Looking outside today in sunny old Adelajde. Awesome weathere here for solar and free fuel for your EV. Owning a fuel bowser at home supplied by cheap solar is fantastic compared to 2.20 for a litre of fuel.
Around 3.00 per litre in NZ
@@brianpilley3801probably less sun than Adelaide though😂
My son is an Uber driver. He said, "Changing to an EV and charging at home was like having a big pay rise". He has solar!
@@briansture4353 that's what my brother told me. He charges overnight when costs are lower and the equivalent full tank is only $5!
The heading to this video “Report says”. Which report are you referring to Sam. I’ve seen “reports” that say the opposite so who are we to believe?
Hi viking - you can still get a $6k rebate in Queensland. Plus you can still salary sacrifice an EV with no fbt implications.....
Have had my Model 3 Long Range for 2.5 years and loving it. I charge from 100% solar 99.99% of the time and have had zero problems and no service costs after coving 50,000km. Whats not to like.
Same here. I particularly like never having to scrape ice of my windshield. Just press the defrost button on the app.
We have the same experience. Unfortunately the trolls on this channel and elsewhere trumpeting in loud and triumphant terms the failure of the electric vehicle disruption can't accept that anybody would ever be happy with an electric vehicle because, well you know, they catch fire, the battery only lasts two years, the insurance costs $10,000 a year, no one can repair them, and there's no place to charge them and on a road trip it takes at least 2 hours to charge. Oh and they also burn down your house. When you contradict all these trolling and disinformation memes, people really just don't know what to say except to just reiterate the garbage. It's really quite sad. It's the Triumph of Doctrine and fear over experience and science.
Reminds me of Carl Sagan’s book “A Candle in the Dark”. Going to pick my M3P here in America in a few weeks - first EV in my neighborhood - sad considering it’s a college town.
@@RandyP-jr1ek
I guess it proves common sense doesn't come from a college education.
When you have people looking for cars they can afford at around $20-30k for new and around $20k for used, what EVs are available, or even PHEVs?
Wait a few years and get second hand EVs. GWM Ora starts at 35k drive away so used could be 20k in 3-4 years. Still under warranty... Before you start, battery is LFP which should last 15-20 years. Battery warranty is 8 years unlimited kilometres
Chinese ones...that randomly burst into flames.
Wanting and doing are 2 different things.
Hola, this is Marco a car exporter from China looking for local car dealers in your area. I hope for doing cooperation with local market or you can recommend me to your friends ~ Thank you.
Flexible prices, streamlined logistics, guaranteed quality, and convenient transfers.
China Auto Export Factory Direct Supply.
Export New and Used Cars
Australians have always been a bit slower than Kiwis....we stopped buying them ages ago.
Australia will likely become a renewable energy superpower and net exporter over the next decade. BEV, battery, and solar panel OEMs are being squeezed out of China and looking to expand production and distribution to other markets, including Australia. Australia has access to the best renewable energy technology and products from both the West and the East, as well as your own vast mineral resources. Australia will likely build massive battery supported solar farms. The energy availability will likely draw technology firms to build AI data centers. Eventually, as robotics and factory automation improve, the energy availability will likely also draw highly automated manufacturers.
They may create solar ships that charge batteries offshore in sunny areas and return to port to discharge their energy.
It would work well for some Asian countries.
These ships could charge in an Australian port and set sail to Asia, undersea cable not required.
In my area of NSW with a population around 100k I have seen 2 Teslas.
Their is heaps in my suburb
Sam would say your area is dumb.
My town is 150000 people and there are Teslas around, and a few BYD’s and MGs, but funnily enough there are definitely more little old humble Hyandai Getz’s around than EVs.
In the UK ev's are far from rare they are selling very well
Sometimes, Mr Evans, I think you push too hard to get too many vids out, but I did love the gaff. Most Americans' next electric vehicle will probably be electric here in the US, too, so it seems to be a global phenomenon.
Not a single EV on my street. The target for a E.V. in the U.S. is an older white male with $150,000 annial income
They seem to be a popular retirement car.
@@timothykeith1367 Touche-ish. Though why you'd exclude blacks, hispanics, orientals, etc, I've no idea. And there are many ladies in EVs, too. And as for retired.... guilty as charged, but most people I've seen in EVs have been much, much younger than I, maybe they were leasing? BTW: Leasing a Tesla is a good way to have a fixed cost. The up side: it's a low monthly payment. The downside: there is a big down payment and you can't buy it for the residual at the end of the lease. Plus, if you plan to put a lot of miles on the car, leasing might be a bad idea.
Knowone wants EVs in Canada. The depreciation is terrible.
@@Winters186 I can understand wanting to sell a car if
A) it’s getting more expensive to maintain.
B) you want to get a better performing car.
C) you want a car with the latest features
D) you think a new car will make you happy.
For some people, like me, and for some cars, like Teslas A,B,C and D don’t apply.
So resale is irrelevant.
The typical EV purchaser in the US is a rich, liberal homeowner with a private garage/charger.
A recent Gallup poll in the US showed half of people would not even consider buying an EV, one-third might consider an EV in the future, and one-sixth either owned or seriously considering an EV. So there seems to be a fairly low ceiling for EV sales in the US in the near future, perhaps doubling from last-year's 8%.
With so much free energy available from cheap solar, buying an EV in Aus is a no-brainer.
its not free. solar panels aren't free. also most people are at work in their cars during the day.
@@caljeff2427There are also such things as off peak electricty tariffs. In the UK, to travel 10,000 miles costs me less than £220.
@@crm114.Australia isn’t in the UK!
With sky high insurance, repairs, bad resale and stigma you would have to have no brain to buy one…😂
Solar panels are free after they are paid off. They are guaranteed for 25 years, and pay for themselves in about 5 yrs. So free for about 20yrs at least.
I also have met people who think electric cars are a scam
Well combustion engine used to be a scam for a period, I mean who in the right mind thinks horse is worst than consuming oil
That's why Australia has such a high suicide rate. 30 % new cars are electric in Australia? Just not as yet, the latest Car Sales in Australia is Tesla and MG 4 EV are among the top 20 sales in 2023 but to up it to 30%, this will take 50 years??
Hi Sam,
Thank you.
Australians historically have always embraced new technologies, computers, laptops, sound systems, solar, we love the stuff.
Therefore, EVs will be no different. Australians talk over the fence to each other, if a product is crap, they will tell you, even if its embarrassing that they own one.
Rising petrol prices, are not enough yet to change their minds, the real reluctance for most, is price, range, easy access to charging stations and slow charging.
For some, it's not a problem, but most will wait to see these EV issues improve first.
Having said that, as you say in 12 months, a lot of these drawbacks will look a lot better in favour of EV.
Great posts
I agree Sam
But the battery is changing rapidly
Buying an ev today is awesome but what is putting me off is tomorrow battery tech in evs is way better evs are booming definitely
exactly. just get a hybrid and enjoy solid resale value
Actually, it is more like battery technology is not changing at all. It is all just a lot of hot air and false hopes and promises. So much noise about "new miracle battery technology" almost every week - and then NOTHING ever really materializes. So many new EVs coming out now but range and battery energy density pretty mush stays the same. And If you hear about a new EV with big range, upon checking it always means they just stuck a lot bigger ( and heavier) battery into it.
@@user-hz3eu5in Just look at the facelifted Taycan, 50% increase in range and 30% increase in charge. Immediately dropped the reasle value of the pre face lift model. And it will get worse once solid-state arrives as that will enable lithium metal anodes and push energy density up 50%. Yes those are still some year away, but we are going to see next generation car with big efficiency and packaging improvement driving range increase and then the solid state batteries driving range improvements
Here in NZ ICE on the state highways are mostly driving at 90~95kmh these days due to, I assume the price of fuel, it is hurting at $3 a litre. In my Leaf, still doing 100kmh cause I am paying 20cents "a litre", LOL. Cant wait for the "model2".
got your RUC yet? I haven't 😅
Model has been killed by Tesla
I just see the resale value / batter degradation scaring people off.
in canada cheepest ev 55k next use gas car ware are the budget friendly ev s?
A recent Gallup poll in the US showed half of people would not even consider buying an EV, one-third might consider an EV in the future, and one-sixth either owned or seriously considering an EV. So there seems to be a fairly low ceiling for EV sales in the US in the near future, perhaps doubling from last-year's 8%.
Australia imports nearly all of it's crude oil. Replacing imported oil with domestically produced solar electric is good for the Australian economy and air.
Until you have to replace a $25K Battery, find its cheaper to SCRAP the EV and having all those dead vehicles to deal with environmentally.
That’s a Yes from New Zealand! Unfortunately new government abolished the EV rebate and uptake is down.
Great news
Entry level EVs are still too expensive in Australia. I'm considering importing a 2020 or later used Nissan Sakura EV from Japan for under $25K AUD. That's the most I'm willing to pay.
You will be sorry spare parts are difficult to obtain. My friend's car was off the road for almost 3 months waiting for a part.
Ford sold 10,000 vehicles in its EV Model e unit in the first three months of the year, losing $1.3 billion on the line altogether, equating to a loss of $130,000 per vehicle sold
So 70% would like to buy an ICE then.
Another factor for the increase in EVs and hybrids especially in the suburbs is the increasing congestion in our cities caused by population increasing. Sitting in a hybrid or EV in traffic with the engine off is strangely relaxing. You're not burning any petrol and you could be sitting ar home in your garage. Whereas sitting there with the engine idling seems a lot more stressful.
Ever heard of stop-start tech.
I will not buy another ICE car. I won't be buying a new EV either. Hoping the second hand market becomes more affordable, like in NZ.
IN the U.S. In Jan. 2023 Tesla had 5.03% of all auto sales. In Dec.2023. the had 4.21% that's a 16 percent drop.
After the war until '53 Studebaker had a larger U.S. market share than Tesla does now. Studebaker sold electric cars until 1912
@@timothykeith1367 A friend of mine owned a 53, and he was running it in the 1970s. It was stolen from him, and he traced it to a housing project in Bridgeport Ct. named Father Panik Village. It had a dead battery. He went to the police station for help and they told him "you're on your own." He went to Sears, bought a battery took a bus back walked through the village and put it in the car and and drove off with it. It later caught fire from a bad electrical connection.

I guess the reports that the RBA is likely to increase interest rates during 2024 will have no bearing on this and everyone will have plenty of spare cash to splash out on new cars no matter if BEV Hybrid or ICE...
You can get a BYD ATTO here in Queensland, after all the rebates, for around $30,000. I bought one for $42,000 a month ago. Love it. Best car I have ever owned or driven. Actually prefer it to the Tesla 3 which my son has.
My next car will be an EV. However, it needs to offer V2G & V2H. There are approx. a dozen new EVs in China I'd be delighted to take for a test drive before buying one. Unfortunately they're not on offer here in Australia yet. We're told there's a glut building up in China; so why don't they export them?
Maybe if we were left hand drive they would be sending more here. I too am very interested in the Chinese EVs over there.
Love to power my next car (an electric) with my solar system. Would like a V2H (bi-directional) charger for which there are no regulations and very few for sale. Currently waiting for the Model 2 (Redwood) to be released here in AU. By then a V2H charger might be available as well. Cheers.
You really need a battery with solar to charge your EV.
Why do you say that? You can charge during the day off solar.
@@asajelfs8170 Some people have jobs during the day. That's when you perform work for someone and they pay you money. Government can only give you money when they take it from someone else, or print it (causing inflation).
Seems good. The only thing is that they did a presser about the study, but they did not publish the study itself.
In my LGA EVs there are over 2400 EVs registered, every time i drive i see another EV.. Free sunshine from solar panels.
My next car will be an EV but for now I have a micro solar power system for our apartment and bicycles to get around locally. I'm waiting for the next generation Teslas with power share capability. Having 5-10 Powerwalls in your car makes sense to be able to use it for emergencies or camping.
It will grow cheers mate
Still rebates in WA.
Australia produces 500g CO2/kWh.... Hardly environmentally friendly when you charge using public electricity.
Is it true that they call Australia stupid island?
NO
NO! You sound a bit that way though.
Who is the 'THEY' that call Australia stupid? MAGA supporters that are pissed off that they cant get support from Australians?
Aust is little different to the US and Europe in that respect of EVs. Most residents live around large cities, well suited to EVs. Consider 2023 EV sales it on a per capita basis relative to population, in order to ascertain market penetration relative to ICE vehicles. China has a population of 1.4 billion, the EU around 750 million and the US around 333 million. On a per capita basis in terms of EV purchases in 2023, the US had ( 1 in 277 persons ) being a similar market penetration to China ( 1 in 274 persons ) who purchased an EV in 2023. Europe is lagging behind at 1 in 375 persons purchased an EV in 2023. It's not that surprising that Europe lags behind really, because Tesla dominates US EV sales and has done so for years and has a more mature EV market, given Tesla originated in the US. Looking at the data this way suggests that the culture and appetite for EVs in 2023 in the USA was almost just as strong as in China. The difference between the US and China in this per capita context is insignificant. This might suggest that among other actions, Europe needs to improve EV super charging infrastructure at a greater pace, in order to drive higher per capita market penetration of EVs.
Quite a lot of EU citizens with a monthly income of 600-800 euro/ dollar per month can only dream of an EV! These people buy 20 years old cars from Germany in the first place. About five years ago when I visited Poland, I asked some interesting people (police officer and high school teachers what they earn monthly). Then Poland isn't the poorest country in so-called eastern Europe.
We have to see the realities.
In Australia it would be about 1 in 300.
The model Y is the third best seller in March & the only EV in the top 10. No1 was Ford Ranget, No2 Toyota RAV4 No4 was Toyota HiLux. Tesla is in 6th place for most cars sold, which is a pretty solid result bearing in mind its top selling car is subject to government incentives in some states.
Great to see Oz catching up with other countries.
im not sure why you keep mentioning upfront cost is not a factor, even your quoted model y at 60k is double what a family could get something like a new Yaris at 30k for. i recently got a new kia picanto at 23k for a small runabout. there is nothing like it in its class that is electric in australia. if something like the BYD seagull was available at the same price point i would have got that. prices need to almost half and whole new classes of EVs need to become available for all the people like me in the survey who would like to buy an ev but cant justify the cost or have access to the type of vehicle they want.. yet..
Hi Viking should you go to Beijing auto show? have look. so many new EV.
Surely 30% of Australians aren't that ignorant to want an ev, there's not enough charging infrastructure and more so ev's quality and range are way below standard.
So 50% of electric car owners want to buy an electric car? Sam who doesn’t own an EV must have been a bit tipsy with this video 😂
The Electric Viking, You're the best! I subscribed because I love your content!

haha one of the few Aussie you tubers with his head screwed on.
Meanwhile, the EV bubble is bursting big time in U.S.
the whole bubble is bursting in the US.
Are Chinese manufacturers allowed to sell a lot of cars in Australia? Some of their models are pretty impressive...
Good things don’t need incentives mate.. lol
You beauty bro,love your content.
Plugin Hybrid is a better solution not to be purely tied to Electricity and lacking grid … if only they were even more affordable
You hVe ti take into account that EV incentives attract Aussies because they love something for nothing. All the more wealthy people are taking the incentives while they can.
Sam you wonder why more than 50% don't plan to buy an ev. 30%of Aussies can't charge at home. We need government to install affordable kerbside ac chargers in every community over the country. Then you get majority uptake.
There is a EV price war on with tonnes of new models coming. The future is so bright your going to need shades
Biggest bulls##t I have heard from you.
Solar roof power yes, EV no.
I live in Moreton Bay , a middle class part of Brisbane, I've been watching you for ages, been asking everyone I meet if they wanted one, not one person.
Been watching out for them for many months.
Seen 1 Tesla 1 Kia.
The Ampol near me has chargers, never seen an EV being charged yet.
I feel many are confused by the ICE properganda and challenge the truth, insisting fully electric cars are slow to charge with little range with did batteries. All don't accept Sweden and China has over 50%, with Norway close to 100%, many countries at the 20%, the tipping point for domination to begin. Thankyou Aussie.

This is a tiny survey 2000 over 26Million, I don’t believe it most people I know do not want an EV, looking at life cycle emissions of an EVs they are not even that good for the environment, maybe after 80000kms of driving. Then financially EVs deprecate 42percent after two years that buys you a lot of fuel. Also look at what Australians mostly buy Utes and SUVs, and what Australians do with those cars and again Australians will not be buying EVs any time soon, our EV market will start to fade as it has done overseas soon.
😎
Same in the UK no rebate
I’ve wanted a Tesla for 6 years. Still haven’t made the jump. Just too much of a hole to get in right now, though I am obsessed with the brand. Have a CT order. If that comes, the decisions is we’re getting it NO MATTER WHAT. Otherwise, model 3 or y between now and then maybe…..
Keep dreaming.
Anyone who drives real miles per year realizes the benefit of owning an EV, it's those who barely drive claim EVs are bad and cost more, do the math, EVs are the most efficient way to drive per mile of any different type of transportation fueling methods
Title says 30% of Australians want to buy an electric car then he says in a survey of 2000 Aussie's 50% want to buy an EV within 5 years. Sounds like BS, the majority of people don't have that kind of money and would obviously direct their resources toward housing than technology not suited to Australia. All the people who love their 4WD or utes won't be interested in a ute for $250,000. I'm with the tradie and EV's will hopefully fail just like in the US.
Sam, I think people in Australia (at least 80 %) will buy EVs in a very short period of time. When people realise the real cost of owning cars, any car, many think they can use the money for other things that is more interesting which can be anything. Most people have limited budgets, and now they realise that they have some money for other things too. People learn from friends, colleagues and relatives, and from internet... But changes takes some time that's why you use the word tipping point.
When there are enough EVs there will be enough charging stations.
I think one of the biggest charging provider in Finland is the state owned oil company Neste! The thing in Finland is that most of the gasoline stations have had cafeterias or small lunch restaurants. At least you can take a cup of coffee and relax while charging your EV.
I think in Norway people have noticed that they can do some work, while charging. Does it play a part if you do your work while at home or while you sit in your car?
HI and statistics are a great thing 70% don't want one because they are throw away car great if you live in a major city anywhere else not practical
Trolling rubbish
🤣😆
I farted
Imagine being a tradie and having to tow daily and then find out to convert to EV you will have to unhitch to charge, dealbreaker?
Pull through chargers
Why would you unhitch? You come home, you park your ute in your driveway and you plug it in. 😂 Sounds simple enough, even for a tradie
@@Driver6M I don’t know maybe your range has been reduced by say half and you’re travelling all over the countryside all day everyday such as in Australia .
Look beyond the sticker price when comparing ICE to EV. I’ve owned my EV for 2 years and apart from rego/insurance it’s cost me nothing to run. Zero maintenance and it gets fuelled from my solar panels. That makes it $4,000 p.a cheaper than my last ICE - a Mazda CX-5. Rego and insurance were about the same on the Mazda. 30% of Aussies are smart enough to figure this out 🤔
So I just bought a new car and it was a nice little Hyundai Venue. It cost me $30,000 as it was what I can afford as I have to look at the price unlike smug EV owners like yourself. EV owners keep saying how good they are but never actually come out and tell everyone how much higher the insurance is and how much it costs to get their free electricity and how much it is to use the fast charges and how long it takes to charge and how often they have to charge.
@@dikkybee4003 The Venue is a great little car! As is the Kona that I owned some years ago. If you can’t afford an EV then that’s a great choice. My comment was aimed at those people who can afford an EV but don’t see the value in owning one. The higher sticker price puts them off but they don’t allow for the lower cost of ownership over time. Insurance on my EV is $820 pa, the same as I paid for my Mazda CX-5. Answers to your other questions are all available if you Google EV running costs.
EVs work out well for wealthier people who can afford:
1. Their own home
2. With private garage and charger
3. The purchase cost of an EV (typically subsidized by taxes from working people)
4. The purchase of a solar power system (typically subsidized by taxes from working people)
I suppose here in europe EVs increase rates slow down little the next 2 years due to bad politics and missleading information. Australia will overtake, as people will recognize the advantages. The EV mature markets like China and others will force europe later to go all in electric. This transition will then be very expensive because they hold up investments now
Om
If exhaust pipes by law had to be almost near silent when a gas engine is running and revving would this destroy this great illusion of power that gas-heads have about their cars. Would this change their mind about EVs? Should this happen I could drive through a tunnel in peace and not have my favourite music ruined by a look at me, look at me, show-offs.
Put me in those 30% that want their next car electric.
You Aussie have it REAL GOOD!!

Hertz USA are in the process of dumping 10k Teslas they purchased in 2021. Presume the car hires in Oz are keeping their EVs as they are so popular down under ?
How many of the EVs were manufactured in Australia? Zero? Not a good trend.
Australia does not have a car industry after Ford closed its factory doors
WoW they've actually realised they can run their car on free fuel 😮 the penny dropped 😂😂😂😂🌞😉😊🤑😉😊🌞😉👍
I thought you were going to stop posting videos if Tesla fired 14,000 workers. What happened, little fella?
Hertz are getting rid of another 10000 EVs and replacing them with ICE vehicles
After it cost them $159,000,000.
Hello mate
Hertz are dumping EV's for ICE vehicles. EV's are finished.
Due to resale value..! Do some research.. 🙄
He doesn't report on hertz much anymore does he🤣
No you're trolling is finished
With EVs the dirty secret is INSURANCE. If you compare insurance between similarly priced ICE car and EV car - most of the time you will find that insurance is at least 50% more for the EV (with all other parameters being the same, location, driver age, history etc). Which for most people eliminates any savings made on fuel. THAT is what the EV car makers AND global governments must urgently look into, what the hell is going on with car insurance on EVs.
I hope his predictions about EV demand isn't as ridiculous, wild, and never going to happen, and as his predictions about Toyota, Ford, GM, and VW having their Kodak moment, all the legacy auto manufacturers are thriving and highly profitable while Tesla sales and profits are in a spiral of decline.
No doubt evs are the future Ice is finished but ev tech is evolving rapidly so today evs re sale value ?
EV sales will run out of charge, wait until the electricity grid goes down, oh what will you do!! ICE cars all day long.
