Hey Jack, if you haven't read Khaleid Hosseini's works before, you really should! I would recommend "The Kite Runner" and "A Thousand Splendid Suns". His books are so so beautiful and almost poetic. They're both real tear-jerkers.
The Kite Runner is about a little boy in Afghanistan with an almost absent father and his memories of a terrible childhood trauma.
A Thousand Splendid Suns is about two women, Mariam and Laila, in Afghanistan who get married to the same man, albeit at different times. Mariam is unable to give her husband a child and so he takes Laila as his wife. The story then follows the almost mother-daughter like relationship of the two women.
His stories are hauntingly beautiful that leave you aching for more. I would highly recommend them if you hadn't read them yet. I would also loveee to hear your perspective as an English Literature graduate and as someone who works in the publishing world.
Thank you for taking the time to read this (if at all)!

I'm not one to comment a lot on TH-cam videos but I'm just so amazed at how you talk about books because usually "intellectuals" would just drop different art/literary movements/concepts and leave them at that, just to appear "superior" or "smart". But you're just really out here spreading your love for literature and learning that you make sure that you and your viewers are on the same page by explaining some terms that maybe not a lot of people know.

I love how klara and the sun is such a participative, individual experience for the reader, letting our imagination take possession of the gaps in the story or the words left unsaid. For me, it touched upon a desire to humanise inanimate objects or animals as our lives get overwhelmed by technology, social media and the isolation of the pandemic. This was especially so for the last sequence in the book which left me a knotted up with nostalgia and grief. Besides climate change there was also the subtle concept of ascension, of not only robots trying to cross the uncanny valley to unlock the human heart, but humans actively trying to remove certain parts of their humanity as well. Overall an unforgettable book for me

Great description and review! Love your points about cubism. We're so rooted in her perception and I think it's so interesting how we empathise with Klara's point of view so much we naturally give her emotions which she doesn't actually feel as a robot. So the ending felt so tragic and lonely to me, but then I have to remind myself it's a positive ending for her since she filled her function. I keep thinking about it too and the book has a haunting quality in the best way.

The themes around the human condition are timeless and done so well. Klara seeks to understand the human heart and, as it turns out, she has developed the biggest heart of them all. You would never get that devotion from a human. The end will restore your faith in decency and devastate you all at once. A masterwork in my opinion.

I really liked the movie „Her“. In fact it was the first time for me to get in contact with the concept of an advanced AI that is way more then a computer or a simple robot. And I honestly think that having watched this movie took away the pleasure of reading this book a bit. The concept wasn‘t new to me. My favourite bit about the book was the beginning. Klara observing everything from her store and I was amazed by Ishiguros writing style and really hyped it. When she left the store the book became more of a children book. In comparison to her friend in the store, Klara wasn‘t all that naive but the writing style became very simple and naive halfway through the book. I found the god like figure in form of the sun very clever but by the end I hated it - which has to do with the ending of the book. I really liked Klaras main end message but in terms of relationships the end made no sense to me and left me disappointed. It‘s a 3 star book for me - not a re-read, but good enough to read on a holiday.

Never let me go and Remains of the day are two of my favourite books, so super excited for this one as well - especially after the approval by jack! (Love both of your channels soooo much!)

I am not gonna ask to review any Dickens bcz i hear u r not a fan.
But how about 'the pearl that broke its shell' or 'train to pakistan' also maybe 'wuthering heights' and 'home going'
I read one book that i saw in your videos- the housekeeper and the professor...it was so heart warming but sometimes the struggles of the professor- makes one wanna cry 🥺

So far I have only read The Remains of the Day by him, but absolutely loved that. Never Let Me Go I own, but have yet to read. Once I have done that, I might get Klara and the Sun :) Looking forward to your next reviews. Great idea!

I disliked the book. It had nothing to offer, was annoying, lengthy, mumbling and with no new point to think about.

I feel like I am back in literature class in the best way possible! 😁 I am reading Marie Benedict's The Mystery of Mrs. Christie and Chris Bohjallian's Hour of the Witch right now, but am adding this to my list.
