    I own 3 TRCs, including the Apocalypse, as well as several Fallknivens, including the A1 VG10. I recently ordered a A1 Pro. I love the Apocalypse, and carried it on a recent 2 week off road motorcycle trip to the Rocky Mountains. It is ~40% heavier than the A1: 20 oz with sheath, vs ~14oz for the A1 w Zytel, sheaths included in weight. It was the "monsoon season" in CO, so leather sheaths would be at a disadvantage, since they can absorb water. The A1 is 1" shorter, but has more cutting edge, due to the huge finger choil on the TRC. I paid $115 more for the TRC, than the "standard" A1. I'd say the TRC wins in cool factor/looks, and the A1 wins in practicality (6 oz lighter, more compact, similar capability, more edge). Ounces make pounds. There have been A1 destruction tests since, but "All Outdoors" did a multi-part A1 destruction test ~ 7 years ago, where they did just about everything you can imagine to the A1. The A1, even in VG10, is more than tough enough for any likely survival scenario. Next time I'm riding back country trails, I'll have the A1 Pro on my belt.

    Awesome review. A1 better for extreme cold weather and the laminate steel and convex edge goes through wood like butter. Trc fit and finish is incredible and that Elmax steel holds a great edge and balance is excellent. Agree with you that that fallkniven sheaths leave something to be desired. Trc sheath is awesome. If I had to choose one it would be the Trc!

    The Fallkniven grind is so low, that is more of a scandi-vex, rather than saber-convex. TRC knives and Beckers, especially the BK7, also the Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 and the Skrama, are the way to go, for good survival knives. Bark River, make great hunting knives, like the Fox River. LT Wright is more of a camping, companion knife. Adventure Sworn and Jacklore, make some of the best Bushcraft knives. Morakniv makes the best budget bushcraft knives, great for wood carving.
    Don't forget your Victorinox SAK and or Spirt X multitool and you have the best production tools! PS Axes. Fiskars,Gransfors Bruks, Fenix... some of the best, for any budget.

    Great vid, keep up the good work! On top of the swedge of the trc apocalypse is a flat area to strike a ferro rod. It’s only a small area but it can be done easily in that spot. I got both knives except the apocalypse is the dbk edition with a convex edge instead of the standard v edge from factory. Having a convex edge on the trc makes all the difference. But either way you can not go wrong with either one, both are top tier designs. But if I had to pick, trc!!

      Oh yeahhh…..I noticed that the TRC lacked in the wood processing department and to me was more of a combat knife instead of a survival knife. So I took my $500 knife and hand ground a convex edge. Been sharpening and reprofiling for many years so I was reluctantly confident to do it. And…..it’s much better for wood processing now and in my opinion with the convex edge it’s a true dual use combat/survival knife.

    If I had a disposable income I would definitely buy the TRC they are on another level if you ask me. I find Falkniven to be way overpriced especially for the materials. Vg10. I liked some of their designs but can't justify the waste of money when plenty will do the same job for less then a1/3.
    The other thing that blows my mind is people worrying about using a ferro rod on a knife. Ferro rods were for survival in my day, they are very soft even if you used your edge you wouldn't hurt anything. I don't see designing a knife for something you never use. Plus every ferro rod has a striker.
    But I guess these are the same people pay hundreds of dollars for a knife they most likely will never use.

    • @magnuskarlsson2924
      @magnuskarlsson2924 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The steel in the Fallkniven A1-pro is Lam Cos. A cobalt steel that takes a razor sharp edge, keeps it well and is fairly easy to sharpen. It is way better than VG10.
      Besides that the TRC is okay in a mild climate. But you would never want to use it in harsh and cold winter conditions.
      Both knives have their merit. But the Elmax in the TRC is a pain to sharpen. Unless you have a belt grinder.

    • @richardhenry1969
      @richardhenry1969 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@magnuskarlsson2924 mine is more in the prices. In my experience I've got everything done and done well with 5160, and 1095. Mostly on cheap knives.
      Seems a few years ago all the very good cheap knives went way up in price. What blows my mind is they are the same materials just way more money.
      I just can't justify $200 on a knife when a$30 will do the exact same job.

    • @richardlouis4412
      @richardlouis4412 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The A1 Pro is CoS, not VG10.

    • @magnuskarlsson2924
      @magnuskarlsson2924 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardhenry1969 Well the edge retention on 5160 is rather poor. It's not comparable to Lam Cos. One thing to remember is that the Fällkniven knives are laminated. That is a complicated process that makes their knives expensive.
      I use both cheap and expensive knives. A Mora will do the same job as a more expensive hand made knife. But my favourite knives are all hand made in my favourite materials. They are just more fun to use, have better ergonomics and a good steel sure does keep an edge better.
      But each to their own. If you are pleased with cheaper knives there is no reason to pay more. I wouldn't spend money on something I don't think is worth it either. I sure don't when it comes to most things. But knives and other tools are the kind of things I actually do think is worth the extra money.

      @@magnuskarlsson2924 I personally think knives are get ridiculous for what it is. Really my favorite knives for chopping are carbon steel. But for other tasks I use folders.
      I’m a person that has worked with steel and metals my whole life. So I guess it’s hard to explain how the market has people fooled. The price of material is not what your paying for. That’s how China is stealing the market in everything.

    I'm surprised at how bad the edge stability of the A1 pro is. It took big rolls from the pipe cutting. And the thickness and scandi-vex geometry should produce a strong edge. My only explanation is that they heat treat the steel softer because it is supposed to be a survival knife.

I am planing to buy soon the white river M1 backpaker for my edc fixed blade knife and for a bigger blade my choice would be the Trc apocalypse! TRC any day of the week. Falkniven are crap . The handles are to soft. But comfortable for all the backyard adventures!

    You took two expensive tools and intentionally damaged them by batoning metal?! Glad you have the money to play with foolish tests.

      I take 2 survival blades and tested them to see if I could trust them in an situation where I need to used them more than taking pictures for Facebook. I'm glad that you can afford not to use your knife because you are scared to damage them.

      @@thecavemanknivesreview.8097 Spot on. Couldn't have said it any better. These people save up forever to get their favorite knife. Then never use it cause they don't want to damage it. If I spend $500 on a knife. You bet I'm gonna get my money worth out of it. It's gonna be a high mileage knife. If I break it. Oh well. Guess I'll have to get another.

    Hi good comparison but it is clear the Fallkniven may get more damage it is because of the V10 core
    this steel is brittle but anyway both of them are superb.

      Thank you for the comments. But the Fallkniven is Laminated COS. Is supposed to be better steel than vg10. But obviously not better than Elmax.
