What I like about these techniques of farming, is that they have scale-ability. Hoss' techniques could be scaled up with the addition of tools and machinery, which cant be done in raised beds and most permaculture. Other channels follow some of the same basic philosophies, but still mostly work by hand. Another thing I like about this channel is that it adds a little new-age farming technique while sticking to the tried and true. Keep up the good work, and plant a bunch of fruit trees and take it a little easier.

Received my notice from Hoss Tools that my potatoes shipped today. It will be 5 to 6 week before I can plant them but look forward to getting them in. This will give me plenty of time to cut them up and have them skin over.
I'm in the 3rd year of a personnel experiment. Potatoes evolved in the mid semi-arid areas of the northern Andes. I have seriously studied the volcanic soils of that area and have tried to duplicate it as best I could with what I could get. Using charcoal ash in place of volcanic ash, adding such things as Minute amounts of Sulfuric and Nitric acid and other trace minerals, regulating the water cycle as might be seen in it's environment (unfortunately can't control the rain). Finding the right Potato was the difficult part, I went with a rough Russet Potato. Three years and it has sprouted every year. Don't know exactly when the experiment ends (Unprofessional), but if the environment wanted it dead it would be.

I will take a Russet over Yukon any day, or a purple variety, but that is just me. I can source seed for about $1 per pound locally at a farm supply store. Lowes and the HD are overpriced for so few. Sometimes when planting it can be a wet spring so plant in the mud you shall. I have made many mud pies when planting strawberries and plant starts at times as well. You make mud after planting seeds by watering so why not.

Hey guys got a question bout ants! Have yall done a video or have talked bout in one how y'all keep ants out of your garden? I have raised beds and an in ground garden and they are trying to take over lol
We have talked about this topic a few times. While there are bait and other chemicals you can apply to kill the ants, the easy way to remove them is through disturbance. Ants don't like disturbance. So if you lightly scuff your soil at least once a week, they'll move somewhere that is not frequently disturbed. That's the easy way in my opinion.
Good idea to fertilize at planting and then again at the first hilling. I used our Complete Organic Fertilizer (hosstools.com/product/complete-organic-fertilizer/) alongside the rows, but had already wrapped the video when I remembered to do it.
I really don't have a concrete watering schedule. I definitely don't want the soil too wet. I just keep an eye on the plants and if they look stressed, I'll give them a splash with the overhead sprinkler.
QUESTION for Travis : If I have an area that I planted with tomatoes last year is it ok to plant potatoes there this year? I forgot the rule on rotation of potatoes.
Not if you can help it. Those are in the same family and it's best if you don't plant them in the same spot in consecutive years or even every 2-3 years if you can help it.

I now have potato plants that have emerged this week and are about 3-4 inches high. I know I am supposed to rotate so should I dig these out and toss into the compost pile or let them grow in that same spot? (zone 7)
We have quite a few customers that do fall potatoes, but you won't find seed potatoes for sale in the fall. You'll have to use the potatoes you harvested from the spring crop.
We'll "hill" them when they get about 6" tall. We side dressed them after this video was shot (sorry for not including that) and will do it again when we hill them.

Do you have issues with wire worms? We have just been hit with them and having trouble figuring out what to do. Love coming home from work and watching your videos.
We used to do it like this. We would charge $4-5 per produce/item for what would be enough for a family of four to have a side dish at a meal. Don't try to compete with grocery store prices. Your produce is much more valuable because you grew it and know what's in it.
Travis, I am few weeks away from planting my potatoes. Have you ever used the trip tape on potatoes? I was thinking about trying it by offsetting the tape from the furrow.
I have used it. It works, but I'm a little trigger happy with the water and I would tend to keep the area around the potatoes too moist and got some rotting. So now I just use the overhead sprinkler for potatoes.

Depends on how frugally you cut them. I used a 5 lb bag per 30' row, but probably could have gotten 40' if I would have cut the pieces a little smaller.

You don't want to cover the vegetation completely. We usually wait until we can hill without covering any of the later sprouting ones.

I have had issues in some years. Seems like if we don't harvest right when the plants die, they get worse.

For these 30' rows, it took 5 lbs of cut seed potatoes. So for a 50' row, you'd probably be looking at somewhere between 5 and 10 lbs.

You can, although they're not certified to not have any inherent diseases like our certified "blue-tag" seed potatoes are. So a small risk there.
