Hey Gang!
Today, we’re tackling an issue with job site safety. The city doesn’t believe that we have our site fenced off properly, and they’re concerned about the safety of the neighbors. We don’t want any enemies in the new town, so we’re happy to oblige. Another good looking temporary solution for the Stud Pack site!
As we stated at the end of the video, we are working super hard to handle all of the things we need so we can get to building properly. So many decisions we were forced to make that we were not prepared for! Now we know for the future.

Hey Jordan, have you thought about setting two lawn chairs infront of the StudPack house for when you do the explanation segments like the last five minutes? I found the discussion a bit awkward just looking at your Dad while you are having a conversation. We want to see both of you guys. It would also be cool because you could see the progress behind you guys as you teach us about some off camera obstacle or something that doesn’t have the “how to”.
This is quite the endeavor and inspiring. No worries on the wait. We know you’ll get there and we’ll be here waiting.
Maybe a visit from Matt or crossover episodes? That would neato.

I've been wanting to chime in with this for a long time - Mr. Paul, you've set such a great example of fatherhood for the men of my generation. I'm 26 and I don't know when I'll be starting a family, but when I see your relationship with Jordan I know what kind of father I want to be. Lots of folks have said similar things but I wanted to share my perspective as a young adult. Great stuff as always, looking forward to seeing the rest of the project. Cheers from Atlanta

Great to see a new video from you guys. After hearing the detail level of the requirements to get the permits, I hope you've already begun the process of ordering some of the bigger specific items that have been detailed such as doors, windows and some of the other stuff that isn't going to be just off the shelf. Supply chain issues are still a big deal, and could set you back on making progress once you get that concrete poured.
GREAT point. Storage might be a problem, but I know I’d rather have that problem than a “Whaddya mean 6 months to get it!” problem.

You guys do great work. I work at my Grandmother’s when I can to help her out and keep her house intact and these videos have helped me with every project I’ve done pretty much. I’ve been doing electrical for several years but even things I didn’t learn in trade school I’ve learned from you guys. Keep it up
They didn't need a cop for that. Talk about overkill. Next they'll be inspecting your choice of coffee. They probably have an ordinance for that too! And as far as TH-cam "experts", they mostly have a yack full of advice, a handful of gimme, and a mouth full of much obliged. Good luck guys.

Texas isn't all people think it's cracked up to be. People expect you do your thing and people will leave you alone, but the reality is if you have a Karen around you'll get Code up your A55 for everything you do.

I just did my HVAC last year. I went with the guys who did the actual load calculations. All but one company just eyeballed it. The company that did the proper calculations wanted all the information on my house that you mentioned. I had just done windows and doors and air sealing and that all went into it. By doing the proper calculations with the proper data, I was able to save money by downsizing the system with all my other upgrades. I was nervous about it but they showed me all the math and it made sense. Been in 6-8 months and so far, so good.

To those viewers that are whining about the Code Enforcement Officers...as a retired County Inspector, I can tell you that this project would have been shut down in any county I ever worked in. No silt fence, no stormwater management features, no site safety protection (which they have now corrected). No sediment controls either.
I'm not saying these things to criticize the guys, they're doing a great job...but I would hate to see them having to do unnecessary remediation and repairs, or much worse, face a costly lawsuit down the line.
Yep. I cringed when I saw them a few vids back draining their pit water into the sewer.
The end result is to keep accidents from happening . Construction accidents are usually bad and we all pay for it with rising insurance rates. Where I'm from this build would require an 8' tall plywood fence all the way around the property line .

Paul, I'm rather impressed Halo asked you to represent them in the show in Vegas! You once mentioned that you took Mike Holt's courses, which tells me you are in an elite class of general contractors in regard to your electrical knowledge and expertise. Stay encouraged - it's a long haul but there are literally tens of thousands here cheering you, Jordan, and Rad on.
I love watching the two of you work. It reminds me of when I did stuff with my own dad. Every time we finished a step, we'd say "it's almost like we know what we're doing!" I get the same energy from the two of you. RIP, Dad!
I am in the process of building my own home right now as well. One thing I have found is that everything costs more than the original estimates, and everything takes longer than you think it will.
Great videos! I'm remembering all of the pain you're going through because I went through it myself. It's a HUGE learning curve.
I've got mad respect for you guys filming all of this while you are building. It's hard enough building the house without spending all that time planning filming and editing. I tried to video some things, but it is really hard to think about the filming aspect as well as the building aspect. The most I can manage is some pictures at the end of the day. RESPECT!

When I was like 10 years old, a development of like two dozen houses were built at the end of my neighborhood. I used to ride my bike over and watch them frame, or roof, or whatever was happening that day. (This is probably why I love watching you guys work, and many other channels and shows too.)
I’m remembering this today because one morning, there were no crews around, but there was a great big hole excavated for a septic tank or who knows what. It was all sand and I thought it would be fun to jump in. I was right, it was great! But it was damn near impossible to get out. Literally I was in over my head. I eventually found the best spot to run up the sides, grab a tree root, and escape. So, long story short, I’m glad you got that fence closed in.
Yep, my son did a similar thing back in the day when you could just wander in and out of a job site. He jumped in after the concrete forms were pulled from the basement wall and slit his leg open on a cleat.
Because curious kids would never jump a fence.

The human eye is actually surprisingly accurate a lot of the time in terms of things like your hinge plumbness and telling if something is straight or curved 😄

Not only do you have to spec out everything right away but also make sure you put that stuff on order right away. The last thing you want is to order a window or door and find out that is on back order for months. That would really set you back. We are still waiting on a massive electrical panel for an industrial building, it has been on back order for over a year already!

Those Milwaukee double ended bits rock, i found that the Irwin double ended bits are almost as durable but they work way better when you run them through a magnetizer. They’re cheaper as well
Gotta love when they keep changing things to make it harder and harder for someone to build their own house. What does it matter what windows you choose as long as there is a window for emergencies

Not sure a viewer would know where the site is. They haven’t been specific about location. Unless it’s someone local who recognizes the site… it’s a resident.
It’s also possible the cop drove by and noticed, whatever the situation, it’s actually a fair request. I absolutely love the respect they handle these situation!!!

It's fun to see you doing a task to lower standard of perfection. People I work with always tell me I'm more detail-oriented and perfectionist, but then there are times when that all doesn't matter and it's fun to just throw things together quickly.

Enjoy immensely your videos and how you both work well together. Been doing home renos for 40 years but wish I was starting over based on your know-how and doing the job the way it’s supposed to be done.
Use a bit magnetizer. They also make some you can leave on the bit. Work amazing.
One thing to check out is prepping for termites. Find out about pre treating the area of the foundation & slab for termites! You will be glad you did!!!!

An enforcement letter would of been enough. Also a good idea to lock your site, once you get expensive material delived and left on site.

A letter may not have arrived in time to avoid a situation. Twenty- something years ago our city failed to secure a construction site properly, & an senior neighbor fell in & wasn’t discovered for over 4 hours. He was deceased.
Need to know if they are actually in the City of Houston or incorporated Harris county only? Houston PD does not have the man power to go out with code enforcement officers, unless there is an issue. My guess is IF this is in Houston city limits, the officer just happened to be there in his beat. County does not have the manpower also so not sure who the "police" were. They are new to this area. Houston has many LEO agencies with jurisdictional powers in the county.
@@ejcsds can't be in the city of Houston itself. They talk about getting in front of city council for permissions and plan review, city council in Houston does not do that.
I'd rather have the conversation in person and informally, than receiving an official enforcement letter. An official letter is way more adversarial than a civil conversation.
I still love my Canadian Robertson bits the most, the square design means you don't need magnets at all.

You guys are bangin it out. Home building is not for the faint of heart, but you guys are taking it in stride. I’m not a YT’er but was a home builder and now Comercial construction builder. If there’s something you guys need advice or help with, be more than happy to provide that. But you guys are doing great. Code evolution is just the mark of the beast. As building practices improve and products change, evolution speeds up.
I agree about a 5 minute sit down segment like others were recommending BTW.

I built a new house on a vacant lot in Los Angeles county four years ago. I definitely feel your pain about all the paperwork and requirements to get permits. I think we spent more time in the permit and approval process than the actual build phase 🤣
It was like a scavenger hunt going through pages of forms, tracking down all of the different agencies to get sign offs and approvals, each wanting their own reams of documentation and plans.

Hey guys congrats on the Halo gig in sin city, that’s totally awesome. Sorry to hear about the challenges thrown in your way by the code requirements, but in true stud pack fashion you guys will over come them and be much better for the experience. There’s a saying by Randy Pausch (The Last Lecture) that I carry around with me … The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to show how badly we want something.

I was the sub contractor on my house back in 2017-18. Never did anything like that, but it took me over a year to get everything laid out, and that changed as we went as well on design. My father and I also did 100% of the electric and all the finishing work after the drywall was finished. I still look back 5 years later and I'm still amazed how well everything turned out.. once we started we finished everything is 6 months which is the norm in this area. Which was tough to do while also working full time and only being able to work on the house on the evenings and weekends.
I was watching a Matt risinger demonstration at the Las Vegas HBA show. They panned the camera out toward the crowd and low and behold there was stud pack. Fun seeing you guys there. Always great content. I even enjoyed something as simple as your fence project. Probably a good idea but the a**hole could have just come over and mentioned it to you. People 😮
The nice thing about having to make all these decisions at permit time, is you don't have to make the decisions later.
Also definitely worth checking into lead time on windows, doors, garage doors, trusses, and engineered wood products. I built a house recently and I ordered the window package and trusses before I started framing. There have been some things like that which have crazy lead times post pandemic. My garage doors took 4 months to come in.
I share your pain guys, halfway through our new build the area adopted the latest building code (compared to the rest of the Country). It's a process and you have to do it....great to get that permit though. Wish I could join you in Vegas, not been for 2 years due to the world events and a trade show would be a dream. You mentioned a great example with the air conditioners. I’ve heard it’s best to have a properly sized A/C so that it runs continuously and doesn’t just cycle on and off like it would with an oversized unit.

Higher-end heat pumps use a variable speed pump so it can run almost continuously to maintain the temp better and keep humidity under control better. Expensive initial purchase but they pay off over time. But also hard to get, so plenty of lead time on the order is highly recommended.
I feel you guys. While not as complex as what you are doing, I applied for a permit for my shop. In the 3 weeks it took the city to come out and approve the location of the shop in relation to my septic system they changed from an old online system they had been using to a new one. I started on the old and had to then reapply on the new system. Then the new system didn't work so they switched back to the old so I had to do that again. In the meantime a tornado hit my area causing lots of damage and everything slowed wayyyyy down as they processed all the permits for the damage repair (which I totally understand.). A 2-3 week time frame turned into 6 weeks. If I had been creating content like you guys I don't know what I would have done. Keep up the great content, we are all pulling for you!

It has been a bit of a drag not seeing more progress being made. But I completely understand there's a lot in what goes into what you're doing, just from paying attention to what you've mentioned. So I understand. I can't wait tell yall start getting the place up, and get past the ground work. I do still think you should put that good grass all in you yard for sure. It will def raise the value compared to the other houses for sure I assume.

code enforcement doesn't drive around looking for stuff to complain about. They only answer complaints. Someone is already calling the city on you at this new property. They also lied when they made the complaint, they probably said you were violent, etc. Reason code enforcement had a cop with them.

@@JourneyBeyondSelf Doesn't matter, what AA said is true, I work with PD and CE all the time, and they do not bother people with small things like a gate open. This was a Karen request made, and probably a viewer being a POS given how his neighbors seem to be cool.

Run the bit through a magnitizer . Won't be quite as strong a field , but will hold most screws .
