I think this is similar to the U.S. and Canada (where I live). I think we did not appreciate that by increasing the number of immigrants (who are screened for finances, education, etc.) and the ever-increasing number of refugees (who are not screened for language, education, savings) we were fundamentally changing the make-up of our country. This is what 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation Canadians, for example, have just realized. And it is a tremendous shock. It's not to say that we view every change as bad, but it is the knowledge that those changes have happened without us being aware of them, and are fundamentally influencing the way we vote, our laws, our religious beliefs, our morals and our values. The recent protests over the fighting between Israel and Hamas shocked Canadians who suddenly realized how many Palestinians and other Arabs were living in our country. And to see the violent ways that they manipulated university students who knew nothing about the history of Israel-Arab relations was astounding. There were university students who when questioned believed that the hostages had been taken by the Israelis. I think the violent reactions in the last weeks in the U.K. may be partly because citizens now realize that allowing all these refugees in is not just a humanitarian or economic issue - it is changing the U.K. in ways that you have not been able to vote for, or consciously adapt to - and it is terrifying. And you can see the face of that terror on the streets.
I am British and have lived in Asia, Eastern Europe, the US, and the Caribbean. I have viewed ethnic tensions as an outsider. The English political media class seemed to believe the UK was above this sort of thing. At the Potsdam Conference in 1945, the Allies recognised that ethnic tensions had been a major cause of WW2. British historians bang on about appeasement. One of the root causes was the borders drawn up at Versailles in 1919 and the creation of multi-ethnic countries like Czechoslovakia. About 12 million ethnic Germans were expelled from Eastern and central Europe in the late 1940s. There was also other ethnic cleansing to create ethnically homogenous countries. This was considered necessary in Europe, which was white and Christian. How Britain puts the genie back in the bottle god only knows.
It's going to be quite easy. The established powers engaged in this social engineering to de-industrialize the local and world economies. The process of reversing this trend (which has now finished) is something the European powers have engaged multiple times throughout history. We know exactly how to do it. You are absolutely right. Greek word "phobia" means irrational, uncontrolled or poorly controlled fear of something (spiders, for example, which is "acrophobia"). Notion "islamophobia" (same as "homophobia", "transphobia") has no sense. We do not fear Islam and Muslims, we don't accept and reject their values, their loath for our country and our way of life resulting in them hating us and murdering us here in the UK, all over Europe and worldwide.
And given Islam's 1,400 year history of conquest and enslavement of non Muslims , that well founded concern regarding eventual ethnic replacement of Europeans , in traditionally European nations , is indeed rational .

Both of these are subjective preferences so we can't really say one is more legitimate than the other. So how about these two conflicting groups seek some compromise position rather than try to conquer each other and force either unlimited diversity or total homogeneity upon each other? Most of us with a preference for homogeneity are willing to tolerate some level of diversity within a country. Almost no one believes 100% homogeneity is even possible, let alone necessarily desirable. In a world of easy travel it is unrealistic to expect anywhere to remain 100% racially or culturally homogeneous. But we could limit immigration so the country remains mostly (though not totally) homogeneous - so the ethnic English, Scots, Welsh, and Irish remain the majorities in their ancestral homelands. But I get the impression that people on your side of the aisle wouldn't be willing to place any limit on diversity or immigration at all. Ever. Civil unrest in a 50 yard radius of a notoriously dodgy area is only a big deal to the shop owners affected. The fact that a 40 year old man was gang raped whilst walking his dog over a year ago by immigrants in the Shankill and it was memory holed by the Police and the media is more of a worry.

There also will be no mass second wave as seen from abroad, since there are not the core numbers here to create one. The comparative trickle that does migrate, usually does so with a will to assimilate to the culture they give up their homes for. Similar to the mindset of early Iranian refugees of the Islamic Republic, they don't impose their ways on their new homeland. It's both due to number as well as attitude. I'm not sure the conflict is about ethnicity though so much as it's about ideology and economics. Islam is not a specific ethnic group, it's a religion followed by people of many different ethnic groups. And the animosity against recent migrants and asylum seekers is not so much driven by where they're from, as by the perception that they're getting preferential treatment at the expense of existing British citizens of all ethnicities.
We cannot ignore that Islam is more common among immigrants of some ethnic backgrounds more so than others. You cannot bring in large numbers of Pakistani immigrants, for example, and expect most of them to be highly educated Liberal atheists rather than Muslims.

It's against fundamentalist Muslims (of any ethnicity). Or it's against asylum seekers (of any ethnicity) who appear to get favourable treatment despite weak claims. There might be a few exceptions. For example I'd imagine there's more general suspicion of people from Pakistan's tribal regions after the grooming gangs scandal.

That commentator, Aris Roussinos, has shown a level of understanding of the issue in Northern Ireland I cannot say I've ever heard from an 'English' commentator before. Very surprisingly knowledgeable. The reason the plantation in Ulster did not integrate into the general Irish population (like many other plantations) was the large numbers involved. The reason the muslim population are not integrating into British society is because of the large number, social and religious conservatism and that they are generally poor. The solution is to slow the rate of immigration... and add time. As for the Ulster flag and tricolour intermingling in the same riot, this is truly shocking. Good luck Britain!

The English are born form German tribes in fact. The first people to be called the "British", in the modern sense of the word, were the mix of English and lowland Scots colonists who were planted into Ireland in the 17th and 18th centuries with the aim of replacing the Irish (a genuine attempt at "replacement" although it wasn't completely successful). They were now living in Ireland but needed a name to call themselves in order to distinguish themselves from the Irish, and "mostly lowland Scots and English" was too long, hence the birth of the "British", which they borrowed from the Roman name for the Welsh. Interestingly the lowlands Scots had already borrowed their name "Scots" form the Roman name for the Irish, but that goes back to before the English emigrated to Britain.

The Northern Ireland historical conflict was primarily about ethnic irish being dispossessed of it's land which had be invaded by British Protestants (Planters) from 1609 onward. This was known as the Plantation of Ulster and the English-speaking Protestants who took part were called 'planters'. The current conflict is a mixture of the historical but with an added perceived enemy - Mass migration of foreign cultures i.e. Islamic etc which is being imposed without the consent of the people. It is seen as the enemy of both the Irish Republicans and the Protestant Loyalists. If it continues it is a threat to the Irish Catholic and Ulster Protestant culture.
Arris is right about identity. From what I recall David Lamy is able to identify as African, West Indian, British and English. But the English callers could not get through to him that he was not ethnically English. In other words citizenship and ethnicity are often merged to be one and the same thing when they are not. For example a Nigerian taking Italian citizenship all of a sudden becomes Italian ! Citizenship wise yes but not ethnically. And because migration is broadly to the west, Europeans are in effect being told that they don’t have an ethnicity as such but a citizenship. We had the Brexit vote in 2016, one of the largest issues being immigration. We had the election victories for the Tories in 2015 and 2019 (I won't talk about 2010 or 2017) in which they promised to reduce immigration levels to the tens of thousands. We had Reform come third in 2024 with over 4 million votes. How many more times do the elite need to be told? I'm sorry, but this has been waiting in the wings for years. I hope the rioters are cuaght because destruction of property, assault, etc. is illegal, but sometimes it takes more than a vote to get the point across, I think.

As someone who grew up in the troubles in the north of Ireland, and has family with decades of stories from the last civil war in Ireland during the 1920s - all of the symptoms are now present in modern day England. It’s actually concerning how fast this is growing and believe me, England is heading toward a major civil war that will engulf your every day life faster than you can blink once it gets going. The reason why is once societal norms break down and you start seeing things that you’ve never seen before happen daily then you are forced onto one of the two sides. You will have no choice as you’ll either choose, or you’ll be assumed to one. It’s scary how fast this can happen. Also, please stop calling them ‘Catholic’ and ‘Protestant’ as this isn’t really fair given this its a nationalistic position both sides sit on. Not religious. I’m Protestant but I’m a proud Irishman. I’m not British in any way shape or form.

As a Belfast man it fills me with pride to see the ethos of the Troubles finding a new home in England and beyond. It was said that the ethos of the Troubles was anachronistic, not of this world at this time. Now we know that this lazy description was wrong. The ethos of the Troubles is all too contemporary, it is finding a home at various speeds in various towns and regions in accord with the level of immigration. It's true that ethnicity can include a combination of variables, like culture. However, connotatively (and this is one of its specific meanings,) it usually refers nowadays to shared ancestry. English and Irish would be two different ethnicities. Those are subcategories, while British ethnicity would include English, Irish (Northern,) Scottish, and Welsh. From my understanding, it takes many, many generations for a new distinct genotype to form. Race on the other hand, is simply a broader category used for large ancestral-group combinations, throughout entire world-regions. It's a bit of a superficial shorthand (often invokes skin color) but is a categorization tool, from a wide perspective. 'Races': White European, Black, Asian, Indigenous (from Americas) You've got your mixed-ethnicity ppl, like me (Italo-Swiss-British,) and you've got your mixed-race ppl, like my half-Filipino cousin.
Huguenots were northern French protestants who looked very similar to the English. Not much of a problem to assimilate. There were Dutch and an important German community of merchants in London. I think this is similar to the U.S. and Canada (where I live). I think we did not appreciate that by increasing the number of immigrants (who are screened for finances, education, etc.) and the ever-increasing number of refugees (who are not screened for language, education, savings) we were fundamentally changing the make-up of our country. This is what 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation Canadians, for example, have just realized. And it is a tremendous shock. It's not to say that we view every change as bad, but it is the knowledge that those changes have happened without us being aware of them, and are fundamentally influencing the way we vote, our laws, our religious beliefs, our morals and our values.
The recent protests over the fighting between Israel and Hamas shocked Canadians who suddenly realized how many Palestinians and other Arabs were living in our country. And to see the violent ways that they manipulated university students who knew nothing about the history of Israel-Arab relations was astounding. There were university students who when questioned believed that the hostages had been taken by the Israelis. I think the violent reactions in the last weeks in the U.K. may be partly because citizens now realize that allowing all these refugees in is not just a humanitarian or economic issue - it is changing the U.K. in ways that you have not been able to vote for, or consciously adapt to - and it is terrifying. And you can see the face of that terror on the streets.

I am British and have lived in Asia, Eastern Europe, the US, and the Caribbean. I have viewed ethnic tensions as an outsider. The English political media class seemed to believe the UK was above this sort of thing. At the Potsdam Conference in 1945, the Allies recognised that ethnic tensions had been a major cause of WW2. British historians bang on about appeasement. One of the root causes was the borders drawn up at Versailles in 1919 and the creation of multi-ethnic countries like Czechoslovakia. About 12 million ethnic Germans were expelled from Eastern and central Europe in the late 1940s. There was also other ethnic cleansing to create ethnically homogenous countries. This was considered necessary in Europe, which was white and Christian. How Britain puts the genie back in the bottle god only knows.

You are absolutely right. Greek word "phobia" means irrational, uncontrolled or poorly controlled fear of something (spiders, for example, which is "acrophobia"). Notion "islamophobia" (same as "homophobia", "transphobia") has no sense. We do not fear Islam and Muslims, we don't accept and reject their values, their loath for our country and our way of life resulting in them hating us and murdering us here in the UK, all over Europe and worldwide.
And given Islam's 1,400 year history of conquest and enslavement of non Muslims , that well founded concern regarding eventual ethnic replacement of Europeans , in traditionally European nations , is indeed rational .

Both of these are subjective preferences so we can't really say one is more legitimate than the other. So how about these two conflicting groups seek some compromise position rather than try to conquer each other and force either unlimited diversity or total homogeneity upon each other? Most of us with a preference for homogeneity are willing to tolerate some level of diversity within a country. Almost no one believes 100% homogeneity is even possible, let alone necessarily desirable. In a world of easy travel it is unrealistic to expect anywhere to remain 100% racially or culturally homogeneous. But we could limit immigration so the country remains mostly (though not totally) homogeneous - so the ethnic English, Scots, Welsh, and Irish remain the majorities in their ancestral homelands. You'd still be able to enjoy your large, diverse, cosmopolitan cities with their array of different cultures.
But I get the impression that people on your side of the aisle wouldn't be willing to place any limit on diversity or immigration at all. Ever. Even if it means that the English, Scots (etc) are made into minorities on this island. So if there can be no compromise, then we will have irreconcilable differences, and those are often cause for violence in societies.

This conversation has had a profound effect on me. I'm so angry that ethnic conflict has been introduced into a wonderful country. I'm not sure the conflict is about ethnicity though so much as it's about ideology and economics. Islam is not a specific ethnic group, it's a religion followed by people of many different ethnic groups. And the animosity against recent migrants and asylum seekers is not so much driven by where they're from, as by the perception that they're getting preferential treatment at the expense of existing British citizens of all ethnicities.
There's also the decades of rape and murder to take into account.

But I don't think nationalist sentiment is specifically directed against "Pakistanis" for example. It's against fundamentalist Muslims (of any ethnicity). Or it's against asylum seekers (of any ethnicity) who appear to get favourable treatment despite weak claims.
There might be a few exceptions. For example I'd imagine there's more general suspicion of people from Pakistan's tribal regions after the grooming gangs scandal.

That commentator, Aris Roussinos, has shown a level of understanding of the issue in Northern Ireland I cannot say I've ever heard from an 'English' commentator before. Very surprisingly knowledgeable. The reason the plantation in Ulster did not integrate into the general Irish population (like many other plantations) was the large numbers involved. The reason the muslim population are not integrating into British society is because of the large number, social and religious conservatism and that they are generally poor. The solution is to slow the
rate of immigration... and add time. As for the Ulster flag and tricolour intermingling in the same riot, this is truly shocking.

The English are born form German tribes in fact. The first people to be called the "British", in the modern sense of the word, were the mix of English and lowland Scots colonists who were planted into Ireland in the 17th and 18th centuries with the aim of replacing the Irish (a genuine attempt at "replacement" although it wasn't completely successful). They were now living in Ireland but needed a name to call themselves in order to distinguish themselves from the Irish, and "mostly lowland Scots and English" was too long, hence the birth of the "British", which they borrowed from the Roman name for the Welsh. Interestingly the lowlands Scots had already borrowed their name "Scots" form the Roman name for the Irish, but that goes back to before the English emigrated to Britain.

The Northern Ireland historical conflict was primarily about ethnic irish being dispossessed of it's land which had be invaded by British Protestants (Planters) from 1609 onward. This was known as the Plantation of Ulster and the English-speaking Protestants who took part were called 'planters'. The current conflict is a mixture of the historical but with an added perceived enemy - Mass migration of foreign cultures i.e. Islamic etc which is being imposed without the consent of the people. It is seen as the enemy of both the Irish Republicans and the Protestant Loyalists. If it continues it is a threat to the Irish Catholic and Ulster Protestant culture.
Arris is right about identity. From what I recall David Lamy is able to identify as African, West Indian, British and English. But the English callers could not get through to him that he was not ethnically English. In other words citizenship and ethnicity are often merged to be one and the same thing when they are not. For example a Nigerian taking Italian citizenship all of a sudden becomes Italian ! Citizenship wise yes but not ethnically. And because migration is broadly to the west, Europeans are in effect being told that they don’t have an ethnicity as such but a citizenship. As someone who grew up in the troubles in the north of Ireland, and has family with decades of stories from the last civil war in Ireland during the 1920s - all of the symptoms are now present in modern day England. It’s actually concerning how fast this is growing and believe me, England is heading toward a major civil war that will engulf your every day life faster than you can blink once it gets going. As a Belfast man it fills me with pride to see the ethos of the Troubles finding a new home in England and beyond. British and Irish nationalists have been pretty united in their shared opposition to the migrant wave. A similar dynamic played out in Ireland before it did in the UK (the government taking over hotels and buildings in small and often poor Irish communities and bussing in groups of young third world migrant men during the middle of the night with no advance notice so that the local people couldn't organize against it, then the Irish media and elites calling ordinary people that opposed them "far right")

They often go hand in hand. We're unlikely to be getting massive amounts of atheist, liberal, secularists immigrating from Pakistan, for example. Muslim Pakistanis would be more common.

But are the anti immigration protests motivated by the immigrants ethnicity or by the clash of values and the unwillingness of immigrants to embrace core British values? For example I’d suspect that sharia law and democracy would struggle to coexist because sharia would essentially require non-Muslims to be subject to Islamic values.

It's true that ethnicity can include a combination of variables, like culture.
However, connotatively (and this is one of its specific meanings,) it usually refers nowadays to shared ancestry.
English and Irish would be two different ethnicities.
Those are subcategories, while British ethnicity would include English, Irish (Northern,) Scottish, and Welsh.
From my understanding, it takes many, many generations for a new distinct genotype to form.
Race on the other hand, is simply a broader category used for large ancestral-group combinations, throughout entire world-regions.
It's a bit of a superficial shorthand (often invokes skin color) but is a categorization tool, from a wide perspective.
'Races': White European, Black, Asian, Indigenous (from Americas)
You've got your mixed-ethnicity ppl, like me (Italo-Swiss-British,) and you've got your mixed-race ppl, like my half-Filipino cousin.
Huguenots were northern French protestants who looked very similar to the English. Not much of a problem to assimilate. There were Dutch and an important German community of merchants in London. Again there are no records of English folks becoming furious against Germans for alledgedly raping and stabbing young English girls and avenging them by burning German shops. Why would that be I wonder?

I am afraid that US policy of regime change in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Libya since the early 2000s has cause the migrant troubles throughout Europe. The same mindset continues regardless of ruling party.
The only country where the US was directly involved in regime change was Iraq. In Syria, the Assad regime is still in power, shows no sign of going anyhwere AND I can assure you that the USG has never undertaken operations to overthrow it. In Yemen, US ally Ali Abdullah Saleh was overthrown and assassinated by the Iran supported Houthis, hardly a move orchestrated by the USG. In Lybia, Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011 during the Libyan Civil War, a part of the wider wave of uprisings and protests known as the Arab Spring and which originally started in Tunisia.
