I find it funny that he evaded the neglect & abandonment topic because though he says it’s not his reality, half of the mix people I know in Nigeria are not close with the foreign parent. It’s a big issue.
I think class structure informed his beating around the bush he didn’t want to seem as if himself or anyone in proximity to him is an illegitimate child. He can’t see past his privilege and that’s okay.
