So interesting fact about the name of this book and the inspiration for the Joker: He was based off the main character of Victor Hugo's novel "The Man Who Laughed." Specifically he was inspired from the silent film adaptation of the novel

Must be hard to have to live with that everyday. Batman had the chance to end it all if he has just let go him to fall. But once a hero.........wow this comic really gets you doesn't it

And then what? Kill Two-Face? Croc? Ivy? What about drug dealers? And muggers? Why not pick pocketers? In fact, why not kill all corrupt politicians? They certainly have more deaths on their backs than any supercriminals. And what about all those generals with stars on their shoulders? Or the president?
And what would happen if Batman unknowingly killed an inocent (there are many ways to make a killing vigilante do so)? Or an undercover cop? Would that be justifiable through any means?
You have to remember, Batman is not there to replace the forces of order rather than aiding them, he can't name himself judge, jury and executioner.
Arturo Casab I clearly never said he "should" of killed him....I said it must have been hard especially after all the adventure they've had over the years that he probably thinks back to that night where he could of ended it all but he couldn't because of its the right thing to let him live. And by the way you cannot compare Two face, Penguin, and random thugs to someone like the Joker. So sparing the joker must be even harder than sparing anyone else because of all the horrible things he has done....

I'd love to see Ben Affleck adopt elements of this story in his solo Batman movie, perhaps in the form of flashbacks.
David Ayer and Jared Leto keep saying in interviews things that throw back to these comics and Batman v Superman we saw Jason Todd's old Robin suit so it wouldn't be too surprising if they either turn some of these stories into live action or at least heavily mention them in the movie canons.

As far as I read, there were 2 psycho pirates, one died before the Crisis in Infinite Earths but the second one was the one that helped the antimonitor (more like was obligated) to destroy the multiverse. After they defeated the Antimonitor and there was only one universe he was the only one who could remember the multiverse until Infinite Crisis where Black Adam killed him. He can manipulate feelings in people and make them happy or scared or nervous as much as he wants to when he puts his mask. Hope it helps
He was a criminal from Earth-2 who found a group of artifacts called the Medusa Masks, which gave the wearer the ability to project emotions onto others. He fused the masks into one mask and used its powers to fight the Justice Society. During the Crisis on Infinite Earths, the Monitor recruited him to help defeat the Anti-Monitor, but the Anti-Monitor promised him his own Earth in exchange for helping him, so the Pirate joined him, manipulating Barry Allen and Earths 4, S, and X, but the strain of doing so seemingly removed his powers. As one of the few heroes and villains with full memories of the Crisis, he went insane and was committed to an asylum. He was later seen in Arkham Asylum, using his powers to bring back characters who were killed in the Crisis as he had realized he was a comic book character, before Animal Man intervened, causing the Pirate to happily fade away. After that he randomly came back to life, got his powers enhanced by Neron, then teamed up with Alexander Luthor Jr. during the Infinite Crisis, trying to control Power Girl's mind before being killed by Black Adam shoving his fingers through his eyes.

No, Batman, you didn't create the monster, The Joker just tripped over his own cape and fell into the chemicals, so he created himself
The Joker voice needed work, but the sequence where you narrate Bruce dosing himself is just chilling. I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't mention how Batman was thinking things like, "Alfred...all his fault...I'll kill him..." That's what pieced it together for Bruce. Despite the smile and laughter, the toxin was filling him with an overwhelming hate and need for violence.
Also didn't mention how this story tells of the first time he used the Batmobile.

The name of this comic comes from an old black and white horror film that inspired the Joker character.
This has to be one of my new favorite batman stories second to the killing joke and the court and night of the owls
You should do the Batman/Green Lantern "Made of Wood" team-up story that's included with the reprints of this comic.
That is a pretty good story. The final page with Bruce smiling warmly at the old photo Alan Scott left him is touching.
The mention of flash appearing in keystone is wrong, the flash mentioned was most likely Barry Allen and Barry Allen's city was central city not keystone

I've been waiting for you to do this story for years! I haven't actually read this, but I have read the Joker's original appearance and I wanted to know how much was it was still in-continuity to Post-Crisis. I'm glad the New 52/Zero Year didn't change their "first" meeting.
