  • With breathtaking views across Herne Bay, the architect designs a modern apartment that takes elements of suburban life and introduces them into apartment living. Allowing for an evolving brief, Artifact Property approached Monk Mackenzie to collaborate on a mixed-use development that positively contributed to Auckland’s built environment. Encompassing eight units in total - one commercial space, six apartments and a penthouse - Jervois Apartments is simple, elegant and timeless.
Due to the location of the site, the architect designs a modern apartment to fit a 33-metre length block that rises 15 metres above. Taking advantage of as much space as possible, the project uses the length of the site to its benefit and, in turn, offers occupants the opportunity to live spaciously. Sitting high on the ridgeline and facing north, each apartment has been cleverly planned out. From the façade, a winter garden deck with views of nature greets those who enter and sets the scene for what is to come. From this, a long view of the apartment imbues a similarity to the openness that suburban homes offer. Positioned at the southern end of the apartment, the street-facing bedrooms and private spaces offer a unique placement that defers from other apartment designs.
Monk Mackenzie and Artifact Property employed an interface between private and public domains with metalwork screens. By employing the screening on the façade, the exterior design offers varying degrees of transparency and opacity. Through this unique use of materials, the architect designs a modern apartment that offers a different experience from opposite sides of the building. From the bedroom, a direct sightline of the surrounding landscape is offered to the occupants through the screens, whilst from the street below, the façade strikes a wave-like form that seamlessly blends into the built environment.
At the north end of the apartments are the living and dining spaces, kitchen and enclosed deck where the occupants can sit outside during winter whilst being sheltered from the elements. Though Jervois Apartments sits on a narrow site, the architect designs a modern apartment that optimises space to create a spacious interior environment. In the kitchens, the incorporation of natural stone, oak and metal work into the material palette has been seamlessly styled together with Fisher & Paykel appliances - such as the vertical column fridge-freezer, wine fridge and ovens. With the insertion of minimal and clean appliances, Fisher & Paykel products blend into the kitchen without taking away from other elements of the apartments. Contributing to Auckland’s built environment, an architect designs a modern apartment that allows the occupants to live a city life whilst being surrounded by suburban comfort.

I drive past this place regularly and I never would of imagined how stunningly beautiful it is inside, thank you for sharing ❤ We need more housing like this in central Auckland suburbs 😊

That grill facade on the street side is magnificent and the interior finishing materials are exquisite especially the ocean grey tile in the kitchen. Another great project! ♥

The design is impressive. However I feel for the rest of the neighbourhood as this building does not fit at all with the surrounding architecture. Many of the designs featured on The Local Project are showcases for architecture that is sensitive to its surroundings whether alone in nature, or within existing neighbourhoods. This design, while very good, does not.

I don’t agree. This transforms at night, as the neighborhood decides to go on a stroll it gives so much warmth from what it provides while being so discreet, the material alone are worth the location more than you know, the neighborhood is what needs to keep up. Not saying everything needs to go, i just think this adds so much more to human life than any other building surrounding. Id be lucky to grow up admiring such art from afar. But I respect your perspective and think of it as a challenge to better suite materials that elevate its surroundings from all points of view.

I totally agree, not to mention that for the sake of the innovative design you have completely ruined the left and right sizes of the neighbouring houses. They now face to a concrete wall, for God's sake!. This type of architecture, even if it is eye-catching, in such surroundings should be forbidden. What you have done to those 2 neighbours is plain and simple being a complete bastard.

I was also looking for someone in the comments to mention this. While the architecture is amazing, the surrounding homeowners have a complete loss of privacy and gained a giant building out of their window. I am surprised this was approved, especially in a nice neighborhood.

I am surprised this was allowed through planning, right of light ect for the neighbours and far too high!

This building quite literally sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm sure all the architecture was well thought out, but an integral part of architecture is to know where to build given that buildings interact with their surroundings.

"mixed-use development that positively contributed to Auckland’s built environment"
I'm not sure how this building does this in its location. Perhaps if it were in Auckland's city centre it would be different, but this towers over everything around it and doesn't mesh well with the neighbourhood.
As others have mentioned, I feel sorry for the direct neighbours who now have this to look at every day.

I love most of the projects featured on this channel but this one really disappoints. Other comments about inappropriate scale and prison-like feeling because of the screening and blank concrete walls echo my impression as well. Would not be happy if I lived next door. Sorry but this project doesn’t do it for me

Totally inappropriate development in that location: too big relative to its neighbours, and too close to the neighbouring homes for its size. The buildings across the road also now have a monstrous big box in front of them, rather than appropriately sized houses and apartments. Yes, it's shiny and new, but so what: it's just another modern box with expensive materials and fittings...
