNOT tell Michael about his fate. So let's consider this. Say you are person #1. When the guard tells you person 3 is going to die he is giving you ABSOLUTELY NO INFORMATION. You ALREADY knew 2 out of 3 were going to die so naming someone other than yourself is like saying "the sky is blue", thanks buddy. It's only an illusion that the information is limiting the result set. No useful information has been conveyed. But if he COULD tell you about yourself and still said person 3 THEN that's a different story since you've knocked one off and it becomes a coin-flip at that point. But he CAN mention person 2 if he wanted to and DIDN"T which gives him a 66% change of him living (33.3% chance for you and the other guy is already dead). Let me know if that helped.

Let me try to explain. First of all Jake dying doesn't make your chances worse. It just increases Kevin's chances. The guard HAS to say that Jake dies if Kevin lives, but he can either say that Kevin OR Jake dies if Michael lives. Therefore, there is a 100% chance that the guard says Jake dies if Kevin lives. And there is a 50% chance that the guard says Jake dies if Michael lives. (50% chance of guard saying Kevin dies too) So, its twice as likely that Kevin will be the one who will live when the guard says Jake will die because he was less likely to say Jake will die if Michael was the one who lived.
@@dixen9116 Or do you?... Weed *can* actually make some people hallucinate, depending on the strength/make-up of the strain, one's tolerance and one's brain chemistry.
+JonnyInfinite I watched and listened to it multiple times by hitting pause and thinking about it... I think I have understood it. The catch in it is that Michael was never supposed to know about himself. That's why his chance remains 1/3 whether he was told Jake would die or Kevin would
Jan Sten Adámek I know I understood the prisoner thing and I think he explained it very clearly, I'm just asking what the matter was and if I could explain it to the writer of the comment.
+• Irem • the idea is that Michael had a 1/3 chance of not being executed but since the guard said jake is one of the ones to be executed, that made Michael and Kevin the only ones left so he has a 1/2 chance of not being executed. But that actually make it worse because he has a higher chance of being executed now.
so if being normal in 36 of 36 variables is a 1 in a million chance, does that mean there are roughly 7,000 completely normal and average people on earth right now? with absolutely no interesting traits or features?
not really, because there are more than 36 independent variables you could measure people by. But with only 36 the likelihood an individual would be within the most average 68.3% (1 standard deviation) is surprisingly huge!
Pipboy3004 Thats quite an egocentric view my friend, we aren't that complex, its "mesurment resolusion" that you pick makes things complex. You can increase masurment variables indefinatly for all the things, even for most basic particles)))
7:52 I honestly think that the next dozen seconds or so are completely unscripted. The look on Veratasiums face is so bitchin'. If this really was on the fly, then this is one of the coolest moments I've ever seen on TH-cam.
What if I want you to be abnormal and you are just that- would that make you normal? if so you are no longer abnormal and not what I want, which would make you abnormal and so on and so forth. Paradoxical my friend.
I don't know if it will help, but here is another way of thinking about it. Say this procedure is repeated day after day, for 300 days with 3 prisoners in cells A B & C, and in an even distribution 100 times the prisoner in A lived, 100 times B and 100 times C. Each day the jailer goes to the prisoner in A and either tells that B dies or tells him that C dies. You can see that A's chances have not changed, he always knew the fate of another, yet he still died on 200 days. Now A died 200 times, and the named prisoner died each of the 300 hundred days, so the un-named prisoner only died on 100 days. However, with additional knowledge of the Jailer's psychology as the prisoner in A you may be able to draw a different conclusion. If you know the jailer always says B will die if it is true and only says C will die if he does and B doesn't: then whenever he says C will die it means B lives and you are toast, but if he says B dies your odds actually improve to 1/2. And if you don't know that the jailer always makes this gesture to the prisoner in A or if he only sometimes does, then the question of whether he is more likely to talk to a man doomed to die or one allowed to live can greatly affect your odds. anyway, an interesting ponder
Michael has a 1 in 3 chance of being the one who's selected to live. Since the guard has two options of what to tell Michael if he is selected to live, there's a 1 in 2 chance he says James. The combined chance of Michael being selected to live and the guard telling him that James will die is 1 in 6 (1/2 x 1/3 = 1/6). Kevin's chances of being selected to live are also 1 in 3. The guard only has one option of what to tell Michael. He can only say that James will die. This means that the combined chance of Kevin being selected to die and the guard telling Michael that James will die are still 1 in 3 (1 x 1/3 = 1/3). I hope this helps
Daniel Baqueiro Very nice explanation. Little correction in the last sentence. This means that the combined chance of Kevin being selected to LIVE* and the guard telling Michael that James will die are still 1 in 3 (1 x 1/3 = 1/3).
KLX First, that's not how you spell "homosexual". Second, that comment isn't sexual in any way. Third, you're considering someone's sexual orientation to be naturally a bad thing, which is extremely bigoted.
I remember having a moment where I was using the word "Normal" in a video to talk about Pokemon. I ended up saying normal so much the word started feeling even more normal. Normal is a great word
I have a question related to the 3 prisoners statement. If you consider what the guard says (2:57 and 4:50) and you already know that Jake is going to die (3:09) then why are you still considering the possibility of Jake being the chosen one to live (4:11)? Here is the problem, if you already know that Jake is going to die, you can't keep considering to possibility of Jake being the chosen one to life. If you get rid of Jake, then you find yourself in a new situation where there are only 2 guys and one of them is going to die tomorrow, or in other words, You and Kevin have 1/2 possibilities of dying tomorrow.
At 4:11 he's simply listing all possibilities of what the guard could say for each outcome of the problem; it's not in relation to what the guard already said. This problem is extremely similar to the Monty Hall problem, which has been known to be hard to comprehend as deductive reasoning makes it seem obvious that there is an equal 1/2 chance for each of the remaining 2 possibilities, but the variable of the giver of information (the guard in this problem, or the host in the Monty Hall problem) KNOWING the outcome already and giving information based on what they already know and being restricted on what they can actually tell you (they can't tell you who lives or your own fate, and in the case of MH problem, the host can't tell you if you've chosen the correct door and he can't tell you if one of the 2 remaining doors is correct) then the information lets gives you a larger hint as to the outcome of the situation, leaving a 1/3 chance to one outcome and a 2/3 chance to the other. This problem is well known for being very hard to understand, so don't get frustrated when you don't get it immediately. the channel Numberphile has a great video explaining the Monty Hall problem, and even Mythbusters touched on the subject of this problem.
siffran l Well, basic probability teaches the answer to this problem, but the way the information is presented somewhat disguises the extra information and how to utilize it. Also, at a glance, the answer seems obvious.
What will happen is already determined from the beginning. What the guard says doesn't change the outcome. Imagine you are Mike, the guard can always tell you the name of someone who will die, still leaving you with a 1/3 chance of living and therefore the other person with a 2/3. Before you are told anything by the guard, you know that the chance of one of the other 2 surviving is 2/3 because they are 2 people out of 3 in the game, and that will NEVER change, no matter what the guard says because it has already been determined. Then you are told that Jake will die, living Kevin the 2/3 probability of surviving. I know it's complicated to understand but if you try it out in real life or do a simulation you will see how it does work this way.
Lope Bravo And what I asked was... if the guard talks to Kevin, he could say the exact same thing... which by your calculation means that kevin now has a 1/3 chance of surviving. Or, 2/3 chance that one of you will survive. It's not the same as monty hall problem, but I am unsure how it's different.
I had a really self-conscious moment at 8:02 when Michael said, "But what about you, are you normal?" Then, appropriately, Derek looks at the camera in a seemingly judgemental fashion. *insecurity intensifies*
There aren't any colors that are visible to us that we haven't seen, but there are colors that we can't see. Infrared, ultraviolet, x-rays, gamma rays, radio waves, microwaves are all the same thing as light, but with different wavelengths that make them invisible to humans. If we could see them, they would be different colors.
What if there was a material wich reflected a wavelength we couldn't see. If we say it was a solid material wich couldn't be seen through like glass, what would we see? We wouldn't be able to see anything. But what does nothing look like to our eye?
Samuel Falk If it only reflects a wavelength we couldn't see, then the material would absorb most of the visible light, therefore it would just look black to us.
My favorite part that keeps me coming back to this video has to be Derek getting Michael's gist and starts looking quizzical for the camera, then he looks back at Michael to see if he's having as much fun, whom is struggling in the flashbacks
But most people have two legs so I'm sure the average number of legs peoe have is two. The average number of testicles people have is one, because only males have testicles
idk anymore His point is that there are amputees as well as birth defects making some human beings have fewer than two legs. However, there are a much fewer amount of people who have three legs or more (almost 0, except for a tiny number of birth defects I suppose). Thus the average of legs per human being is less than two.
idk anymore If even one person on the planet has less than two legs, the average is below two. Averages are a pretty terrible way to measure most things.
But considering how many people _do_ have two legs compared to people who don't, the average would be so close to two that it pretty much wouldn't matter. You could probably reach that number of legs by tripping and scraping your knee.
The reason Michael and Derek are standing outside is because if their combined brain power was confined to a single room it would create a singularity.
It's so crazy that I remember watching this video 20 times over trying to figure out why the prisoner's dilemma was true and never understood it, but now I just watched this 1 time and I completely understand it now

I'm confused as fuck on the whole Jake dying making your chances worse
Yeah I think it's just the way he drew it that made it appear that way, but if it is real I have no idea why.
Tristan Taylor That's kinda what I was thinking, but I was getting so irritated that I couldn't figure out what he was talking about
Let me try to explain.

Hey there. Vsauce here. Whats freedom?
didn't understand a word of that prisoner thing
+JonnyInfinite I watched and listened to it multiple times by hitting pause and thinking about it... I think I have understood it. The catch in it is that Michael was never supposed to know about himself. That's why his chance remains 1/3 whether he was told Jake would die or Kevin would
How come?
+• Irem • If he cannot know, his probability cannot change.
Vsauce True, you can't really define an individual person by only 36 variables, even if that seems a lot I think we're much more complex than that.
Pipboy3004 None of that made any sort of sense to me in any way imaginable.
I wish I was smarter regarding this subject
No idea what you guys just said
Pipboy3004
Thats quite an egocentric view my friend, we aren't that complex, its "mesurment resolusion" that you pick makes things complex. You can increase masurment variables indefinatly for all the things, even for most basic particles)))
To me personally, that was one of the most confusing videos I've seen from you in a while, but I still loved it! Great work!:)
Yeah, I felt that the bits of facts are scattered all over the place :/... maybe he's still experiencing jet lag
or maybe this is just not a "normal" video
Lim Li Yang I think he was trying to be weird in a video about normalcy, maybe to emphasize that to be weird is normal.
u not normal
7:52 I honestly think that the next dozen seconds or so are completely unscripted. The look on Veratasiums face is so bitchin'. If this really was on the fly, then this is one of the coolest moments I've ever seen on TH-cam.
'Being normal' seems to be when you are everything everyone else wants.
^ This.
So, in short, impossible.
Poetic.
What if I want you to be abnormal and you are just that- would that make you normal? if so you are no longer abnormal and not what I want, which would make you abnormal and so on and so forth. Paradoxical my friend.
The real problem are not those who are crazy, but those who pretend they aren't.
After numerous times of replaying that prisoner scenario, I finally understand that I cannot understand it.
Lol
I hope this helps
wow you tooo
i was like wtf
Daniel Baqueiro Very nice explanation. Little correction in the last sentence.
This means that the combined chance of Kevin being selected to LIVE* and the guard telling Michael that James will die are still 1 in 3 (1 x 1/3 = 1/3).
Michael you're just so freaking awesome. If you were my college professor I'd probably never stop going to school
You do realise how home sexual that sounds right?
KLX What the fuck are you talking about? How is that in any way "home sexual"?
KLX First, that's not how you spell "homosexual". Second, that comment isn't sexual in any way. Third, you're considering someone's sexual orientation to be naturally a bad thing, which is extremely bigoted.
Home sexual means he gets arosed whenever he leaves the home for college, I did not mean homosexual, jesus guys stop being so Antigay

I've watched so many TH-camrs and I forgot how great Vsauce is, he's the best!
AeronauticsPlays
Atleast in sweden it is taught quite early for those who are going to study more math. Its pretty much a big part of statistics
siffran l Well, basic probability teaches the answer to this problem, but the way the information is presented somewhat disguises the extra information and how to utilize it.

Vsauce plz do this: Is there any color we haven't seen?
Check the video "our narrow slice". xD
Tushant Mirchandani i love the word slice it reminds me of pie
My favorite part that keeps me coming back to this video has to be Derek getting Michael's gist and starts looking quizzical for the camera, then he looks back at Michael to see if he's having as much fun, whom is struggling in the flashbacks
If you have two legs, you have an above average number of legs.
You could probably reach that number of legs by tripping and scraping your knee.
chaosof99 Yeah, but it's nowhere near 1 so, it's still average to have 2 legs.
This videos make me feel smarter, but also dumber because I keep rewinding them everytime I miss or didn't get something.
