Dealing with Audition Competition | Acting Advice

  • Happy #TheatreThursday everyone! Today, I'm going to discuss a highly requested (and DM'd) topic: dealing with competition.
    Now, when I talk about competition, I don't mean like a singing or acting competition, I mean dealing with AUDITION COMPETITION. Have you ever, in the midst of preparing for an audition, got super self conscious and sidetracked wondering if you're best friend or frenemy would go to the same audition? Did you spend countless hours debating between the light blue and the dark blue audition dress, wondering if another girl would wear the same one??
    Well, SAME GURL. SAME. Audition competition is one of my least favorite ways to fill my already stress filled, anxiety ridden mind to the brim with self doubt and pointless facts. Dealing with competition (and learning to healthfully ignore it) is still an ongoing process in my mind, but I think I'm doing better with it.
    A little bit of competition for the same role or show can be healthy and helpful, but it can also be incredibly time consuming and soul crushing. Personally, I'd rather just take that time and energy and put it toward preparing for your audition!
    Anyways, the rant is over. Enjoy the video!

    Something I've noticed when kids audition it's the moms who usually give the dirty looks and stares that could melt stone,
    Anyone else noticed this?

  • @kcorona7715

    so in the gilbert/mesa theatre community of arizona, it's so much like a typical movie high school. there's the popular kids who always get the leads and everyone knows them and the people who are actually a lot better than them that never get roles and idk it's just clique-y and there's a weird hierarchy about it. However, if you ever have a chance to see a community youth theatre musical producition in the gilbert/mesa/chandler area, PLEASE DO! The productions are very high quality and the talent level is insane seriously.

    So I would like to share this moment with someone who understands how real it is,
    Me: mom I need new jazz shoes
    Mom: but you just got another pair over the summer
    Me: but they don't fit my character
    I can now state that I go through jazz shoes like BFA students go through leotards

      Katherine Steele hey Katherine I'm sorry I'm not posting my coment normally but I have a important question and I want your advise.
      okay, so I got a lead for my first musical as a freshmen in my school with out in experience (it's unheard of for a freshman to have a lead) Wichita is fine and dandy but my friend is deeming with depression and a really good actor but she didn't get into the show and she is really bitter at me right me and she doesn't want to talk about me and she wants to kill herself (she's also dealing with a bunch of other stuff not just this)
      so my question is, how do you comfort a freind who didn't get a role but you got a role and she mad at you?

    This year for school we did The Little Mermaid Jr. The only ppl auditioning for Ursula was my 2 friends and me. It was kind of weird going against my friends, but it also relieved some of the pressure. I was just thinking "If i get it, i know they wont be mad at me. If i dont get it, i can just be happy for them" One of my friends got it (which i knew she would because it fits her casting type and she is an 8th grader which takes priority)

    hi, when i was in high school, i was in the drama club, the director who was also the school librarian, was a total biased director, she had her favorites, which were this girl that had these big teeth, who always got the lead in our plays, this boy who was such a butt kisser, these two slacker boys, one fat red head, and one fat brunette, all of them always got roles in the plays. when i first joined the drama club, i got speaking roles, they were four or five lines, in the script. then all of the sudden, i started getting cast as an extra, then come my senior year, the director kicks me out of the drama club for no reason at all,. now before anyone says it's because of my acting, it really was not because of that at all, it was because i was black. she claims that it was because i didn't sell enough tickets, but i knew that was a lie. she never ever seen my acting skills to it's fullest potential, she never gave me a chance to show her what i can do. i know it was because i was black, by the way she treated me. and the big teethed girl had the nerve to be stuck up, at a reading, she had left her seat to go do something, and i was out of my seat, because i went to go talk to somebody, and went to sit down, but i accidentally sat in her seat., and realize i have done that, quickly got out of it. she sees what i have done, and goes, and sits in the empty seat that is beside it., like as if i had an infectious virus or something. i told the director about the girl's attitude towards me ,and she did nothing about it. the others ignored me, i always sat to my self, with no one to talk to. and they would also grab their props that they brought in their selves, when ever i walked over to look at them , the big teeth girl's lamp had gone missing for back stage once, she looked at me like she think i have stole it, like what the heck would i do with a dang on lava lamp. anyway the point to this is, I'm an adult now, and is considering joining a community theater group, but I'm afraid that i might have the same horrible experience, any tips on how to over come this fear, and give my love for theater another chance ?

    I have a question: so we have this project in out theatre once a year where kids and teenagers get together and create a musical that we'll perform once after half a year of rehearsels. I'll be going there for the 3rd year now, and even though I KNOW I can sing and act I ALWAYS get like the smallest role in history that was ever made and they never even give me a mic. Now this sounds like a case of someone thinking they can sing but actually they dont but..its not. I just know I am not a bad singer and actor but they wont give me any role. Do you have any tips on what I may be doing wrong or how I can make them see that I could also get a bigger role rather then just staying in the background and not saying a word. It frustrates me :/ Love you lots

    • @Kath_Steele
      @Kath_Steele  7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +Cookie Star sorry to hear that! It's hard to say why people cast the way that they do--it might be totally unfairly biased. I'd recommend looking at what the leads are doing--do they have more experience? Are they better prepared? Are they more professional? Do they have better material? If it's that sort of thing--work on that! If not-I wouldn't worry about it

    I’m unsure of what my competition will be at my middle school’s production of Newsies. I’m going for Katherine and very excited, I’ve had about a month to prepare. I have an advantage though, as I’m very loud and a natural actor. Even some voice may be better than mine, they may sing too quiet or be shy.

    I love musical theatre, but I hate auditions because I act seeing people I know. Like in my high school drama club, the seniors get the leads whether they're good or not, and everyone else is supporting or extras. Not only do I psych myself out about that, but there's this kid who's a senior this year who's been acting in the club for years but quit last year and is coming back. Apparently he's really good, and I've been making myself crazy trying to predict what he's going to do, and I know better than that. Not to mention there are some male singers who don't necessarily like me because I best them out or ate similar to them, so I'm always paranoid that they're coming for me. But thanks, Katherine Steele, for making me sane again. Much love.

      Also, I always fear I'm choosing the wrong song to sing. Like our show this year is Mary Poppins, and auditions are coming up soon, and I have: the Age of Not Believing from Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Edelweiss from Sound of Music, and On the Street where you live from My Fair Lady. I just don't wanna go in there already doomed because of a bad choice of music, and the audition sheets says you're literally aloud to sing anything you want.

    Hey Kath! I was recently cast as Cinderella in "Rodgers & Hammersteins Cinderella" & I am super pumped about it! Anyways, I would say that acting would be my weakest area out of the three right now & I think it's because I don't REALLY get into the character or do a proper character study. So, I was wondering if you had any tips on really becoming and embodying another character? Or if you have any tips about Cinderella specifically. Thank you!

    • @Kath_Steele
      @Kath_Steele  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Mallory Mayo hey there!! 💕 congrats!! I'll definitely be doing s character analysis vid in the near future, but in the mean time: Think about what makes Cinderella a "princess". Alot of people tend to play princesses as sweet and pretty, and with no depth. I think that it's important to figure out what makes your specific princess a role model.
      When I played Cinderella, I really focused on her kindness and generosity (there's a big difference between being "nice" and being kind!). Her type of kindness, in my opinion, is almost kind of sad--she's been treated so poorly and had absolutely nothing, so she wants to ensure that no one else has to feel that way.

    Hey Katherine, I need some audition advice...
    I am 15 year old boy and I am a tenor. This upcoming summer I am going to New York for a musical theatre camp. The shows they are doing are Catch Me If You Can, Heathers, Hairspray, and Sweeny Todd. Each camper will get put into one of these shows. The audition consists of singing about a minute of a musical theatre song in front of the directors of each show. I am curious what song I should sing for the audition? I am hoping to get into Hairspray or Heathers, but I would be happy with any show. My goal is get a principal role in any of these shows. I was thinking maybe singing "Dreamer in Disguise" from Carrie if I wanted to be in Heathers, but thats just an idea. Do you think "Dreamer in Disguise" would be good? What male audition song do you think would be good with each show? What song be good if I wanted to Link Larkin or Corny Collins?
    Thank You and I love Theatre Thursdays !!!

    I need some advice...
    I do theatre in Pennsylvania during the summer and I always end up in the top two for the lead with the director's favorite. We're the exact same level and I can tell I train so much more than she does. Obviously she always gets it because she's the favorite. Is there anything that you recommend I work on that could possibly get me just good enough to get it?

      Hey Courtney! I'm sorry to hear about that, I know how frustrating that can be. :/ In my opinion, it sounds like you might be dealing with a biased casting director. If that's the case, there's not much you can do. Since you can't control the outcome, I'd recommend working on the process-being as prepared and professional as possible. Also, before the summer, make sure to network with the casting directors and any other influential people! :)

    Katherine im auditioning for a foundation course in one of the uk´s best college in april and i have two concerns..i wished you could help me! First; If it´s a gap year/foundation course, made for helping students with potential who need to improve some skills or who don´t feel ready for a foundation course... I think i have potential in two of the areas (acting and singing) but, even though i had ballet(2 years) and jazz dancing (4 years), i feel like im not the best at picking up coreo, do you think that if i dont pick up a step of two, even if im being expressive dancing with attitude, i may be sent out (only 22 places for girls and boys) ? Second; How do i know if a song is overdone (if not from WICKED, PHANTOM(Anything from andrew lloyd webber), Les Mis (etc)...I wanted to sing Astonishing from Little Women, cuz i think it really suits me and many of my teachers also do but im afraid it might be overdone and that i may not stand out :( PLZ HELP... LOVE U XXXXXXX PS: sorry to bother u with this huge text but im just freaking out and ur the only person who i feel like can help me) :)

    Hello everyone! Just wanted to say something, if there is one person who’s always getting the rolls you want, and the director has actually told you you’re second best, what you need to do is be a extra good person at rehearsals, and be extra nice to the director. I’m not saying you should be a total kiss up, but what influences some directors casting decisions for actors already know from past shows, is how good of a person they are, I’m not saying every director will go by this, but what my director has said is, “Sometimes I won’t cast the most talented person in the room, I might cast the second best person if they’re taking no things more seriously and being a good role model.” And again I’m not saying you should be a kiss up, but just be very kind and responsible. I’ve been seeing my main competition not really being a good role model, and I think me trying to be an extra good person might be my only chance at getting a lead role. DISCLAIMER: I am not saying every director goes by this but I hope it will help, and I am not being nice to my director only to get a part, but also because she is AMAZING. Hope this helped and you have a wonderful day or night! 😁☺️😘

    hi katherine, have you any advice for auditioning for a musical theatre company that you don't prepare anything for? I'm scared! love your videos x

    • @Kath_Steele
      @Kath_Steele  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lucy Reidy hey there!! I'm guessing, that in this instance, they provide the material once you're at the audition. My advice: be warmed up and prepared for anything. Have a super can-do attitude. Since they're not giving you time to prepare, they want to see if you can learn something (fast), perform it well, and (most of all) not crack under pressure.
      Research/listen to/be ready for different genres (R&H, contemporary, rock, operetta) and know what makes those shows look and sound different, and really play up your versatility

    Yo Kath I was hoping you could help me out with something. So I was just cast as Captain EJ Smith in my high schools production of Titanic the musical and I am so stoked (ha puns) about it! I was wondering what sort of character study you do while working on a role? With my most roles such as Eric in little mermaid and Sir Harry on once upon a mattress, I have done a questionnaire that I've found online for the role and I found it useful but this role just by doing research on the actual man and reading the script is by far the most complex and intense character I have ever played so I want to portray it as true and raw as I can. Hit me up with some advice girl. Thank ya!

      @Kath_Steele  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +tate mcelhaney hey!! First off, that's awesome!! 😊 I definitely plan on doing a character analysis video on the near future--but in the mean time: play the reality of the situation. Research things that your character would know and things your character encounters (in this case, it would be like boating terms, ship protocol, etc. and bodily physiological responses to cold, high stress)

    I have 2 questions.
    (Number 1) I am going for this role in community theatre thing and I know everyone there but I feel like there are favorites, I of course am not going to say anything, but it is kind of annoying how do I deal with this situation.
    (Number 2) I once was doing this production of hairspray,I was playing Cindey Walkins (I I sure of it you will not know who she is.[she is almost ensemble but has one line] Back to the question) I said all kinds of stuff like. Where is the rest of the black ensemble , which they are actually are Called in the musical, but I feel like saying those words were racisted . But it could not of been racist because it is part of the show.( I was also part of that ensemble) so is it racist or not.

      Hey there! 💕
      1. I'm so sorry to hear that! :/ Like I mentioned in the video, you can't control the outcome--you can only control what you put into it. Keep trying your hardest, practice even harder, and be the most professional, prepared person in the room. Additionally, you might just be dealing with a biased casting director--and there are hundreds of thousands of those in the world. If that's the case and you really can't work through it, I'd recommend looking for other theatre companies and performance opportunities.
      2. Hard to say -- different words affect people differently. I wouldn't be offended if someone called me "white" because I am, I do not feel hurt or misrepresented by the term. However, I'm just one person--another person who shares my same background might be prefer another adjective.
      Also, keep in mind: just because the script says something doesn't necessarily mean it's okay to say offstage :)

    Hey I have a audition on Sunday and I want to sing pulled from the Adams family. I love to sing it and I feel really confident doing that song, but I know it's really overdone! I don't know if I have time to find a new song and try to cut it! WHAT DO I DO! I'm really scared about the fact that it is overdone and I don't know what to do! Can you help me? The reason I picked it is because I found out about the audishion with really short notice. I know I will do good singing pulled but I'm reall nervous about how popular it is!

    • @Kath_Steele
      @Kath_Steele  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Duck Puppet hey there! You can either choose a new song (th-cam.com/video/Xx2kefqKZxM/w-d-xo.html) or stick to 'Pulled'. If you think it's an audition situation where doing a popular song will really hurt your chances, you should switch. If not-- and you can totally rock 'Pulled' and it's fits you perfectly and you love it--stick to it! Break a leg ❤

    Story Time (this is really long by the way)
    So I have two amazing theatre friends and we have always stuck together. All of sudden this year, we are competing against each other for roles and it sucks. Here is how all over the place it was *names are changed*
    I got a lead, Sofia gets ensemble, Megan doesn't audition
    Megan and Sofia both get ensemble, I don't audition
    I get a lead, Megan gets a supporting role, Sofia doesn't auditon
    Megan and Sofia are double cast as the same role, I get ensemble
    Megan gets a lead, I get supporting, Sofia gets ensemble
    Sofia gets the one kid part, Megan doesn't get in, I don't audition
    I hate all of this because I love working with Megan and Sofia, but we are totally different actors in the same age range, so you can't find a rhyme or reason for why we get placed where we are. The thing is, Megan isn't as experienced when it comes to theatre, so her Mom is sort of turning into Mama Rose and making Megan a diva. At the last to auditions, they walk in with me and go in right before me- but don't talk to me so they can be "intimidating" I guess. They copy my audition song, they copy Sofia's monolouge, they gossip about us. It just sucks because we used to be peas in a pod and now we can be at each others throats for parts.
    I can I set myself apart from them, when we are constantly competing for parts? HELP PLEASE THEATRE THURSDAY FAM!
