    Alaska I love you for standing back, listening, and stepping in the discussion to speak out about the real problem which is that women due to being women have to face these everyday annoyances. Also, thank you Jinkx for speaking about socratic discourse. Great vocab word! In addition, thank you Jinkx, Alaska, Jackie, and Courtney for providing your input about homophobic experiences. I just love seeing the other side of all of you guys. SENDING YOU ALL THE BEST WISHES THIS CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEARS! MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT TO YOU FOUR!

    In ways this cements Alaska as my favourite Queen, Jinkx just seems to like the sound of her own voice, but Alaska is very quiet and whenever she does speak, it's sensible. I'm quite impressed with how she managed to bite her tongue when there were things being said that she didnt seem to agree with.

    Jackie, I absolutely adore your work - but the advice to 'just smile' comes across as condescending and doesn't address the problem of street harassment. (I'm glad you changed your perspective later, I appreciate you being open to a dialogue.) Whatever the problems there were with the video, I deal with this all of the time in downtown Seattle. Smiling at people who give genuine compliments is one thing, but those are few and far between. It often just encourages guys to heckle even more, and I've definitely had situations arise to physical contact when they thought I wasn't actively spurning their advances... anyways, I still love you and the show. Keep on being fabulous!

      True, I feel that the male gaze that women are harassed with is a source of jealously towards gay men because the male gaze we get is usually seen in the second video and can be scary. I felt that way as well, but changed viewpoints after some research into it. I thought it was amazing how quickly she changed her opinion once a new viewpoint was introduced!

  • @CandySphynx

    Well, first of all, for the nice thing: I love Alaska so, so much. She is always so sweet and kind and clever and her personality shines through. Her positive attitude is so helpful to me, as silly as it might sound.
    Secondly, I really want to thank you, Courtney, for this video. It's exactly what I needed right now. I'm a cis bi woman with pink hair, and a taste for sweet and extravagant fashion, that I tone down A LOT because of the place where I live (south of France, Nice).
    People here are very agressive, close-minded and street harassment is common, whether because you're a woman and guys hit on you in gross ways or because you're gay, or because your fashion is different.
    Saturday night I was grocery shopping with friends after an anime con, still dressed in sweet lolita, and three girls came to us and started harassing us, taking pictures and insulting us. They got escorted out of the store by the security guys (that were awesome and super helpful) after they kicked one of my friends.
    I was so, so, so mad. I was shaking with rage, but on the ride back home, Jinxx's motto came to me: water off a duck's back. And it did appease me. It's not me they have a problem with, or my friends for protecting me, but with themselves. You would have to be so sad, so angry at your own life to be that hateful. Like, if you act like that, your life must be a lot worse than mine, and I really don't have the heart to hate you if you're in such a position.
    All that you said in this video, and the brilliant "do you feel better now" soothed me so much, and provided me with new ways to deal with hateful people. I'm sad we all have to deal with such bullshit, but I'm really happy to see people all over the world trying to improve the situation, and being so eloquent about it.
    I felt so sad when Alaska said groups of men were scary too, though. I wish no one had to feel like that; had to feel threatened and helpless.

    • @CandySphynx
      @CandySphynx 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also I loved the bit on the typing down the negative things you want to say to get it out of your system and deleting it. Of course we all have things we don't approve of, or just dislike, and I think dealing with them this way is healthy and more clever than trying to hurt people. I always say: putting others down will never lift you up.

    I love how this video showcases how someone can be just as impactful on a conversation by sitting back, listening & observing before talking. • @queerbunny121

    I really appreciated Alaska turning the conversation around. Being a woman, or a female-bodied person in the world remains a truly exhausting task. Lots of small things that invade our space can add up and be a huge burden.
    I also disagree with Jackie’s comment about having a bad day and seeing someone worse off than her snapped her out of it. Everything is relative, and if something is a bad day for you, you are perfectly entitled to feel pissed and upset by it. Your feelings are valid. It’s that attitude that causes many people, particularly those with mental health issues, to downplay their struggles and feel like they’re not allowed to acknowledge them because someone always has it worse, or feel guilty for struggling when their lives objectively ‘aren’t that bad’. It’s okay to not feel grateful at times. It’s okay to have shitty days. We don’t have to be happy or enlightened all the time.

    5 things that i am thankful for that was displayed in this video:
    1. A great intellectual discussion of what is wrong with how people feel the need to yell out rude comments to both a young woman and a "homosexual" male in New York City.
    2. Alaska's intelligent and insightful responses to the videos!!
    3. Jackie beats advice on how to respond to people harassing you verbally
    4. Jinkx being MAGICAL :)
    5. For all you being such inspirational and smart people and shedding light on an important issue

    Alaska doesn't say much but when she does talk, smart things come out. I really think she is a smart cookie. At first they seemed to be missing the point of the video but then Alaska put things in perspective and brought the girls around to some clearer thinking.

      Torontopia It seems like Alaska, unlike Jinx, may actually think before she speaks so that what comes out of her mouth isn't mostly nonsense. Or maybe Alaska is just really smart so she doesn't always have to think a lot before she speaks - she can "think on her feet".

    I really enjoyed this video. It's my favourite of the Courtney Talks series so far. The mix of queens was fantastic, because there was a spectrum of ages, experiences and opinions which added depth to the discussion.
    Alaska's comments really steered things into the right territory, and I'm so glad Jackie changed her mind after a bit more thought/discourse. As a woman, if you smile at a man who's called you beautiful it can be interpreted as an invitation for more unwanted attention.
    Speaking as a woman, I think the reason the video emphasized how the woman was dressed was to show that even when dressed demurely women have to deal with other people's opinions of them. I wish there was a video of the same girl dressed up, for example in the dress Courtney wore, and how much worse the comments and interactions would have been. I think this is the reason why straight women enjoy going to gay clubs. It's a venue where we can dress to please ourselves without having to deal with the threat of unwanted drunken straight male harassment.
    As far as the format goes, I enjoyed the long conversation. It would annoy me if I had to watch this in chunks and repeat the intro over and over. It's the internet, so we can always pause or skip ahead if we want to.
    I'm really looking forward to seeing Willam here. I love watching Courtney Act and Willam play off each other.

    • @collyblom
      @collyblom 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've just realised that this sounds as though I'm blaming straight men. Of course it's more complicated than that. A guy is just as a much a victim of heteronormative policing as a woman is. They're under pressure to get girls, be masc etc.

    This really resonated with me. As a woman it can be very uncomfortable walking down the street and having men follow you or shout comments and I do have those moments where I think I'm going to be attacked. Making an aggressive and/or sexually harrassing statement to a stranger who is trying to go about their day to day business and expecting them to respond positively is at best naive and at worst scary as hell.
    I would love if the gentlemen that did that kind of thing watched this and maybe thought twice before harrassing someone in the street (the same goes for those who make homophobic comments)
    On another note, I looove Alaska and her comments in this video made me love her even more. Looking forward to more of the same!

  • @LegalVampire
    @LegalVampire 9 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    The things these guys don't understand (because they're men), is that women are scared of men when walking down streets. 1 in 6 women get raped and if you were to smile back at a guy for saying something invasive and scary that he thinks is a compliment, that may be taken by him as leading him on rather than just being 'nice'.
    I've had guys call sexual things out at me on the street since I was 12 YEARS OLD, and what guys don't seem to understand is: it's SCARY. You don't know what those men's intentions are! If a stranger calls out to you with a sexual remark on the street, why would anyone see that as harmless? Why does the guy even shout it? Because he's obviously not trying to make a new friend. It's harassment that no woman asks for, and people have got to understand that there's enough cases of rape and violence of men against women in this world for women to be scared straight when a random man decides to take interest in you on a street, of all places.
    You guys don't have a right to an opinion on the sexual harassment of women because you don't understand what it's like to be a woman.

    • @Symposeum
      @Symposeum 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Drew Kingsbury It's not our job to be grateful to a bunch of guys for discussing something that largely won't endanger men. (Street harassment of people in drag is a separate issue.) I agreed with what Alaska said, she seemed to have the best understanding, but Jackie saying the woman should smile back and Courtney saying she'd personally be a bit flattered just showed they can't really grasp how dangerous street harassment makes daily life feel to women.

    • @dkingsbury

      But the fact of the matter is, if you had seen the whole video, you would see that they had changed their minds and agreed that men shouldn't be able to claim a woman's space in such a way. I'm sorry this video isn't a circlejerk echo chamber that you're used to and you actually had to witness real discourse and people actually changing their minds. Novel concept, I know.

      Drew Kingsbury What's your point, aside from being arrogant and self satisfied? You talk about discourse but when the people actually affected by the harassment tell you what they think you shut them down?

    Greatful for Alaska's comments - I was listening and thinking. Hmmmm maybe when men harass me first thing in the morning on my way to work I should just smile and be polite and responsive? NO! I'm dressed for work and being told to smile and called princess by the builders. It's belittling and rude and annoying. I don't care about how they see me and they do it to try to get a reaction and sort of make me (and other women ) a joke and a commodity. YES ALASKA!

    lol i cant believe im writing this. but i was in a pretty shitty rut, and was just feeling sorry for myself wasnt living life was letting it pass by. and then i found the AAA girls video, and saw the behind the scenes link thru willams channel, and just seeing how you (courtney) alaska and willam do what you do thru any hate that comes your way really kind of moved me to stop feeling sorry for myself and just start doing things, and feeling better about myself. and i really want to say thanks to you three for helping me get out of the shitty situation i was in. you guys are my newest, and by far favorite role models, keep doing what you're doing, inspire more youth to get out of their shell, and if they arent, inspire them to become a functional human being.
    Thanks Courtney you're amazing!

      ***** Don't come for me. I'm genuinely saying I love her hair. Your assumption that my comment is sarcastic would lead me to assume you're viewing her decision to style her hair in unique way through a negative lens, thus accusing me of being ingenue about my appreciation for an avant-garde artist, who I have happened to meet and express my appreciation for face to face. Please take a second to think logically before you try to call out someone online. This is exactly what they were talking about in the video. You decided to go through the comments and accuse someone you don't know of being something they're not from the safety of your computer. I am sharing positivity and you're trying to shut me down on a false assumption. In your failed attempt to "do the right thing" you've done just the opposite and it's a shame.

    The point is that women feel scared walking at night because we dont know if these things can escalate into something else and we wouldn't be able to defend ourselves. During the day it's no problem mostly, it's only annoying cuz sometimes we just want to walk without having tj l to acknowledge every guy who talks to us

    I love each individual on this video. I have watched this multiple times and each time I take something new and remember it. The most important thing I think was the change of thought from Jackie after the video of the girl. That shows real human consciousness and not the perfect TH-cam editing that we often see today. Thank you x

    I do love the longer version, it feels more complete. I also LOVED hearing what Jackie and Alaska said. I never think about compassionate those queens are because they make us laugh so often, but they're actually very sweet, thoughtful individuals.
