    Why I wrote (not) Alone
Many who live with mental health conditions experience a profound sense of isolation. Discussing these issues and more so, identifying as someone who lives with them, has been extremely taboo in our society. Thus, many suffer in silence, facing their troubles with no support. But, as the title of the work implies, they are not alone.
I live with depression and anxiety. I have tried to use my platform to normalize discussions about mental health and to help start conversations about this issue. Here are some statistics you may or may not be aware of:
1 in 5 of adults in the US experience mental health issues each year.
1 in 6 youths in the US experience mental health issues each year.
90% of suicides worldwide are attributable to mental illness.
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in the United States.
With statistics like this, it is shocking and frustrating that so many people are reluctant to acknowledge, discuss, and address these issues.
In 2021, I was asked to create a work for wind ensemble addressing mental illness. The resultant work, “unBroken”, is one of my favorite works I have ever created, both from an aesthetic and personal perspective. However, this work is very advanced (Grade 5), which limits its demographic for performers and, thus, audiences.
Those of us that teach or have taught middle school and high school know that there is a need to address this issue at younger ages, and to make such tools available to middle schools and developing high school ensembles.
I decided to make this work a consortium, expecting there would be 20-30 schools that would support such a piece. 40 tops.
The consortium included over 300 schools.
This is an issue whose time has come. The time is now. We need to talk about this, and we are going to talk about this.
We are going to show them all that they are not alone.
    About the work
The piece starts very softly, with both beauty and dissonance. The individual is aware that something is wrong but is trying to bravely persist. A soloist introduces the main theme of the work, a bittersweet melody that is lovely and vulnerable. As the first segment continues, dissonant elements and a three note descending theme signals the onset of a mental health crisis.
The second segment is manic and violent. The individual struggles with their condition as everything seems to be in darkness. The piece builds to a thunderous moment before dying away to a cloud of confusion. Their heartbeat is heard racing and then slowing. The individual is broken.
The original theme sounds out again, unaccompanied, but others join in. The work rises to a triumphant climax, as a sense of solidarity is achieved. The work ends with the soloist again, but more confident and with others there for support.
    Major Themes
There are four major themes that are used in the work.
The first, which I call “Shirley’s Theme”, after my mother who lives with severe depression, is first heard at measure 9. This work is used throughout, both in whole and in part, so signify the individual.
The second theme, a three note descending motif, appears throughout the work. It is twisted a minor second down and minor third, and it represents the darkness inside the individual’s mind. This is the “Mental Illness Motif.”
The third theme, the “hope” motif, is the five note motif that starts the work in the piano/mallets. It represents the individual trying to find hope for happiness and a better future.
The fourth theme, the “crisis” motif, is a 12-tone row, first sounded in m.42. 12 tone music has always sound disturbing and inhuman to me, and I found this to be a great way to express mental illness and despair. The 12-tone row is built off of various iterations and inversions of the second theme (“Mental Illness Motif”).

I want to say thank you! My son band played this at his concert last night. I actually cried as it has very real meaning. I myself struggle with depression. I could feel deeply every note of this piece and it's meaning. It is something I will listen to often and remind myself in my deepest hardest times there will be a calm and peace to hold on, and not give up! It is also proof I am not alone, and someone else has experienced this. Will also remind me of what my family is going through and not to give up they are here and I need to be for them too. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! ♥️♥️♥️

Thank you, Kari. It is my strong belief that we all need to be okay talking about this; normalizing it is a great way to encourage those that need it to get help. Sending lots of love to you and your family.

I’m playing this piece as one of our concert pieces this year, and the little message at the top that says “Dedicated to those who live with mental health conditions. You are not alone.” Almost brought me to tears when I first got my part. It made me feel so seen, since our band LOVES this piece and I myself struggle with severe anxiety and very very dark depressive episodes that I’m unable to receive much help for. I genuinely cannot thank you enough for writing this piece and adding that little message. Our school was one of those with access to the video diaries/pre-production, and I know after watching those that your words were heartfelt and genuine. Thank you, so much, for this piece.

I played this in district honor band a few days before valentine's day. We did something that's been done before where, during the final flute solo, a few peope stand up and say "I am not alone." Everyone who aske to do it dit it. (There were about 7 of us who did it if I remember correctly.) I was fortunate enough to be one of them. I'm certain that this song was the main reason I didn't harm myself in some way this past valentines day. I don't typically struggle with suicidal thoughts that often,(normally, they only reverberate in my head when I'm going throu a major rough patch. Twice a year at most if I had to guess.) But I'm sure that, if it wasn't for this song, They would have appeared and I would have given in to them.
So, from the bottom of my heart,
    Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Daniel.

Last year, in my freshman year, my band played this piece to honor one of our seniors who had committed suicide. I didn't know her, but the emotions around the room almost made me cry. I was also in a really dark place, and had been planning on commitimg suicide, until this piece showed me that other people know how it feels. I cried the first time I heard this piece, because it made me feel like no matter what I was gling through, I was going to get through it. Thank you so much for letting my band be one of the bands to preview it. Thanks, from all of Gaylord Symphony Band.

We played this for my spring concert. The day we saw it was a the day after I had a breakdown the night before. I was in a dark place. I had been planning to end it for a while and the night before we first read this piece. When we first read through it I had to keep myself from crying. This is one of the most powerful pieces of music i’ve ever played. It’s something I relate to. The night of the concert, my mom actually cried. My mom doesn’t cry easily. These past few years have been hard on me and my mom. I was initially angry when I first heard this piece because someone understood. I was upset I was crying in class, I was upset that I was in that place, everything just fell apart. I’m eternally grateful that I got to be one of the first bands to perform this piece. I’m glad I got to play the music written by someone who understands. Thank you.

I'm a flautist, sophomore playing this for my spring concert in about a month. I can't tell you how emotional this piece has made me, even though I've just received it. I currently struggle with MDD and GAD. I know many of my friends and family struggle with mental health as well, and this piece represents a lot about it. I cannot wait to play it, and dedicate it to those who are special around me. It makes me, and I'm sure many others, feel less alone. Thank you. With great love and wishes, a fellow musician.

Hey Randall, I'm a huge fan of your works, we have played 2 of your pieces in band, Blue Sky Horizon, and this one. I find it unbelievable that you can write one of the funest songs to play and listen to, and then write an emotional piece about depression and anxiety, being someone diagnosed with both of those things, this song nearly brpught me to tears the first time we played it, so thanks Mr. Standridge.

I’m a clarinet in my high school band and when I received this piece for a competition we are competing in I was very amused. I’ve struggled with anxiety and other mental conditions for a couple of years after some trauma and this song brings me to tears truly. It’s written beautifully and displays so many of the hardships people with mental health problems deal with on the daily, from the anxiety ridden beginning to the hopeful and clear end this piece is certainly a wonderful creation. (P.S. love the woodwind emphasis, we don’t get it that often in concert or competition pieces but you did it wonderfully!) Thank you.

We’re going to play this for my spring concert this year and I’m so scared because I play the flute and flute is so exposed, but this peace is amazing and I absolutely love it. It’s my favorite piece I’ve ever played in band

IIRC that is the point! Standridge wanted all different skill levels to be able to play something that conveys this message, so there are 3 different pieces at 3 different difficulty levels all containing similar musical motifs.
