Hello from Vancouver BC. I find your videos extremely helpful. I'm glad you updated this procedure because I'm going to be installing the windshield into my 60 bug very soon.
I installed a set of Wolfsburg West windows seals (with chrome trim) in my bug this past summer. Was the first time I've ever done this so I can't compare the seals to other brands but everything went together and all windows were installed without breaking any glass. The seals and trim do seem to be of good quality and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. The chrome trim did need to be finessed a bit so it matched the shape of its groove...doing this is really important and makes installation into the seal a lot easier.
Great video thanks Chris! I would also stress that the chrome trim needs tweaking and MUST line up with the shape of the glass or it is more likely to pop out itself and the rubber out of place, especially in the 65 and later beetles when the glass starts to have a slight curve and is not completely flat. I've done this a couple times now, a major pain as you mention, but looks so amazing with the classic chrome. I have used WW rubber and chrome and it worked pretty well.
G'day Kevin from Australia. Great video. I just put my front window in on my 62 beetle and i got my seal from Justkampers. It had good thickness, the rubber was good quality and even the colour was a nice black. ✌
I hold a beer up to anyone who does this. I had my 63bug painted/repaired. They forgot to put in the chrome trims. I popped out the rear window, the strip goes 2 different directions. what a nightmare. 6 peeps worked on it with me. Maybe 4 hrs, I destroyed one chrome strip and reused one old one. Yes I got it in but I took it back to the body shop and said you do the windshield.
Hello , good afternoon can I install a new trim in the back window , the glass is intaled in the car , can I still install the trim with the glass mounted in car?
I've purchased seals from Wolfsburg West and the joins are terrible. Not sure what the Westcoast Metric seals are like. I also purchased new old stock german seals which fit amazingly. I kept the original molding which was repaired and polished and I must say the fit and profile is unbelievable.
JUST GOT TRIM SET FROM JBUGS, so i need to remove the windown & put the chrome trim in ? CAN LEAVE IN LIKE IS? THANKS,.this my 1st time & doing it myself ,! =) thank you!
Great Video. This gives me a few guidelines for I need to replace the seal and "put back" the chrome trim on my windshield. Unfortunately, I have a 74 Super sedan and have been told the curved windshields are NOT as easy to install. Somewhere I read/heard there are "teeth" along the bottom of the window opening for the rubber. I know you had a 74 Super in the shop a few years back, Any pointers on doing one on those
Question : 1963 and earlier models have “flat” front windshields? I’ve used a metal ruler and it reads flat, the windshield is have is “smoked” with no logo, i am not sure which side is which.. any ideas?
Great video I just did my first attempt of installing a new windshield and rubber and chrome on my 78 SB Vert. Took me about 2 hours installing by myself from installing the new rubber and chrome. Which by the way was the most frustrating because bending it to conform to the shape of the windshield before installing the rubber takes alot of patience. But I got it done without and kinks ....Why dont they make a plastic chrome molding that is bendable or is that even possible? After that was complete I used speaker wire and with a alot of finessing it popped right in.... I have to say Im very impressed with myself for trying this I had my doubts. Though I hope I dont have to do this for a very long time. My fingers were sore for days afterwards.
Yes, such a thing exists, I installed it in my 71 Bug (with the larger window, after the switch they made in sept.71). I'm not sure how it's called on US websites, but it definately exists. It also has different clips in the middle than the aluminium trim. Like this : www.csp-shop.com/en/?func=detailcall&artnr=12467a
Good question, not sure. I've never installed on a type 3. Not sure if it is the same. I know karmann Ghia is different for instance, chrome goes in after window installation.
@@classicvwbugs OK, thanks! The chrome was removed by the previous owner so, that should simplify things. Guess I'll learn the hard way. Really don't want to break the glass.
Chris I'm going to heilp a friend switch his back windows from fixed to pop-outs 74' super if you have a vid on that I would greatly appriciate a link. No hurry since he just odered the pop-out kit. won't get to it for about 2 weeks. Thanks-Rog

You're using that tool wrong. It has the bend so you can put the bent end of the tool in the channel and drag it. So that the "elbow" can spread the channel and clear the path. Then it won't keep popping out.
Very good Chris keep up the good work
that was me asking the dumb question about leaving the windows in. haha. I just changed my windshield thanks to you chris.
Nah no worries, you and hundreds more, I get the question almost every week for years

@@SDsailor7 you can try, but might be too slippery where it can pop out.
FYI about 2 years ago we did add about 3/16 of an inch to the flap on our VW Bug window rubber seals. Hope this helps.

Silicon spray would be better ,wd40 destroys rubber ( petroleum based )
