- In 2020, at the beginning of the Covid lockdowns, my local Ottawa IPMS chapter decided to hold a group build over the May long weekend. The point of the build was simple -- this was a "Blitz Build" in which we had to complete the entire build, paint, and weathering over the course of the long weekend (Friday 6PM to Monday end-of-day).

You achieved something I thought was impossible, all the while keeping the result very much presentable! Would you do something like this again, or was it one of those "once is more than enough" experiences?

Thank you Martin! I'm always happy yo see you comment on my work. I'm not sure I would do this again...maybe something similar with a deadline of two weeks or 10 days or something instead of 3.25 days. I think once was enough since it did show me what I can do to streamline my builds, but it also wasn't as satisfying as other projects since it also taught me what effects (that are missing on this build) are important, such as more mud texture and more effort on spare track weathering. I don't like to finish a project and not me 100% satisfied, and with this project I'm only about 90%.
This is THE best video on painting not only the winter effects but also general painting techniques. I loved the printed notes summary on the top of the screen detailing the materials use, thinning ratios & PSI. I learned so much, brilliant work. Thanks so much from Down Under.
That was cool to see you cruising through the painting and weathering essentials! I like this style, a reduced and almost pure take on the hobby, where some of the "must have" steps are eliminated, like the clear coat and so on. Reminds be a bit of good old Reinhold Messner, who reached the peak of Mount Everest all by himself and without oxygen tanks. He said that this was only possible because if his "lightweight alpine style", where he focused only on the essentials he could carry alone, not relying on a team of helpers and fancy technology. I am sure that a lot of modellers will find this highly interesting and maybe worth of giving it a try, in order to find out what can be achieved with "less".

I've enjoyed your videos for years but haven't posted a comment until now. You did a beautiful job with that model and have provided a helpful lesson to both beginners and experienced modelers about how to create something really nice by focusing on the fundamentals. Obsessing over minutiae and trying a lot of different techniques and products can be fun, but at the end of the day, that's not necessary at all to make something nice and have fun doing it. @@Panzermeister36 I really like the way your construct and edit your videos: they're clear and instructive and well designed as teaching tools. And the models always look great! A question for you: if you were to do another quick painting/weathering job on a model where chipping wasn't needed/appropriate, what fundamentals would you focus on in lieu of that?

I'm working on the sd.kfz 251 that I want to finish in a winter camouflage. Your tips will come in handy. I always seem to go too heavy on the hairspray. I'll ease off now to get a smaller chipping effect as you pointed out. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Ralph! Also consider trying less water in the damp brush when doing the chipping...if you soak the area with water it can also chip too heavily. A lightly damp brush should be more than sufficient.

Hell yeah. That’s my approach to painting models. If it’s fun and looks cool to you then go for it. Some people enjoy being hyper realistic and that’s totally cool but sometimes a little color relief is in order.

@@Panzermeister36 My second model kit was the old Tamiya stug 4 witch I did not like because of it being a old and bad fit.
I really enjoyed that quicker fast paced weathering chipping & mud effects, The white wash was really realistic as well and I think that you did an amazing job on it as all your videos do you motivate me to try new things and learn techniques thank you for the dedication!

Well, I don't airbrush.. so I'm stuffed. I'll just have to admire ..from afar!! Still, it has given me some ideas for the future and I now know of a few more weathering products I had not come across before.. so that's all good. And your model is fantastic... :)

I know I'm 2 years late, but great video Evan! I would definitely love to see more use of oils as after having a disaster with enamels I now only use Abteilung 502 oils and pigments for weathering. Thing I'm going to have a try at doing a winter camo on my Tamiya Churchill VII now. Although, I may take a little longer. 😅

You did a nice job on the Tiger, and I'll give your methods a try on my latest, a BT-5, risen from the Shelf of Doom. I like the chipping method, it makes realistic effect, looking at some of the old construction equipment just down the road. One thing that wasn't really great was that all the PE bits are floating on top of the zimmerit. But it would take a lot of time to mark the spots and then use a chisel or cutting bit on the paste. Well done, a super Tiger. It isn't easy but I've done the same building display models for the long defunct Hobbycraft company. Strictly OOB, the only thing they'd allow was masking tape belts. One Friday after work, I picked up two of them that had to be done by Monday before noon.Thankfully they were a USAAF P-36 and P-40, so OD over grey. I could shoot both of them at the same time, saved a bit.
Thanks for the comment! I hope what you learned from my video helps you out on your BT-5. Yes, if I had much more time I would have made the tool clamps look more like they were applied first and then zimmerit around them. But for the weekend blitz build I had to skip some of these details :)
Thanks for this video, I’ve now watched it a few times. I’m building a Bolt action late Tiger I in a winter wash. I’ve been out of the game for a while so it’s been a steep learning curve with all the available paint and weathering products. I guess the biggest take always are what you said about not sweating over the details and H. B’s lightweight alpine style comment. I know there’s still lots for me to learn, so thanks for making it make sense. ps. Hello from the west coast, and yes it is raining again…
Another helpful video - I plan to practice your weathering techniques on an old Tamiya Stu III. I did a fine build and paint job but it needs better weathering.
That's an amazing model, it looks very realistic. I've been building models for years and I'm still trying to achieve a model with that type of detail and yet you did it in 24 hours! You are a modelling master thanks for sharing your knowledge with us mere mortals.

oh sweet i ddint know VMS oil enhansing medium was a thinner, i always thought you needed to add it with actual enamel thinners. thank you now i know i dont need enamel thinners as well!

amazing looking model even more so in the time scale, i used to use talcum powder mixed with humbrol dark earth many many years before all of todays texture paints to simulate mud build up
I do my decals this way with vallejo and Ak paints and nothing happens with the micro sol! Never ever had an issue and actually look better when they melt into the paint than the varnish I think! I'll never use a gloss varnish before I do decals no need to!
I just bought a tub of the AK washable agent today to try with the greens for a t34! I want to experiment with more colour's for worn and faded paints with it than just white wash! Ibe seen someone use it on a t34 in my club the effects were amazing
I'm currently in the middle of this build myself. Been started and stopped a couple times because of a move, but still one of my favorite tanks. The Porsche turret just looks better than the Henschel ( even if it wasn't actually better ).
I agree completely...the curves of the initial turret style look so cool!

If you have AKs washable paint just spray that on through your airbrush it flakes off like you would have worn effects or hairspray under it! It's like a chalkboard agent it just picks and flakes off when dry or if you wet it as you would with worn effects chipping fluids! It cuts out the hairspray etc then you can thin some and go back over with a brush giving the painted on rough field applied paint! What white did you use for the white wash? It looks more the ivory cremwiess AK has than the pure white but looks good makes it look old!

The King Tiger particularly was genius over a w/ end , though twas a pity you didn't stop before the Winter white- wash , haven't seen one yet that didn't look like dog's breakfast 🥞, but that's just me , my tank would have been in the car wash twice a week , with a sheet over it !
Now my ? - for a newly minted Aeronautical engineer , I have just built the Hobby Boss version of the King Tiger and while the turret swivels around there are no slots to slip into the upper deck .

I have a question, if you have time, I want to put an half-track pulling a canon in Russian winter, do you think that there is a way to give the feeling of cold to the model? I was thinking of a blueish grey as pin-wash.
Also I'm thinking about leaving the tracks area rather clean (except for snow and a few oil stains), as the ground was probably like permafrost, without mud. What do you think? Thank you for your great videos👋🏻

It´s just, I think your skills could´ve let to even better results if you didn´t made yourself so much pressure with the timeframe. Especially considering this nowadays rare kit.
One question: Do you usually cover the model with clear varnish once it´s finished, to protect all the weathering?
I´m thinking of coming back to the hobby. I began modelling as a kid and started using an airbrush as a young teenager. Then came girls, beer and motorcycles...
I mostly built aircraft, and as a student I came back to the hobby for a brief period building a couple of 1/48 scale ac. Nothing too fancy but a bit of drybrushing and washing. That was 20 years ago.
Now I want to get into 1/35 armour and maybe also 1/350 ships.
My old airbrush is pretty messed up. It is a bottom feed Badger then sold by Revell. Now I figured out that the replacement parts would cost me more than a complete middle class AB.
Can you recommend any cheap to middle prized gravity feed AB?
Just for getting back into modelling, I mean if I stick to the hobby, I can always restore the old Badger or getting a high-end gravity feed one.
Any answer is much appreciated, I will watch your tutorials in the meantime! And also uncle Nightshift whom I recently discovered and who led me to your greta channel.

Very nice job. Particularly, given the time constraints. I just recently got some AMMO/Mig Washable White. Not too much of a fan of water based (prefer Tamiya), but; I am going to give it a try. Supposedly it is not as opaque. Going to try it on a Panzer III I have going.

Im one of those "weirdo's" who likes the rounded front of the so called Porsche turret better than the Henschel turret. That is a good lookin tank.

Very well done. Just a comment. I am no armour expert but I think some modelers may stress on the accuracy of field camouflage. If you remember the context in which it was applied, between fighting in the field, I suspect the chance of any two tanks being the same was next to nil.
I know, I just based the camouflage on other vehicles of the same unit as per the photos. I photos I posted are of a few different vehicles and the camouflage looks similar enough. Usually there is a pattern the whole unit aims for to have some semblance of unity, despite obvious variations.

Always watch your videos, so good. I have a question as I can't remember, can you add pigments with a fixer after sealing the paintwork with a satin varnish. Sorry to trouble. you..
Hello John. Yes, you can lock in the pigments with a "fixer", and typically you would do that before a varnish as the vanish would otherwise blow away pigments. The fixer will help to hold them in place.
If you already sealed your model before the pigments, and then you've locked the pigments on with a fixer, then you probably don't need the final vanish. The fixer should hold them on.
I hope this makes sense. If not, let me know and I can try to explain better.
Looks great. Have you had the chance to compare the hairspray chipping effect when using actual hairspray versus one if the chipping mediums offered by various companies? I've only used the latter

Very interesting video and learnt a lot - looking at your mixing ratios do you always thin with 80% tamiya thinner 20% paint
It will depend on the exact situation. Generally my paint-thinner ratio will be between 40% paint/60% thinner and 20% paint/80% thinner. Some bottles of Tamiya paint are thicker than others, and depending on what airbrush I'm using, the compressor settings, the humidity of the air, how fine the camouflage pattern is....I will have to fine-tune the mix somewhat.

I generally build after everything is assembled. Of course if I have an interior then it might be a little different because you have to paint it beforehand.

New model builder here. I really want to try the hairspray chipping but i don't have an airbrush and i haven't seen an acrylic spray paint in US olive drab. Could i still make it work with acrylic top layer over an enamel base layer using a normal brush?
The hairspray chipping technique does not work well with brush-applied paint. The top layer has to be thin and applied dry, which is easy with the airbrush. If you're brushing it on, you'll start activating the hairspray when applying the paint which will become a gummy mess. You only want to activate the hairspray when chipping it, later.
If you're using brush painting techniques, instead I would suggest sponge chipping for a similar result.

i always love building armor but only started recently been an auto modeler for 30 plus years. i struggle with and have over ten kits painted and waiting to weather. every time i try to weather it seams like every inch is chipped and that’s not even weathered. so how does one do a project and weather it but not crazy just make it look used with maybe some light scratches. basically not a toy
Hello Keith. If you're having trouble with applying too much chipping to the vehicle, maybe try the following: rather than applying chipping in one area at a time, lets say chipping all around one hatch, instead try applying a couple of chips to one area, then move to another area, and then another, and so on. Basically, build up the chipping in small areas over the whole vehicle, rather than focusing on one area. This way, you will be able to control it much better and build it up more slowly/evenly over the vehicle.

I might. The more I see about that kit, the more I am depressed. I was excited at first but now Das Werk said they will not add the tread pattern texture on the fenders. I can't understand why not....that has been the standard since the 1970s in 1/35th scale, so why not in 1/16 today? And the detail is poor for the large scale as the engineering is the same as the 1/35 Takom kit, just scaled up.
@@Panzermeister36 Hah. you are right. that's odd. especially given the texture is there on the takom kit. Still, a pretty easy fix for the photo-etch or even decal people.

How are those track links on the left side of the hull attached? It’s obviously not an official location because there is already a shovel there so I’m confused as to how they would be held in place (given that they are pretty weighty).
Tack welding was pretty standard. Or some pegs/hooks would be welded on to hang them from.
Where did you get the VMS Oil Expert thinner? The Hobby Centre doesn't have any listed on their website inventory. It looks like they sometimes have the Mig Ammo Starship Filth (just currently out of stock), but they don't have any VMS stuff listed...
At the time I started using VMS, I don't think there were any places selling it apart from VMS themselves. But nowadays there are some places that sell it in North America. Michigan Toy Soldier I believe has it.

I noticed you used lacquer thinner and not Tamiya X-20A acrylic thinner when thinning Tamiya acrylic paints. Any specific reason?
The lacquer thinner makes the paint spray much more smoothly and produces a more durable finish 👍
Is black primer the same as ordinary black paint!?
No, it's primer so it sticks onto the surface better and will fill small gaps and other imperfections. It also provides a surface that the following paint will hold onto better.
Where are you finding the VMS stuff in Canada?
Not finding it at all here at the moment. You'll have to get it from the USA.
