My father died not so long ago. My heart is filled with grief. However, listened g to this song every night and somehow it has been giving me comfort and strenght even if it is so sad Helen
Bossa nova , fado, blues , bolero, tango, all beautiful forms of music. But my god the celts really know how to use your heartstrings to touch the deepest part of your heart ,it's like they want to make you not forget you have a soul!! We Mexicans feel the Irish Brothers, our songs make you cry too, But the celts also make you drink! Thank you brothers for your soulful music!
It always irks me slightly when I hear some ladies airbrushing out "To my love and die," part of the beautiful power this evocative song has, is in its sadness, the most innocent of all emotions. Brilliantly done !! so moving.
Gordon's voice excels in this rendition of the timeless Irish Ballad I love the best. He demonstrates a full range of voice excelling all the while. Well done Loudon. The best version i have heard and I am a man from who played toones in garcie Neill's pub in Carrickfergus. I am Junglejim
@@mikeantell533 - she was annoying. Just another Carmela Soprano or Skylar White. Complains, very rude to the help, always guilt tripping the husband, unfaithful, all the while never refusing the money and good life.
@@shapiroshekelberg604 Skyler had some complexity to her. Margaret could have been completely forgotten about from one episode to the next and I wouldn't have cared at all. I have always loved this beautiful song... And with the passing of as many seasons as I have seen, I can appreciate it even more now. Wainwright does a wonderful version, true to the intention and feeling of the song.
Very beautiful! Thank you for uploading. I have to admit that boardwalk empire brought me here. Even though the words are about an Irishman l think the longing feeling expressed by the song is universal
So Loudon Wainwright really is a folk singer after all! Beautiful tune, beautiful words - and a great voice ( though as far as the words are concerned, I've always doubted that someone who was "drunk today and seldom sober" would actually be a "handsome" rover...
Love this tune, have many Celtic CDs. Their sonsg bring a sense of peace. Even though they of sadness. Wish I could find a CD with Wainwright III singing it.
Je viens de passer quelques jours en Irlande et ai maintes fois entendu cette chanson au début des concerts de musique celtique. Je suis heureux grâce aux paroles écrites de pouvoir en saisir toute la mélancolie que laissait transparaître la mélodie.
Like others, thanks so much for the upload of this version of this haunting song. Have heard other excellent renditions, but, to me, this is the best and also includes a verse not usually heard. This was not available as MP3 download that I could find, so you did a very good deed!
The basis of the song goes back to the 1700's..The song was "Do bhí bean uasal" ( There was a Noblewoman) and contained a few of the modern lyrics...The song has changed a great deal over the many years and the version we all know is from the 1960's. Again, the song has evolved a great deal since the earliest known versions.
This is such a beautiful song. Even though I'm nowhere near as old as the sailors who originally penned this ode, it reminds of my own childhood memories back home, which unfortunately is no more (demolished), with the rest of the surrounds entirely unrecognizable. Perfect song to drink to, my fellow wanderers!
No shame in finding great music via TV shows .... musicians can get a bit precious about this. I'd never heard this song before watching Boardwalk Empire and so the LWIII version was the first I experienced. Since listened to countless others. . None beats LWIII in my opinion.
Carrickfergus is the supposed ancestral home of U.S. president Andrew Jackson, although his biographer James Parton could find no records linking the family to this place. This song shares some lyrics with the ancient lay "The River is Wide".
Most of the lyrics are correct, except for possibly a few, and they are close. One is at the end, where it should be "So come, ye young men, and lay me down." Refers to being carried to his deathbed, or possibly to his grave by the strong men of the village. The word seems to be "ye" rather than "here". It's an older way of saying "come, you young men". Enjoyed the video though. I've been looking for this version for a while now.
The definitive version now is the 2009 Transatlantic Sessions with Allison Moorer. It surpasses every other cover bringing a depth and beauty to this song a realisation of the song that before hearing it one could not imagine. Considering all of the covers that had been done it's extraordinary that so late in this songs history it is that cover that has become the standard that all other covers are now judged by.
Yep, this is a beautiful tune making no sense: - why did you leave Carrickfergus if your love one was there? - you can't afford a way back (I presume from America), what the f....? - what was the whole enterprise for? - my strong suspicion is, based on the lyrics, that you spent 90% of money on whiskey and gin Carrickfergus - I wish I visit it before I die, but I won't go to not be totally disappointed.
the best version
I live in Carrickfergus 💙
I’m not even Irish, and this song and version brings me to tears. You can actually feel and visualize this town! Hats off!
It's such a relief to listen to this version without hearing Eli puking in the background.
8 years later, best comment in here.
Both inscrutable and hilarious at the same time.
In 100 years when people read this they'll wonder who the fuck Eli is.
I steered her on to the lawn and held her hair back whilst she was vomiting .Six years later she was dead from alcoholic poisoning.Memories,eh?
But Margaret finally making out with Nucky. Payoff !
My father died not so long ago. My heart is filled with grief. However, listened g to this song every night and somehow it has been giving me comfort and strenght even if it is so sad

Questa canzone è tanto triste ma meravigliosa😢❤️
Same here!
One of the most beautiful and saddest songs ever...
Bossa nova , fado, blues , bolero, tango, all beautiful forms of music.

Beautiful Loyalist Carrick.
This song is straight from the mouth and soul of God. I'm 100% NOT IRISH but I LOVE this song. Much love to Ireland from Oakland, Ca.
Board walk empire was one of the best show ever HBO ain't no joke.....I love this song also omg tears comes out when I heard that song....
It always irks me slightly when I hear some ladies airbrushing out "To my love and die," part of the beautiful power this evocative song has, is in its sadness, the most innocent of all emotions. Brilliantly done !! so moving.
10-4. If you don’t want to sing about loss and grief, find a different song.
I've listened to this 100 times now or more!! Wonderful , heartfelt song!! And yes I did first hear it on Boardwalk
Best version of this..so heartfelt Wainwright knocked this out of the park...
A beautiful version of this song.
Beautiful. I defy you not to shed a tear . God bless Louden , and God bless the Celts ... the salt of the Earth
Missed this superb song first time round, it touches the soul.!!!

Loudon forcefully conveys the emotion of these inspired lyrics.....splendid performance!
"I have no time for games Margaret..."
"Margaret???" yeah right... that feigned surprised... bullshit.. she knew what was coming... Zod damn she's adorable...
@@mikeantell533 Hell Hath No Fury Like A Woman Scorned. Margaret played him perfectly.

Great song!! Going to be played at my funeral. But not for a long time from now, i hope!!!
🥺
that's it, I'm moving to Ireland.
It just doesn't get any better than this. Such beautiful music
what a beautiful haunting song,,,sung with so much emotion,,,loverly
The emotion that this song stirs inside me is sometimes so overwhelming . .
'On that long road down to the salty sea' . .
I remember when I was young my grandpa would sing this and everyone would be silent
Beautifully song by Loudon. Thanks for posting it.
Centuries of loss "we are a sorrowful people".
Very beautiful! Thank you for uploading. I have to admit that boardwalk empire brought me here. Even though the words are about an Irishman l think the longing feeling expressed by the song is universal
The best version ever, and just in time for St. Patrick's Day.
What a beautiful version.
just heard it in board walk empire,
was glad I could find it (despite of the fast credits)
very beautiful song
So Loudon Wainwright really is a folk singer after all! Beautiful tune, beautiful words - and a great voice ( though as far as the words are concerned, I've always doubted that someone who was "drunk today and seldom sober" would actually be a "handsome" rover...
I read that "handsome" meant "handy" -- as in "handyman." So he was a traveling handyman, doing odd jobs.
Love this tune, have many Celtic CDs. Their sonsg bring a sense of peace. Even though they of sadness. Wish I could find a CD with Wainwright III singing it.
Ah, the versatility! From the humor of "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road" to the haunting beauty of an old man's reflections in Carrickfergus.
My darling Magnificent Gorgeous Bridget (MGB) bought me here
My love of Loudon Wainwright III's music sent me here.
It's 4 a.m. I'm nursing my last one. This song plays in the background. Tears well. up...time to go...
Love this version, thanks for uploading.
Bloody beautiful, I’m not an Irishman but an Immigrant living in 🇦🇺 originally from 🇵🇬 ❤️ ... credits to Boardwalk Empire 🥰

Sung from the heart to be true ... nice an easy the way it should be , with great playing with the band who feel the groove.
He's written some great songs but it's good to hear him sing a song he would have loved to have as his own.
Yes, thanks for the upload, English is great!!!

Yes. Hi, Carrickfergus native here. It is, I live quite near his family home, it's been turned into a museum.
THe HBO version I saw omitted the last two lines ending in "come lay me down"

Awesome- Love it!!

Tanx a million!!!!!!!!!!!!
