The rattles are maddening...I had an 81 GS1100EX the hub blew one of bvb the springs out and it lodged between the oil pump drive gears...the pump housing got cracked as well...ok...new hub oil pump and 750 drive gears...wavy lock ring or washer to keep slop outta that area...(very hard to do...GORILLA CLUTCH HUBS IN CALIF USA HAS HUBS If...they are still in business)it solved the sloppy thrust spring issues...good luck... AZ nd I have been looking for my old bike...last I heard...my ex wife's youngest got it...did a wheelie...loosing it and crashed it I hope he is ok...(but that's the price you pay for being a jerk...)
I feel like such a tit that I didn't check that before re-installing my undercut transmission. My 1052 doesn't clack but jug-a-jugs at idle. & now its starting a squeak in the lower end. So much for 5 months of slow work & nearly 1.5k in parts :(
Peter - well I am in the process of switching the clutch over with another one from another GS1100 that I have and I haven't finished it yet. I am not convinced about the needle roller bearing being the problem. Both of my clutches have play in them and I know for sure that one bike only had 15K miles on it as I have had it from new and it still has play on it. I think it is within tolerance. What I am beginning to think it might be (apart from the obviously loose springs on the backplate) is that the shim or spacer that supports the clutch outer hub is slightly too wide and the noise can be eliminated by machining this part down slightly. I am sure you are aware of the GS Resources (www.gsresources.com) forum. I have seen this mentioned somewhere on there before. Also make sure it is not your cam chain that is rattling. Greetings Richard suzukigs1100.blogspot.co.uk/
I'ok check that shim issue. But replacing the springs on the backplate made mega mega difference on mine bike. Most of the rattle came from those loose springs. It is really worth changing them
Did you have to cut the rivets off, put new springs in and have it welded back up? Where did you get the springs? I can't find them listed anywhere. Greetings Richard
I got a repair set. All springs in the set were same compared to factory default 3soft and 3harder. + the replacement rivets are wider in diameter à bit. Since the backplate is extremely hardened I have not redrilled biger holes, I have used old ones, just welded them to the backplate. The kit came from UK, got it from eBay.
I got the kit + new ignition from this guy. Might drop him a mail. item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/seller?cmd=SELLER&sellerId=suzukiperformancespares&itemId=360589347280

Probably had a lot of wear because the bike was very old and you should have replaced the clutch ..
What are these wavy washers you speak of?

have you fixed it as well? :) my hub had the same play, so I have changed the needle roller bearing, though have not helped much.
