i had a 91 CRX that had pretty much the same interior, and i loved that steering wheel. even with no power steering, it was just such a nice car to drive. the interior fit and finish was very impressive for a cheap, little car and i regret selling it to this day.
This channel ignited my obsession with cars. I say obsession because I went from liking a certain sect of cars to now wanting to know about small details of EVERY car. Even a 1991 civic is interesting as hell and it's all thanks to you, Mr. Regular. Thanks
Old Hondas are some of the nicest FWD cars to drive. Good visibility, compliant yet composed dwb suspensions, great steering and shifters, etc. I've owned 2 already and I really should get another.
I’m 18 and I got my first car last year which was a 91 civic dx hatch and at first I really didn’t want it but now that I’ve fixed it up and driven it I realized that this car is a gem honestly the best civic of the 90’s imo
Nostalgia, nostalgia, ... sigh. I am really liking. I had bought new in 1978 a 1979 Civic CVCC. Waited many months. My first new car. I loved it. Went to school. Sold it. Miss it. Thanks.
These EF’s with a 5 speed is perfection. I bought one for $800 last year with no vents, exhaust, or speakers. The burnouts you can accidentally do by just being a bit peppy, literally made me laugh and always put a smile on my face.
It was terrifying at 70mph though. Slammed on the ground, and 4.5k RPM in 5th was deafening. All the low end torque you could want, but after 50, it was slow.
Love how Hondas all feel so good to drive no matter what year they are... but I miss good visibility. My modern Honda is *impossible* to see out of, like turn your head 30 degrees off center and out the front you can't see shit.
The 4 speed trans is the same as the other trans, except there is a spacer collar on the gear shafts where fifth gear normally goes, and 5th gear shift fork is omitted. The 1-4 gears are the same as Honda used in the CRX HF. The final drive is the same 3.888 that's found in many other cable D-series trans. The reason that you love the way that the transmission shifts is because it uses shift rod linkage rather than cable linkage. Btw, the reason that I know all of this about these transmissions is because I have torn down about 30 of them around ten years ago, and my father is still telling me to get the remaining parts out of the barn. If you care to know more about modding that transmission, search for threads by "Bense" on the forums, you'll find an overwhelming amount of information about them, and only because I was crazy enough to obsess over modifying them ~10 years ago. If you're interested, hit me up and I'll send you some trans parts for little to no cost. The shift forks wear out and Honda no longer has any to sell you. I've got about 20 sets.
Hey man, I don't know if you're still around, but I recently picked up an 88' CRX DX. It's an auto, and I was thinking about doing a manual swap. It has the D15B2.
had a 91 hatch when i was 16 and still have a soft spot for these things. I sometimes cant help myself to gander craigslist for one. The 5 speed really helps make those things a lil more peppy
What a great little car. My father-in-law bought it new and put about 200k miles on it before he gave it to my wife who put another 100k on it before I got it and put about 75k on it. My nephew now owns it and it currently has almost 390,000 miles on the odo. Great driving position, unreal visibility, great on gas, reliable, fun to drive and very utilitarian.
I always have a soft spot for these older Hondas. When I was 17, fresh from getting my license there was a neighbor who was selling a ‘91 dx hb that I wanted badly. By the time I gathered the last remaining amount to buy it he sold it. Ever since then I’ve been saying to myself if I can grace the opportunity to find one stock or close to it to have as a project/daily driver I’ll jump on it. Thanks for the video 💪🏾
I had a JDM Civic from 1991, has a similar body like this one but it was an automatic sedan. The engine that came with it was a ZC (16v EFI), the same one as the CRX. Disc brakes all around, a/c and electric locks and windows. The best thing of that car was the superb visibility as seen on this video. (Yes JDM which had the steering relocated).
My first Honda was a '91 SH4, same color as that one. Known in SA as the Ballade. For those that don't know, it has the identical front end but is a saloon, the interior is also the same. In SA we had the choice of 1.5 SOHC motor, or the DOHC 1.6. The 1.5 had A/C, the 1.6 only power steering, apparently there was no space under the hood to have both! Do I remember right? Great great great car! I did almost 300k km before it rusted away under me!
Bought one of those bad boys just a couple weeks ago. They are brilliant. Don't know about the others but the twin carb'd 1.4 revs like a motorcycle. It's awesome fun on twisties.
I had this exact car, same color, same base model, same 4-speed manual (except mine didn't have AC). I drove it from Pennsylvania to Texas and back. The lack of a fifth gear never bothered me. Seeing this makes me miss mine so bad. I'll be checking out Craigslist later to find my own, I think. :)
I've had a REALLY shitty CRX with the D15B2 engine (DX), and loved how that car drove. I also got addicted to hypermiling once I managed to easily shatter the 50mpg mark in that car. So later moved to a much nicer CRX HF with the high-torque, low-power 8-valve engine. That car got 60mpg pretty easy, but lost a lot of the pizzazz and funloving spirit of the 16-valve car. In short order the HF got smashed by some doofus in a Range Rover. I then moved to an EG Civic VX hatch, with the VTEC-E lean-burn engine. That engine had the pizzazz again, but with the long gearing it was more aggravating than fun. And while it was supposed to match the HF for mileage, due to mysterious suspension issues it always had too much rolling resistance and never really hit its marks. Then later I ascended all the way to the absolute Mountain Top, with the Mighty 1st-gen Insight in LIME GREEN, baby. That car completely smashed all comers in the fuel economy game, very easily nailing down 50-something numbers in city driving and 65 to 85 (!!!) on the highway depending on weather. Very unexpectedly, the Insight even handled very nicely. However, the hybrid system proved to be completely retarded to the point of being actively counterproductive often as not. Eventually the battery failed and I turned it off and drove it as a pure gas car (which I don't think any other hybrid is able to do). Very slow, but almost no difference in mileage. Now recently, the Insight is due for a few major services (timing belt, clutch) and I went and picked up an EF Civic DX hatch to use temporarily so that I'm dailying the 5.9L Dodge Dakota and thus adding $20 to the stock price of every oil company. And you know what, I'm loving the hell out of this thing. I've steadily been notching the sportiness lower and lower with my Hondas, going to more and more sophisticated technology all while staying at the 2000lb tinycar form factor. I miss my air conditioning and the better seats and the safety and the LIME GREEN and everything from the Insight, but the old EF has such a more lively engine, infinitely more communicative steering, and the knowledge that if I need to pull the engine there's no worry about great bolts of 144v lightning exploding my organs. When we get the Insight put back together, I'll have a decision to make, and I really can't say right now which way I'm going to go.
Tesla swap the insight and make it your "fun" car, throw some beadlocks and sticky icky on the front and some skinny tires on the back and pull on fools at a dragstrip with it.
@@themadscientest Unfortunately the EF got stolen so the Insight is back to daily duty. And, between the V8 and 5 motorcycles, I'm good on the fast toys.
I jonesed for a 4th gen Civic hatchback Si back when they came out...sweet little car. I had an 87' Integra two door that had the same kick butt suspension basically and it really handled unbelievably and had a little more power. I could actually hang with a Mustang 5.0 of the same vintage back then(the v8 was choked down to 215hp back then). I also had a CRX HF, which handled very nicely. Back then Honda's were drivers cars and affordable. Very fun without the need for huge horsepower because of the power to weight ratio and great engineering.
I had that same sedan 1.5l 1991 GLI (power steering, 4 electric windows, electric mirrors and plush interior (chairs). It was fun car, easy to drive and play with... you could throw it to "drift" even on dry asphalt but it was also fun at winter. They have nearly all disappeared from roads by now. :(
Before I got my first car (1989 Base manual EF hatch) I knew literally jack about cars, much less how to drive a manual, 7 months later after buying it for $400 with 245k miles in suprisingly good condition and working AC (when I got it, whoops) I absolutely love it. Regardless of having to put in new ball joints, axles, rebuilding the rack, and other suspension, steering, and engine tune ups, It's absolutely fantastic, and it drives like a dream. (which is to say it's basically a go cart) 14/10 car, get one if you can
It's interesting to see how Honda kept some dash styling cues over the years. I see some similar lines in my 2015 civic represented in this EF. It's a shame they didn't make a small hatch for 2015 though.
I know you said "Props to Grandma..." for driving a stick. We have to remember that manual transmissions were most likely more common in her days. (Depending on how old she was.)
I'm looking to get my first car soon enough. There's a '91 EF 1.4L for sale here in Ireland. Looks unmodified, and has power steering and a sunroof. It also seems to have a higher class interior with a tach and a few more buttons (I think I see one of those old red digital clocks in the center too). 90k miles. If I had the money, I'd be getting this right now.
I don't know if US ever got a Peugeot 205 (apart from Pikes Peak racer), but it is a very serious contender for those Hondas, Suzukis, VWs and other small hatchbacks. I'd love to see you do a review of one.
Agreed. I drive one. It had a lot of previous owners that didn't treat it nicely, so all the electronics are broken and half-fixed by me. It's beat up and dented, but it's the most fun car I've ever driven, maybe apart from an MX-5. Why? It weighs nothing, so even with a 75hp engine, it's pretty quick. It's nimble in corners and without power steering, power brakes, ABS, a throttle pedal that's directly linked to a lever on the engine and a manual gearbox that'll take a fair beating, it's a very pure driving experience. It's practical too, with a surprisingly large boot and great visibility. I love this car and I'd love to see RCR review one. Maybe he'll find one on his Great Britain tour.
Yea that 55mph mark is for the optimal performance of the engine mpg wise. Although that must be with older vehicles bc i commute from baltimore to DC everyday (about 80 miles round trip) & i tried driving tat 55-60 mph one week & my normal 75-80 mph the next & my 2001 yukon xl 5.3 v8 STILL only averaged 13mpg's honestly the 55-60 trip seemed to have to accelerate more while in cruise control bc when approaching the slightest incline it had to work harder to pull that 7000 + lbs truck up it. As apposed to cruising at 75-80 it just rolled along. Idk. Either way i loved my 90 civic dx BEFORE I HAD KIDS & DAD BOD but am def gna hunt one down very soon for my commute vehicle. Since my yukon blows through 33.5 gal tank every 4 days or so. 👍👍👍thanks for video guys
It's funny that the type doesn't correspond to the European models. Here the ED6 has 90bhp, the 75 version being the EC8. And the holy grail is the EE9 with its 150 bhp.
NordenTV If it's not stock it's not legal. And it's not just about cops it's about insurance. If you have anything aftermarket they have the right to not cover you. Of course some people take the risk and do it anyway. My point being that you better pay 2000 euros extra and get the best model.
Its called a "Reverse Lock Out". Having to shift 1st to... 1st (ugh) before being allowed to shift to reverse is a safety feature in modern manuals. That way you can't go from 3rd to reverse by mistake at speed. Or 5th, if it were to have it. And what was the reason behind the lack of A/C? R12 is hard to get and expensive, but they make R134a retrofit kits.
Yeah im bout to get one soon next month for around 1,500 yup it has 200,000 something onit yup cant wait love these things you dont even see them anymore Only thing that doesn't work is the rear defroster And the rear Windshield wiper lol but yeah its a sweet ride
This car makes me miss my 1990 Nissan Sentra that had a 5 speed manual. Power NOTHING. It had a 1.6 liter in it. 89HP & 98ft lbs of torque. It didn't do well with grades steeper than 4%. 6%+, I had to floor it in 4th gear to maintain the same speed.. I was "given" the car when it had 104k miles on it. I had to replace the ignition cylinder because the previous driver had 5 pounds of keys hanging from it. I drove it til around 165k miles.
I have the sedan of the same generation but all the problems and stuff you described are all the same problems I have in mine it's almost like you're driving my car🤣
Yet another keyring with a long red strap. Do you give those to people before filming or do people who share their cars with you just happen to be the same sort of people who keep their keys on a leash?
TheDox451 I was refering from an consumer perspective, not the actual country that produced them...The Golf II was built from 1983 to 1992. The most popular engines were the 1.3L 55 bhp petrol, the 1.6L 75 bhp petrol, and the 1.6 diesel 54 bhp and the 1.6 diesel with a turbo which made 69 bhp. Very basic cars, but incredibly sturdy. Many of them still live on today's roads.
Acquadelic Civic would be slightly smaller and slightly faster Golf mk2 or early mk3. Honda revs higher giving it more hp, but I would bet golfs had more torque.
I have one tryin to get the swap to run crank but no start diagnosis so far code 19 on pm7 ecu ive searched and seen i might have an auto ecu but the digit reads a05 which technically identifies it as a manual ecu
There is a EF Si sitting outside a shop and going to be sent to the crusher in 2 months, they asked me 200 dollars for it but its fucked up so i said no
Classic hondas are proof that you don't need a lot of power to have fun.
But modern Hondas are too heavy like every other car.
Just engine swap them and there mini machines
Professa_252 classic Honda's are proof you don't need a hybrid.
These Civics and also Miatas prove that
Drive my 90 hatch every day with a smile, and surprisingly get a lot of people who fw it.
I dunno why, but that steering wheel is very simple yet so nice to look at.
What is that? Is that an Audi?
It's a Ferrari
Audi 80 B2 from around 1983
Old skinny steering wheels are my fetish

I definitely want one , I found a good 1990 model...thinking of getting it in the next few days
My 2013 Accord behaves the same way with reverse. You have to select 1st before it'll take reverse most of the time
my wife dives the car alot I don't know what that's about
The reverse gear has a lockout so you can't select it while going forward. I assume that's the reason.
lol wut
LOL what the fuck

The one you want is the EG hatch. Nearly the same car except the EG has port injection, hydraulic clutch, and a 5 spd transmission.
4th gen SI has port injection. Also 5spd.
Almost all of these are 5 speed, the Si has port injection and I'm a fan of the cable clutch.
It's amazing how much more fun that car looks to drive than the Fit.
I can deeply relate to this video.
I had one Identical to this one, got taken out when an old lady decided to turn left on red. Miss that little Civic :(
Thank you so much for posting this. I really enjoyed it!
"and you can see! the visibility is so... *stop sign* there a car coming?"
It's funny that the type doesn't correspond to the European models. Here the ED6 has 90bhp, the 75 version being the EC8. And the holy grail is the EE9 with its 150 bhp.
1.6 DOHC (D16A9) found in ED7 Civic & CRX can be almost as good. Properly tuned can reach 150-180 hp as na. Slightly lighter than B16 too.
Tuning is not legal in my country so better get the best engine from the start.
Not even exhaust, header? Adjustable cam gears? Those things help a lot. Law is strict here too though.

If it's not stock it's not legal. And it's not just about cops it's about insurance. If you have anything aftermarket they have the right to not cover you. Of course some people take the risk and do it anyway.
My point being that you better pay 2000 euros extra and get the best model.
And i thought i was living in a nanny state.
Damn you Regular... I need one, RIGHT NOW
That Ayrton Senna air freshner haha
saw one just like this on campus today. Awesome small car.
My '91 CRX HF has the 55mph highlighted. Its for optimum fuel efficiency
no back then the top ever speed limit was 55mph so that means you shouldn't go faster than that
that's right, my 88 prelude had the same thing
LOL no dude, the maximum speed limit was not 55mph in 1991.
Its for fuel efficiency, look it up.
R12 is hard to get and expensive, but they make R134a retrofit kits.
these are old enough to import and you could get faster versions, the only thing is how much and how long would it take to import
"I am a better driver in snow"
Yeah but you crashed your Toyota in snow and then said "I was at the speed limit" lmao
Learning from mistakes.
Black ice
When I was little my parents had a white EF si. Probably a sought after car now especially stock
You need to do a Buick Reatta. Theres one i see all the time and i always think "What was that thing FOR?"
Yeah im bout to get one soon next month for around 1,500 yup it has 200,000 something onit yup cant wait love these things you dont even see them anymore Only thing that doesn't work is the rear defroster And the rear Windshield wiper lol but yeah its a sweet ride
You know what's fun too? 2000's hyundai getz, pretty fun! try it whenever you can
those cars suck
I have 185s on my Ignis, narrow tyres are great.
I cant find one anywhere thats worth looking at here in MA. I found a couple nice ones but people were looking for 5-7 thousand..
My friend's family had a 4 speed one is rough shape when we were young. I think they sold it because the rust was taking over :(
Was this filmed right outside the Women's and Babies? I used to drive over that bridge all the time taking my mother to chemo.
I respect the Senna helmet air freshener.
I learnt to drive in a Honda Jazz, the not taking rear gear issue was a pita occasionally :p
felt exacly as if you were driving my '91 suzuki swift
Thats exactly what I was thinking, except I have a 96 Subaru Justy, which is just a 4wd swift anyway.
I miss my 93 Geo Metro
rs0ares I had a 1999 Hyundai Accent, similar concept, a little bigger, lots of fun
Bro when you start your drive.....ive noticed the area...its cause i live in the same area....Your from Lancaster Pa am i right?
WAIT!? My civic (95) doesn't want to go in reverse until you shift into 1st too!
You sound just like Matt Farah at the end there
I have the sedan of the same generation but all the problems and stuff you described are all the same problems I have in mine it's almost like you're driving my car🤣
Such fun cars to drive
These are so much fun!
Does anyone see the NSX interior in this interior? I mean the line across from left to right
55 MPH is the maximum speed you can go before wind resistance starts to increase exponentially.
Yet another keyring with a long red strap. Do you give those to people before filming or do people who share their cars with you just happen to be the same sort of people who keep their keys on a leash?
New but doesn't feel new? Did he break it in right?
hey Mr regular I was wondering if you would ever review a Honda crz???
Is this the american equivalent to the Mk 1 VW Golf ?
...er, it's Japanese, and no.
Thats a japanese car, Honda Cvic. I think the car is newer than golf 1, maybe from golf 2 era, but golf is a bigger and more expensive car.
***** Are you REALLY comparing a basic Honda Civic to a Mk2 VW Golf? Which planet are you from?
I have a clean one...video up of the makeover after 23 yrs ownership.
I have one tryin to get the swap to run crank but no start diagnosis so far code 19 on pm7 ecu ive searched and seen i might have an auto ecu but the digit reads a05 which technically identifies it as a manual ecu
Wow, you don't leave the Fit keys with your beta orbiters? you make them wait, locked out of the car? haha
So much flashbacks to my CRX :(
did you guys notice the Senna's helmet air freshener?
wagovan FWD 5spd was my favorite honda
4:42 That which you called a Touareg was actually a Tiguan.
There is a EF Si sitting outside a shop and going to be sent to the crusher in 2 months, they asked me 200 dollars for it but its fucked up so i said no
I miss cars like these. Oh well at least there is like the Type R
Grandma likes the stick.
i had a 1990 sedan, 5 speed with the crap 1.5, still broke 120mph!
makes me miss my crx soooo much
Why does it have a super charger?!
Review a freaking Geo Metro D:
when are you gonna do an iroc!
