That's a really cool look into the history of Spyderco and the evolution of knives in general. 🤘

My favorite old Spyderco is the Viele from like 1988, I still have two, one with serrations and one strait blade. They came in AUS 8 and carbon fiber scales.

can probably just touch up the serrations with a tapered ceramic rod

Yeah I sharpen serrations. You can either use a round file like you said, for stuff like bread knives where all the serrations are identical I prefer a CBN wheel on a half speed bench grinder, but for the average person I really think the best way to sharpen those is to get a kit like the CRKT Veff field sharpener that is actually round and not tapered. Following the advice of Dr Vadim, tapered rods do work but will eventually either elongate the serrations or change the angle depending on how you use it.
For those larger serrations, ceramic honing rods work really well too. Just keep in mind that serrated blades are typically single bevelled so you can only work up a burr from one side, then you need something softer like leather, a wire brush or scotchbrite to work the burr back and forth until it eventually lets go.
A third option is to simply sharpen the back (flat) side of the blade and ignore the serrations completely. Obviously this will only work so many times before new serrations needs to be cut into it, but it is a viable way to doing it.

First! The friend of mine has carried only this knife for many years. He even added some cool laser engraving but ultimately, lost this knife.

KME has a tapered rod for their fixed angle sharpeners. I own it, have not used it yet.

I have many Spydercos especially Police models. That's not a 1984 the original said P.I.G on the blade I have one and been carrying a 1992 everyday since 1996 fully serrated and still a beast. Your ats55 would be circa with that clip makes yours a 1997
