  • In an incident recorded three different times in the synoptic Gospels, Jesus is accused of casting out demons by Beelzebul. In all accounts, Beelzebul is said by the accusers of Jesus to be the “prince of the demons”, and even to be in possession of Him. But, Beelzebul is not mentioned anywhere else in the Bible. Who is it and where did it come from? Corie Bobechko explores.

How can this judgment be? They only had to see, hear, and open themselves up to learn that He is truly the Son of God for as others have said, How can a sinner do such works as these?

This doesn’t explain where the name came from.
It all started when the Israelites launched their war on the Canaanite pagans, they started going from city to city, desecrating the ancient gods, calling them names, burning down villages and cities.
Baal Zebul was the god of the Canaanite city of Ekron. When the Jews arrived to Ekron, they called their god Baal Thubab (Lord of the flies, in other words, the god is excrement that Canaanites hover around him like flies).
So from Baal Thubab to Beelzebub. That’s where the name came from.
