I like when things in an image seem to pop out from a border. Like when a stream of water that looks like it keeps on flowing past the border. And with comic strips, it's more exciting when something goes outside their boxes, like if a character is throwing something and it kinda joins the next box of what is happening next. I like seeing artists go outside the box for comics, it's entertainment to our eyes. I once started creating a comic book when I was in 6th grade. Few years ago, my kids saw my first sketches. My story line needed more work than the drawings, lol.
I took art in Middle School and my teacher went over this. She would say "try to fill most of the space and find composition". You've explained it in more depth and the visual demonstration is super helpful! 🙂
I've been trying to re-take art and it's like, my sketches are looking better already, but I keep feeling like they tend to lack something in general. Gonna try implementing negative space play in practice rounds to see if that's my missing je-ne-sais-quoi. Undoubtedly it's going to help and be fun either way, so why not? Saving this to the essentials playlist in case I ever forget again. :) it's lovely to see you doing longer vids!
These long form videos are so useful! I'm learning stuff I've not seen mentioned anywhere else before. Every source of negative space I've come across only talks about the small areas within a subject. Never seen any source mention anything about how borders come into play. 10/10 will try asap.
This is SO helpful! As someone who struggles to make any interesting backgrounds, hearing it broken down is so enlightening! It's something that'll stick with me forever
Great video man. Negative space can really help me stop thinking about what I’m drawing and see the shapes I need to draw to help with accurate proportions and stuff, but to think about it compositionally is a really great tip! Thank you for another great video.
Well, it IS science and math, but it's also art. Science and Math aren’t rules (though they are sometimes mistakenly described that way). They're just tools to help us describe and understand the world around us. There are SO many variables that influence what we like and don't like! You are absolutely right that we need to keep trying different things and experimenting to find what makes our art special and fun! ❤
this helped a whole lot! like your gouache and watercolor tutorial shorts, you have a great way of breaking down a style or technique so that it makes more sense without making it technical or intimidating to follow along. with the longer videos, it’s really great that you can explain your processes and influences more. thanks so much!
These longer videos are so much more informative and are really helpful! Thanks Scott! I do like the shorts as well because they are good to watch if I’m stuck and need a quick solution!
Aaaaa I love thisss!!! Thank you Scott!! You’re such an incredibly kind person, and your explanations are very friendly for this fellow autistic persons brain ☺️ You’re like TH-cam’s friendly art uncle 🎨
Thank you for this wonderful video, I've always had trouble with background and I never really thought to do borders like this. Your art is absolutely gorgeous, thank you for sharing it with us
That is fascinating!! I actually did go to art school, but I really don’t think that was covered nearly as well as you just explained it! Can’t wait to play with my negative spaces more. Loving the more in depth videos!
These longer videos are fantastic. Inspiring and informative. Please keep up the great work. Being an artist with no formal training, I constantly look forward to building on my education from Professor Sava.
Just wanted to drop by and say that I am really liking the longer videos. Shorts are great at grabbing my attention, but these bite sized 5 minute videos are perfect for when I need a breather and wanna relax and learn about art!
I really love how this explanation is framed. It's half-explanation, half-exploration, and we get so many details in your thought process over the course of it that it feels like this is stuff we could easily notice and implement ourselves. It's a workshop, not a lecture, where the master isn't telling you what to do or avoid, but just showing you some interesting spots and asking what you could do with that, all Socratic style. And in the end, it feels like the brain just taught itself, which makes it much easier to remember next time! Love your stuff, Scott, you're the best!
Love this! I've never really studied up on art, so this is a refreshing concept for me. It's gonna help me rethink the composition of my stuff in the future. Thank you! ^_^
This is an eye opener! You've discussed it in a more practical way than when my professor discussed this at 1st year 😅. I needto actually work on this to enhance my composition, thanks!
Dear Scott- thank you so much for showing all of your processes of creating art. It helps so many aspiring artists, myself included. Just thank you. 🙏🏼
One of my art teachers talked a lot about the importance of negative space between objects/subjects when you’re working with multiple objects/subjects as well. The amount of negative space between subjects and the shape of it can really change a piece as well. Like that reference where the person is holding the scroll. That’s a really interesting use of negative space because of the angle of the scroll compared to the person. Changing where subjects/objects are in relation to each other can really change the feel of the piece
I think this is a really great startingpoint for people trying out negative space. When i first learned about it, it was in similar forms as those logos, so i associated it with smart "visual puns", not a general tool in Art. This feels like a way more freeing approach.
Awesome! Another wonderful explanation of something that, as a non-artist in the graphic department, I had no idea existed but that is sure to blow my mind and keep me thinking about it for days 🤩 Also, as a theater actress, I am super interested in all things space and how I can use it to improve my craft. I can't wait to see how I can put this into action on scence! ❤
hi scott, im a huge fan and doing GCSE art at my school. i love ur art and have been watching ur videos since 2021 and u have inspired me to become better. anyway, i hpe you have a nice day ; )
thank you so much for this video! I have been taught so many times what positive and negative space is but never how to utilise in your artwork. This makes so much more sense now and I'm definitely going to keep this in mind going forward
I have only learned about negative space in the context of photography, and thought of it as big parts of the image with "nothing". Either for a sense of scale (eg small bird in a blue sky), sense of movement (eg a lot of space behind a running person), for composition (eg placing the object in the golden ratio on the background), or for the purpose of having space for words (like a title cover for a magazine). I love your take on it, thinking of negative space as shapes that can add interest!
I love these videos!!! The way you explain it makes it so easy and fun to understand, I struggle a lot to understand these kind of useful techniques to improve my art, but every time I watch your videos I instantly get it!!! Thank you so much for making these art tutorials, you are so nice 🥺
Hello Scott! I've been subscribed for a few months now. All of your drawings always inspire me! I'm trying watercolor too, and I absolutely adore your watercolor drawings :)). I've never knew about what "Negative Space" was in art, but now I know. I guess it's something to cover up those bland background parts, and that's gonna help me make may art way more unique to look at. Thank you for the information Scott :DDD!
this really helped me understand the concept of negative space, I used to be a bit confused but now I understand it, or *at least* the basics, thanks scott! (oh and btw, I love the longer (and short) content btw! looking forward to watch them all!)
I was inspired by another of your video to draw something every day. The way you showcased negative space (especially the one with the black dress and the last one with the flowing hair) makes me want to draw with negative space for tomorrow's drawing
This was super helpful! I never had a very good understanding of how to use negative space effectively, but after watching this video I have so many ideas on how to improve my artwork! Thank you so much!
negative space is super important no matter what type of art you’re doing! one of the most important aspects of graffiti writing is negative space, and it’s about as far removed from portraits like Scott does as you can get!
I recently have been using a casting shadow in some of my works to fill up negative space; it works out great in certain situations (for example when the skintone is warm, I made the casting shadow a cool colour and that contrasts nicely. It's so easy in digital art too since I just copy my flat colours layer, re-colour it, and transform/skew the layer. The drawing I'm currently working on doesn't really fit a casting shadow (aesthetically), and I want to show off a full body outfit so I have to figure out how to approach the negative space in this one. Anyway, nice video!
its unfortunate that the algorithm isnt picking up your longform videos. keep trying! these videos are fantastic and the algorithm will eventually realize people will watch you
Question: is negative and positive space relative? For example, if something is in the foreground, there may nit be blank space on the canvas, but within the foreground there is space with nothing there
I didn't realize I could change the boarder like this. I just put them in a box and call it a day ❤ you open my eyes I will apply this in my art quickly
I'm really enjoying these longer videos! Thank you! 😀👍🏻

I love how cartoon and manga artists use negative space in their panels. It alone can create a wide range of emotions.
You are providing the best teaching tool you! Scott thank you for taking the time to make art fun and a great learning experience.
Absolutely My Pleasure ♥
I'm absolutely loving your long videos! I'm learning so much. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
You are so welcome!
Yay for a new video, I don’t enjoy drawing, but I thoroughly enjoy watching art being created! Thanks for the video!!!

The algorithim is truly doing you dirty by not promoting your longer videos, they’re a gem
You explain these ideas so well! It makes it so easy to understand! Thank you!
I'm so glad!
Thank you! Explained so wonderfully

Wow!!! Amazing art lesson with real examples. This was better than any art class I have taken.
Thank you for fleshing out this concept ❤
This is the best explanation of negative space I've seen. Thank you
HOLY CRAP, thank you so much Scott. No other video I've ever watched explained negative space so simply and intuitively as you have, THANK YOU!! 🙏
You're very welcome!

Never paid a lot of attention to negative space. This video might've changed it.

i love watching these videos. i rarely do art. they're just that entertaining, i guess.
I love these longer videos. Please can you make a tutorial on figure and anatomy. Thank youu!
Wow! This actually really helps!
2:10 and 3:33 are really great ways to make negative space. I should give that a go sometime. Great video!
thank you scott!
Very helpful!
I never thought about the negative space while drawing, though I had heard the theory before. This was wonderfully simple yet thorough. Thank you :)
I love this! I never actually knew what negative space referred to before but this makes me think a lot.
