Sinead’s version is alright, but when Cait sings “I'll stay beside you and I'll never leave..Or tell you all those lies you'd never believe” it’s like she’s grabbing and shaking your soul.
Perhaps a controversial opinion: Sinead’s version is ruined by Shane (the song is meant to be sung by a female voice, imo). But yeah, this is Cait’s song and it’s an absolute gem.
Sinead got better vocals and that version is just more pop. If it was an actual song her and Shane made built that chemistry then you wouldn't be saying this.

It's rare because Cat left the band after recording it. It was the result of the gradual falling out between Shane and Elvis Costello that started during Rum, Sodomy... Guess he won. Lol. Anyway the Cat pressings were few . Later it was recorded with Sinead who did a tremendous job too. But the original 12' is still the best .
No Shane in this one, in spite of the “Shane McGowan & Kait O’Riordan”billing. Maybe he was supposed to be there? Or just wasn’t on his feet. Great vocals from Kait O’Riordan as always, but falls completely flat with no Shane. They probably should’ve waited for him, it could have been magical once he finished puking. I believe you're mistaken. Shane McGowan & the Pope's rerecorded the song with Sinead O'Connor for The Snake. This 'rare' version with the Pogues (Cait on vocals) is on the Sid and Nancy Soundtrack.
The only thing Shane McGowan had to do with this video is he wrote it. The original song was on the Sid and Nancy soundtrack with the music played by the Pogues, sung by Shane McGowan and Sinead O'Connor. Not this one.

I believe you're mistaken. Shane McGowan & the Pope's rerecorded the song with Sinead O'Connor for The Snake. This 'rare' version with the Pogues (Cait on vocals) is on the Sid and Nancy Soundtrack.
Sinéad's version is haunting ... and beautiful ... But Caitlin's is full of power and anger ... love both ... but Caitlin's ... better...
Cait was convinced Declan McManus was more important than her own career... She was by far better than anything that arselicker ever did.
