Awesome work! Thank you for the help with wiring and branch selection. The hardware store ficus from last week is bouncing back in new soil plus defoliation
Also If you guys notice J does about a 45 degree turn each spin of the wire. Kinda like using it as a handle and covering 1/4 of the branch each turn. Super helpful for maintaining control and proper spacing

Lyle Miyashiro you can do a slip potting but you can’t touch the roots this time of the year. Deciduous trees are repotted in spring as new foliage is pushing

Hello. Thank you for the Tutorial. How long do you keep the wires on a tree usually? I guess the main idea is thst the wire does not start to bite into the tree, but is there like a rule of thumb? And what does it depend on? Tree species?

Is this only possible to do during winter when it looses its leaves or any time?
Whats up jerome love the videos especially when its a specie of tree i have. Question i live in n.y. and put my elm in a shed for the winter then this spring it was booming and all of a sudden by june maybe all of the leaves started turning yellow and falling off . There some foilage still there but its having a hard time budding out again. Any ideas? I used to dig around and put fertilizer in but no more i lay it on top. Fertilizer was 20 -11- 11 . I went to biogold now

How long will the wire have to stay in place?
My Elm still has it's green leaves in december, I imagine it's been raised in a warmer climate or maybe kept indoors for it's entire life. Am I ok to defoliate it like you mentioned and can I transition it to an outdoor bonsai so I can enjoy the leaves changing colour etc. or do I need to acclimatise it first?
Also I was wondering if they make ok Jin or Shari?
Hey Warren, good questions! Elms usually keep their leaves green the longest; my American elm is still green and is outdoors. I won't defoliate it this time of the year if it hasn't done it on its own. You can transition your tree to the outdoor environment to enjoy the fall colors. However, you want to do it gradually. Move it outdoors in the Spring, so it gets to acclimate to the outdoor world. Most likely, you won't get great fall colors the first year, but the following year you should be getting great fall colors.

I want to grow a back branch on my chinese elm. What Technics can I use? How long do we have to keep the wire so that the branches holds on to its place?
Hey Refayet, you could try a thread graft. You could also try to defoliate in either early spring before the tree starts to actively grow or in the summer dormancy. When defoliating, you get a lot of new branches all over the tree
Bjorn Bjornholm says by partially defoliating a tree it creates more bud back and that fully defoliating can cause inner branches to die. Lots of bonsai advice is different, do you feel it’s safe to fully defoliate? Have you ever lost branches from it?
That really depends on specie, climate, and stage of development. The Chinese Elm has an odd growth habit, and by defoliating you get the tree up and moving. Just take a look at how strong it came back.

hi im new to bonsai i got a chinese elm 2 months ago cut off wha i dint want now i have lots of new green branches looking better than when i got it well happy but theres a old branch i dont want its march in the uk is it saft to cut
Hey Scott, It is safe to cut the branch off as long as all the new growth has hardened and turned to wood.
