Yeah, I’m a stick in the mud but, I learned high speed at a highway patrol school and we lost points whenever we touched a line. I have driven on racetracks, I have driven my Porsche on the back of the dragon, so I have a small bit of knowledge about performance driving. Everyone wants to follow the racing line of a road and it’s tempting to use all of the pavement. Your racing line is restricted to your lane. Learn to stay in it and be a better driver. Glad no one was hurt in the off road excursion.
I slid my right half off the road and side swiped the small ditch a little ways after the first overlook (Walker mountain) driving north. Car was fine except for assorted scrapes across the lower side (now it looks like i drive against curbs lol), a small crack in the front fender and the dismemberment of the front lip. It happened in those tight repeated bends, I wasn't going fast but I knew as soon as I rounded the corner and saw how sharp it was. The curve was much closer, sharper, steeper than anticipated, and to boot it was especially shaded so the corner itself was damp compared to the rest. I was spoiled (rightfully) by other roads having plentiful warning signs, this caught me off guard too. I slowed before hitting the curve, let off the brake, took the curve only sliding near the end of it. Went to a local body shop for an inspection, the owner was great and also told me that road is quite notorious for damage. This was all after my tour driving six gap, 129 + dragon in the rain, then 28. All things considered I got extremely lucky, but I do wonder if I shouldve handled that situation differently? Ill be back one day, but its definitely the most dangerous road I've driven. If its going to carry the "dragon" name, it should be clearly labeled as the evil brother.... or maybe Im biased because I haven't seen the rest.
Love the detail in your comment. Thanks for taking the time to tell your story. The story you tell about being the corner being just a bit tighter, and steeper, and more slippery than expected is probably what gets most people that go off - caught out. Doubt that many people are bombing through the TOD if they don't have experience with that sort of thing, but in some ways, it is the experience that can catch you out. We've had some close calls lately where the road was wet when we didn't expect it due to a rain storm on the other side of a mountain. The water had almost evaporated off the road. It looked like normal dry pavement, but it wasn't. Fortunately, no harm done . . . but lesson learned. The trick is to remember these lessons the next time you get a clean run and the road calls you to push forward that much harder. Stay safe out there!
No risk we won’t! The front end was asked to do way more than the friction circle could give. The key is seeing the situation and taking action way before it gets to that point! Thanks for watching and commenting as always!
Cool road, twisty fun. Car might be lost, but that's better than being in the morgue. I could watch that road level cam all day. No maps or text inserts, or pedal cam, just asphalt & exhaust noises.
Thanks for the great comment. Cars can be replaced but not their drivers. I think a lot of people are liking the pavement cam! Thanks for the feedback!
Loved driving that section of RT16! Be carful and stay in your lane cause locals don’t! Also I would not recommend crashing. Saw 2 bikers having lunch at the same place we were at the southern end of BoD. They left before us and one crashed needing assistance. Local volunteer showing up dressed oddly ( tie-dye t-shirt, daisy dukes and work boots ) but in a fire truck were there starting to help them. Also if you plan to continue north on RT16 after Tazwell there are more awesome sections of road but they go though some of the worst poverty I have even seen in America. Didn’t know people lived that way. Also was concerned if I had an issue and had to stop in some of these unincorporated towns. No cell service and no local cops in many of the smal towns you roll though that are visibly struggling forgotten old coal towns. It took away enjoyment of the roads to see people struggling like that.
The country around Bluefield WV is scenic but yes also impoverished. The roads are great though - check out the Google map on the channel page for a link to all of our videos with locations! Appreciate the comment!
Wow that road looks amazing. The views on that first ridge look incredible. That really sucks the car was a total loss, but I'm glad the driver is OK. Nice 997's are getting harder to come by these days.
Thanks - great views for sure on BOD and sadly now there are less 997s! They say the 997 GT3 is one of the greatest GT cars Porsche made. Hope to try one someday!
Really enjoy watching these. The induction sound of the GTS 4.0 is magical. It looks like you’re bracing your leg against the center console and driver’s side door on some of the tighter stuff. Got a peek at the seat bolster and it doesn’t appear you’re running buckets, correct? Which seats do you have? And curious if you would do LWBs if you could re-order?
Good eye. Standard seats with manual adjustment. I had them in a previous car and went with what was familiar. I couldn’t try out the buckets when I ordered - but would consider and upgrade - depending on the long trip comfort factor. We do some long trips - and a lot of hours. Lots to consider!
A 997 will bite!! I had a 997.1 C2S and did the zig zag dance on an exit ramp showing it to off to a younger cousin along for the ride! I caught it by pushing the throttle (read:luck) and the cousin screamed and then said “do it again!”-Me: (shaking/trying to play it off) “I can’t do it too many times in one day” 😅
learned a lesson on those 997s. They handle rather poorly. I had a 997.2S and it was the worst autocross car I ever had. Either the front end was hopping around with understeer, or the back end was slewing around. And when the "death plow" starts, it uses a lot of road......
Thanks for watching! That’s the second comment along those lines. I wonder if other 997 drivers who push their cars (many don’t) also had that experience. Your “death plow” is on full display in the video. However, it shouldn’t have come to that - applying the brakes a second earlier would have done it - Appreciate the feedback, the watch, and hope to see you back here often. How does your current car compare?
@@trueview3127 many of the socal roads are much much higher speeds to get the same experience. East coast roads in Appalachian mountains you really aren’t exceeding the speed limit significantly for a reckless driving ticket like out west.

I'm assuming the lead car acted as a spotter to let others know if there was oncoming traffic but if they didn't the amount of double yellow crossings on a blind corner for all cars in the video was atrocious.
All cars have radios - and yes the lead car calls warning when there is traffic oncoming but as a rule - we stay in our lanes. I see the Red Cayman crossed on an inside corner with site lines but no other cars that I saw did. I will definitely mention it to him. @ArtVandelayOfficial that’s my rule as well - I won’t cross the lines. The camera car image on the Magic carpet portion of the video was moved left and right in the frame and that may have given the impression the 718 crossed. Good thread here. Thanks.
@@trueview3127you shouldn’t need to warn people about oncoming cars over the radio, if you need to do that you are driving beyond your limits and need to learn how to hold your lane 🤷🏼♂️
@jrz00 - on some of the tight stuff - if a truck has wide mirrors or a trailer - you definitely want to know that’s coming. It’s all about warning the trailing cars what is coming their way which is a good thing for sure. I hope your group does the same. Be safe out there. Check the video on VA 80 for example - that road is so tight that you want to know if anybody is coming because you probably need to cheat over to the edge of the lane.

Le chassis m030, de bons pneus, une bonne géométrie et la 997 est parfaite…
En 2004 (avec des pneus de 2004) la 997s tournait à 7:59sec au Nürburgring… posez-vous les bonnes questions.
Another great video! Red cayman over the yellow to many times though....
I will have a talk with him about that! Tends to happen in the tight corners when you can see across I’ve noticed, but good feedback! Cheers.
The red Cayman could use more camber.
Will let him know - we were just texting about his dropping a wheel off the right inside corner in the tight section!
I agree red Porsche was driving poorly and most likely above their pay grade.
You going to head out to SoCal to try those canyon roads?
That’s definitely the plan at some point in the future! Truck the cars West and then drive them back East hitting all the best roads on the way!
