I suggest that this dance should be shown to all Khmer in all provinces in Cambodia if we want young Khmer generations to learn and support. If no action is taken for educating our generation, this dance will be only left in the city like before.
Interview with Son Soubert digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/a12c5400-3451-0131-ec7d-3c075448cc4b This is the interview with his excellency Son Soubert on August 21, 2009 At the Constitutional Council in Phnom Penh His excellency Son Soubert talked about his grandmother, who was a dancer during the reign of King Sisowath. My grandmother was named Puk Proeung. She was daughter of Okna Rajavinichhay Sou Puok. She was born at the end of 19th century and she died in 1973. At that time whenever a minister had a daughter, It was the tradition to offer her to the King. That’s why my grandmother danced in the Royal Palace. Suppaya (Interviewer) I’d like to know if you’ve heard of dance manuscript was written in Thai? Some dancers were reluctant to confirm this. I heard people singing in Thai We should be aware that King Ang Duong stayed in Bangkok. King Mongkut of Thailand helped King Ang Duong take the throne. And drive out Vietnamese troops from Cambodia. When King Ang Duong back to Cambodia some Thais accompanied him. Whether we like it or not, Cambodia was under Thai influence at that time. I heard that at the end of 19th century and in the early 20th , songs were sung in Thai language. It was during the reign of King Sisowath that songs were translated into Khmer. Em Theay still knew Thai songs and she was my grandmother’s student. In the past we didn’t use ‘Pinpeat’ music but Thai music. A lot of people during the Angkor era were seized and sent to Thailand. Thais learned from Khmers and preserved the culture until it got back to Cambodia. They all learned how to dance and sing in Thai.
Nationalism is a toxic thing. What was the mindset of Siam and Cambodia back then that allowed them to exchange these culture property. There was no gate-keeping on culture in that time. This allowed arts to flourish in Cambodia after the Vietnamization of it's court and country. In 20th century race relations in Siam force it to make stakes in identity. Cambodia at that time was colonized by the French and they hyperbolized Cambodia's claim on this. Bangkok and Cambodia no longer maintained relations like before. We have allowed nationalism to get in our way arts and culture. This generation cares too much about claiming cultural property and maintaining pride. Now khon is not out of place in what was former Lanna kingdom that was a Burmese-influenced culture, and the people there are resenting Cambodia for maintaining what was taught to them by Bangkok court.
Good to trying to overcome Thai dance by try to improve to delicacy of dance and improve the costume .But Thai dance is still more elegance than Khmer's dance because of Thai is an origin.Thai was create this kind of dance by many influences that include Angkor Wat or not, it does not matter, EMPHASIZE that Thai was create this kind of dance and taught to Khmer at the time of reigning of Ang Duong . But new gen. of Khmer people forgot this fact and try to distort the truth . The fact is still the fact , the feeling at the time of watching Thai dance is difference with watching of Khmer dance. If you want to know the fact please ask to Princess Buppha Devi to ask her predecessor that I tell the truth or not.
Well, u can say that. However, it is another historical fact that Sokhothai Kingdom (c. 1238-1350) was the first Thai-controlled kingdom in history. The Thai also adapted from Hindu-influenced Khmers, who dominated the region from 9th-14th C.E (Southeast Asia in the New International Era by Robert Dayley & Clark D. Neher). Moreover, it is also a fact that Thai intentionally invaded Cambodia before the Cold War and controlled half of Cambodia's territory and also claimed that Angkor Wat is Thailand's while Angkor Wat had been built before Sokhaothai was born. Fortunate for Thailand, the country was able to escape from the devastation of colonialism by super powers. Under the 3 concepts of Modernization, buffer zone, and extra-territory right for foreigners to exploit Thailand, King Rama the 5th brought Thailand to a safe heaven of colonization in Southeast Asia. But unfortunate for Cambodia who were colonized by the France and later was under the destruction of Khmer rouge regime, millions were killed, human resource were destroyed, culture was eliminated, religion was abandoned. We suffered so many things. According to a Cambodian traditional dancer, I am a Cambodian robam dancer, I’ve been dancing since I was 12 years old. I’m in my mid 30s now. From what I learned from all of my master instructors and my late aunt who danced during the Sisowath era (KING SISOWATH) this particular style of movements/costume and white make up was how royal Cambodian dancers looked during the late 1800s and 1900s. We had the capes where the sbai (shawl that covers left shoulders) covered both shoulders. We had crowns that were totally different from what they looked today. The ancient Khmer empire has sculptures of ancient dances that can be traced back to the angkorian period of the 7th century. When the Khmer empire finally ended during the 14th century, the Ayutthaya king invaded and seized the royal ballet dancers which was about 2000 of them. From there is how Siam learned Khmer royal ballet. During the French protectorate era, king Sisowath 1906 took his royal ballet dancers to the French colonial exposition in France. There, was the first time ever Cambodian ballet was exposed to audiences. In the early 1940s-1960s Queen Kossamak wanted to modify the costumes and make up a bit to differentiate from Siam art. The reason why back then during the 1800s and 1900s we used white make up on our skin was because in Khmer mythology, gods and goddess had white skin. A lot of the costumes, green and gold are the most popular colors for fabric because God’s and goddess were green. Princess bopha devi is trying to revive the “old style” and keep it alive and exhibit to the audience how it looked like back then because no one would have seen them except the dancers themselves and the king. There maybe similarities between Thai and Khmer robam but those who are in this art knows the absolute difference and style the way we dance versus the way the Thais dance (credit to @jamaica rouge ).
