I can't believe there aren't more youtubers talking about these modern Model 70 rifles... I had a Christensen Arms MPR in 308... I ended up trading for what seems like the last Winchester Model 70 Coyote Lite suppressor ready in 308. So I traded a $2200 rifle for this particular $950 rifle and it was well worth it.

Its a gem! People just are not getting it. Its flying below the radar. Its because when Winchester went to push feed in the 70's they lost their following and now people do not understand these new controlled round feed Winchesters are really good.

You are absolutely right. I don’t get it either. This is the best quality, non-custom, rifle being sold in the US. Unfortunately, to keep the quality up and price down, it’s being assembled on Portugal.

I have one. I also thought it came straight from the M98, but some veterans told me that it is actually "grandson" of the M98 through the Springfield 1903 because of the cone-shaped chamber inlet design and angled lugs. Thank you for the channel and greetings from Spain

Bought my 1st. and last Winchester Model 70 in 1982. It was the Featherweight in the 30-06. Deadly accurate (1" or less three shot groups at 100yds. using Remington Core-Lokt 150 gr. ammo) and reliable. I gave it to my son last year since he needed a good deer rifle and where I live now, my Marlin 30-30 is sufficient due to limited visibility. I have had numerous bolt action rifles in numerous calibers, but nothing compared to the accuracy and smooth operation of that Winchester.

Great content , nice review ! You thoroughly covered it in detail .
I have the model 70 featherweight chambered in .280 Remington and it’s every bit of what you described here in workmanship, fit and finish and quality materials. Buttery smooth action , and the particular rifle that I got has an exquisite and rare select grade walnut stock ( I scoured the internet until I found a distributor that sent me actual photos of the rifle before I purchased it , as I’m very particular about the wood grain ) as well as the .280 Remington in itself is an extremely rare chambering for the model 70 rifle . Winchester did a limited production run of .280’s back in the early 1960’s , and those few rifles flew off the shelves. And now around 2015-2016 they did another very limited production run of these .280 Remington’s and I did not hesitate to grab this one as I mentioned, it’s a beautiful specimen with the select walnut stock with Fluer de Lis checkering and schnabel fore end .
And so I stumbled upon this video today while gathering information about the Supergrade model 70 , because I spotted a used one at my local dealer chambered in .264 Winchester Magnum ( it’s pre owned , considered used , but it’s still brand new in the box never been fired yet … someone bought it , never fired it and traded it in for something else ) so I just may go back and pick it up tomorrow. It’s gorgeous 😍

Beautiful rife,an American icon,i have the privilege of owning 3 of these rifles,my first one i purchased new around 1991 in .338 win mag XTR,one of the last post 64 push feed bolt action sportier that is able to shoot 1 moa. The other is in 270 win sportier also push feed bolt action made around 1977 according to the serial number, again able to shoot 1 moa which i purchased second hand,a well care for rifle by the first owner all credit to them. The 3rd one i have purchased 7 months ago new, this one in super grade in 3006 controlled round feed bolt action again will shoot 1 moa, again such a well made beautiful rifle all of them in amercian walnut stock, all 3 of them are so well balanced and so easy to shoot even though they are all high power big calibre rifles they are comfortable to shoot including the .338 win mag which is a big kicker by any standard, lets say id rate them up around a Sako in the same calibre for shooting and build quality as ive used Sako and i know thats saying alot, there will some out there that may disagree and thats ok but im going by my own experience on this one,all i can say is i now know why Jack O'connor championed the model 70. Last but not lest,if its good enough for Carl Hathcock its more then good enough for me,made since 1936 and still been made, the riflemans rifle, that says it all in my book buy the way fantastic review, ill be subscripting, peace out, happy safe hunting to you all from Victoria Australia

I have the all Weather SS model. To me once you own one of these new production Winchester model 70's, you become spoiled. Once you find a load that they like you got sub MOA accuracy all day everyday. The only complaint I have with mine regarding factory ammo is they are very picky eaters. If you run regular cup and core your groups open up. Winchester model 70's like premium or match grade ammunition. They are like a Cadillac. I'd compare Winchester model 70 to Sako 85 or Weatherby mk.V! They are in that category. Sort of like MAC, Matco and Snap-on tools.

Pay attention to shot show, this is where they tend to show what models are getting made for the year and any one off varieties. You'll have to put in an order through your local browning dealer, as these sell well and don't stay on the shelf for very long. The Alaskan, is a hell of a rifle. Heavy when a scope is added but it's extremely well built and accurate. I've only ever seen a handful on store shelves in Canada. So got to act fast, or put in a bit of waiting while an order is brought in.

"Don't it always seem to go, 'you don't know what you've got till it's gone?'" Back in the 60s when Winchester was still making the original Model 70 everyone raved about them. "The rifleman's rifle" it was called but few actually owned one. When Winchester stopped making them in 1963 they had only sold less than 700,000. Winchester was losing money on each gun made as they had with the Model 52, and the old Model 94. The Model 52 was dropped and the Model 94 revamped. People back then didn't like the Mauser-style claw extractor. It looked old-fashioned and clunky. Remington had one on their model 30 which was based on the M1917 Enfield. When Remington brought out the model 700 in 1962 people forgot about the Model 70. The 700 had no controlled feed claw extractor. It looked modern and sleek, and it was cheap. I paid $279 for my first M700. Remington's owner, DuPont had the money to buy the latest manufacturing equipment. Remington turned the receivers on automatic lathes from cheap round stock. The parts were polished in vibratory tumblers instead of hand-polishing. One-coat sprayed-on polyurethane finishes were cheaper than multiple coats of hand-rubbed oil. The Model 70 was made the old-fashioned 1930s way, skilled machinists milled an 8lb bar stock billet down to a 2lb 6oz receiver in over 80 steps. At the same time Ruger was making their M77 from even cheaper castings. Only John Olin's money kept Winchester in business but that wouldn't last forever. A 1979 machinists strike nearly put the company under. When he died a couple years later the Olin family sold the factory to Winchester management as US Repeating Arms. They tried using modern methods and new equipment to save the company but the new Model 70 was never accepted despite being a fine rifle. The gun writers damned it with faint praise because they hated that the old model was dropped. That ultimately killed the company. USRA brought the old model 70 back in 1992 in an attempt to satisfy critics and save the company but they went under in 2006 anyway. I'm glad FN still makes them. Winchester was the one American gunmaker that Europeans considered equal to their own premium brands. The Model 70 was very popular abroad. I have a 1976 new Model 70 and a 1996 old Model 70. Both are fine rifles and I'm glad I got them.

Such beautiful rifles. I just wish, for me, they were a little lighter. 8.2lbs and scope, sling, ammo it will add up to 10+ lbs

I don’t think that’s too bad at 10lbs. Helps with recoil if anything. My 14.5” BCM AR15 is 9lbs all said and done. Irons, red dot, light with pressure switch, sling, full mag. It definitely adds up. My AR10 is 12lbs with a full mag in it and all the stuff on it.

These new models are not, repeat not, the gun we call "post 64 Model 70". Those were completely different in bolt design, still the "Tilden" three position safety, still the simple elegant 1950's trigger, but no control feed, a simple extractor (set into the bolt face), hideous wood, shiny finishes made of plastic, white line spacers, etc. etc. The saving grace was that they shot quite well. You have a nice, modern machine, with about a tenth the hand fitting the pre-64 rifle carried. If Winchester had kept making that hand made gun, they would be something we talk about in the past tense!

    • @martyphillips83
      @martyphillips83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

These new models ARE just like the pre ‘64 with the exception of the trigger.
They absolutely ARE a control round feed Mauser action, as you can clearly see in the video.
The rifles you’re referring to are the push feed models Winchester produced for a short while, which weren’t as good as the pre ‘64. They were still far superior to a Remington 700, they just weren’t the classic control feed that Winchester fans had come to love, so they shifted production to the Miroku factory in Portugal and started making them in control round feed again.
I’d wager that a brand new Miroku produced M70 will outshoot a pre ‘64 any day of the week.

These modern model 70's are produced by FN herstal in Portugal, and they make good stuff. I'll take the modern metallurgy and modern machining over a hand fit pre 64 any day.
