How-To Replace the Rear Hub Oil Seal on Dodge Ram

    Sorry for the poor audio in the last 2 minutes of the video.
    After noticing a puddle of oil at the rear wheel on the cement where my truck was parked, it was evident that there was a leak. The leak was coming from the rear hub oil seal so I tore into it to replace the seal. With a little bit of time and some basic tools and knowledge, it's fairly easy to replace the seal. Watch the video for a complete run through on how to replace the seal.
    What you'll need:
    Basic tools
    New Seal
    RTV Gasket Maker (Orange)
    Brake Clean or other supplies for cleaning surfaces
    Gear Oil (only a little bit)
    After installing the new seal, I like to park on a slight hill for a few minutes to let oil run back into the hub. After driving for some time, make sure that the new seal is not leaking and periodically check for oil around the hub area.

    Bravo! I like the video. Short, easy to follow and no horrific music playing in the background. Bonus points for not pulling out some 37/94ths 17 point dealer only special socket designed to mate to a serialized dealer only torque wrench.
    My 12 2500 needs a new rear seal according to the oil change shop. Seeing you do it in your driveway gives me hope of doing the same. After that I will move on to replacing the entire front end steering assembly, replacing the steering box seals, a full tranny service and replacing the exhaust manifold bolts that snapped off... again.
    Every day I walk out of the house and see yet another puddle of fluid under this truck. It makes me hope that it would catch fire or be struck by lightning and go away. Then I put it in 4wd or load something stupidly heavy in it I cant help but love it all over again.

    Great video. Very helpful Thank you. My whole seal stayed on the axle when I took of the drum hub. I tapped off the seal. The new seal I tapped in the hub but if I pull it real hard by hand I can pull it out. Is that normal? How tight should that seal be in there? Thanks

      Thanks for watching. You shouldn't be able to pull the seal out by hand. It's a pretty tight fit.

      The guy in this video works at a dealership and says many times you can pull them out with your hand and demonstrates at :45 seconds into the video. th-cam.com/video/byqsXX0xBog/w-d-xo.html
      When I did mine, I was able to pull the old ones out by hand. And given the price of the seals and the way they’re designed, I bought the tool he uses in the video to install the new ones.

    When pulling the seal out you should get the right tool such as a seal puller or screw some small sheet metal self tapping screws in and pulling with some pliers instead of potential hurting the mating surface with a punch and hammer.

    Would this be the same thing wrong with my 2012 2500 Cummins 4x4 I wonder? Gear oil all over the inside side wall of my tire, pretty bad

    Tip. To get oil to the bearing drive the truck into a steep ditch and let the oil gravity feed over to the dry bearings. Then you know for sure you have plenty of oil in the hub.

      I think your right. Theres only 1 seal in The rear. I think i messed up and thought there was 2. Cuz it came off in 2 pices. Ha.

      @@jimedwards9310 thats why it was leaking.you get crap,stones dirt,ect,sitting on back of seal,like if driving thru mud holes,long dirt roads,,,,it wears on rear of seal causing it to fail.not much to prevent this except clean truck thouro,after every trip,or at least check..i inspect,& re grease whole truck after every trip,doing this you notice what it what.regular maintenance pays.plus swing off or jerk all links,up down side to side..a mate showed me a trick for bad wheel bearings,on there way out,,jack up vehicle,grab coil,spin tyre,if you feel vibration,its bad.like stiking ear on train line, same principal.&,dont EVER,judge the tightness of bearings,keep a note somewhere,best way for them to fail,too loose/tight..a 2" torque wrench is a good all round bar.

    You can't see if the seal is going in straight if you cover it with a towel. Just blow it out or brake cleaner after tapping it in... Leave the rims off and jack up the other side, you don't have to pre lube. Good video tho

    What was the torque spec and why didnt you say to mark where the nut is in the beginning of the video, not after we remove it

      I'm not sure off hand what the torque spec is. Marking the nut is not mandatory but it can be helpful...I suppose it was an afterthought for me. Thanks for watching.

      @@AdventureRig the torque spec is 22 ft lbs at the hub nut then back off 30 degrees-his method worked but as a mechanic i prefer to use the proper socket and a torque wrench-but for a diy guy his method will do

      It's had about 65,000 miles put on it since this replacement and I've not had any other issues.

      Kenneth Beard No, the oil in the differential lubricates them. Make sure to park on a side hill after replacing the bearing so oil makes its way over to that side prior to driving.

      yes,you can,depends if you have lsd,grease could stop it working.if diff is mechanical locker/lsd,doesnt matter,but,make sure you drive in circles to get the oil to the left or right bearing before doing long strait trips.

    Had my repair shop replace the oil seal and install new brake pads. They also installed new rotors which I didn't order and they didn't tell me about. That added $259.00 dollars to my bill and I was pissed about that. The existing rotors were in perfect shape. When I complained they said the old rotors were out of specs.
    Not true, I had the truck inspected by a DOT certified mechanic as part of an annual FMCSA inspection and the pads needed replacing but the rotors were OK. In watching the video I now see the mechanic was just too lazy to pull the old seal and bearing OR he damaged the seal seat when taking it out.
    What a bunch of lazy and incompetent mechanics we have today. I'd have done it myself but I don't have a garage so I have to work in the street and the temps were in the 20"s.

      I'm not sure the exact model but it's a Milwaukee 3/4'' impact. I love it and have used it a ton.

      never use impact to loosen or torque any nut,!!.lazy way,will break studs,cross thread,come loose if not correct tight.i allways break with wheel brace,torque back with my elbow.!.NEVER,had a problem.45 yrs..

    nice concrete,or at least it was,my missus would tear my 3 yr old head off for doing that,.allways carry a cheap tarp,has a mirriad of uses,.that said,,i dont have concrete to work on,just a shit load of dirt.hence,tarps..never undo nuts with an impact wrench.&,on every nut you take off,use never sieze.that seal probably failed because of crap wearing on it from behind,mud,dirt roads,you could possibly put like a rope seal glued behind it,but,if it traps dirt,same prob..or at least wash there regular.the design is like a ramp to the seal,not good dodge,.good vid,bit backyardy,like me,but i clean,paint & torque,everything i take off/fit..ive just converted 2 dana 44,rs to 8 stud.one on a cut to swb, 1975 highboy,other on my bronco,solid axle front locker,lsd d60 rear.

    Ive seen other vids for a dually dodge show actually packing the bearings vice the gear oil? any comments.
    Yeah I thought so too. Here's what the folks said from the website. Now I don't know which way to go.th-cam.com/video/OBPCyk28BaU/w-d-xo.html
    So the reason we pack the bearings is when you drive off for the first 20 or so miles the diff fluid is trying to make its way out to the hubs. So it is always best practice to pack all bearing so you don’t burn anything up. It will dissolve with the diff fluid when it heats up.
    Makes sense but..
