It’s a 22b at that. There’s only one 2 door Impreza and that’s the infamous 22b. The thing could hang with the Ferraris and other exotics of the time. It didn’t have the top end the exotics did, but it had better handling and acceleration than most others.
Up until this, takumi has only ever driven RWD cars, his 86, iketanis s13, and itsukis 85. While they all have different amounts of power, and different advantages (yes even the 85 has an advantage) they were all RWD which made the act of drifting them essentially the same thing each time. So takumi learning how to use an AWD system will not only help him drive his 86 better, but will also give him a more insightful perspective of how his 86 puts him at a huge disadvantage in terms of power and maneuverability
It also is worth noting the 86 (prior to the engine swap anyways) at most likely had in the region of 130~180hp at most, while Iketani's S13 had around 200~220hp and Itsuki 85 even when turboed probably didn't push more than either, while the STOCK WRX STI of this generation made 280hp easy, and I'm betting Bunta tuned it before buying it so north of 300hp is not impossible. Ditto all the going to Subaru's excellent AWD system which gave immense grip that no RWD can match. No wonder Takumi went into a slump after this.
Which advantages of the 85 were you thinking about? The two I can think of right away is the low weight, and the soft suspension. Yes, I am serious, mountain passes can be really bumpy and have quite drastic changes in road surface and surface elevation, a soft suspension can negate a lot of that without upsetting the car’s balance, like rally cars on specific stages.
@@AndorRadnai so SOHC engines have better low end torque whereas DOHC engines are better in the high end, and while itsukis engines is definitely not winning any straightaway races, if he were to have tuned it right hw could exit the corners faster than if he were driving an 86, which is the opposite for the 86, it can enter a corner at high speeds but exiting is its weakness, so they two basically play off eachother, and the suspension can always be changed to suit the driver
This also set him up perfectly for his race against joshima. Bunta goes on to say that every day takumi races against himself when he’s in the Impreza there’s an imaginary 86 in his mirrors and when he’s in the 86 there’s an imaginary Impreza in front of him. It keeps takumi in a constant battle with himself on how to find advantages by using different racing lines once he finds one the very next day the imaginary car will start using that same line. This is the kind of curve ball Joshima throws at him during their battle which is why ryosuke refers to him as a ghost.
In the Japanese dub, Takumi mentions that the feeling of driving the WRX compared to the 86 is cruel. I kinda get what he means. All the work, effort and skill to drive the 86 fast, he doesn't need to do that when driving the WRX since it does it all already showcasing the difference between the 2 cars. I experienced this when I'd switch from my 240SX to my brother's 2.2 Impreza coupe. Despite the Impreza being auto, it still retained its AWD capabilities and cornered much more effortlessly compared to my S13.
That’s the thing with genuinely effective innovation. My mother’s car is a lot younger version of the same model line than mine, and that car is leagues better than mine. It’s faster, more balanced. For the most part yes. For this particular car, no. It’s the 22b STI. It’s the only 2 door version of the Impreza ever made and it’s an absolute beast of a car. It lacked the same top speed as the exotics but had better handling and acceleration as well as being much lighter. Subaru made this car to commemorate their rally teams success.
