I feel like in everyday “lazy” English most people would look at you funny if you said “I’m keen on” or “I take a great liking to”. There’s nothing wrong with saying “ I like” or “I’m into” and is usually what most native English speakers would say.
These "stop using the everyday expressions native speakers use all the time" videos are really weird. Why don't they say something like "expand your vocabulary with by learning these other expressions, but those everyday expressions you already know are 100% valid, so keep using them as much as you want because those are what natives use all the time as well"? No, they have to tell you "STOP USING THESE EXPRESSIONS ALTOGETHER". I don't get the logic behind this.
Note from a native English speaker: You can use the verb "enjoy" to say "like". "I enjoy long walks on the beach." "I enjoy watching POC English videos."
@@POCEnglish I wanna purchase your course.. what are the procedure could you please provide me the information regarding the your English speaking courses?
Wow..., wow..., what an Excellent Teacher you are...!!! It's so worthy and makes the viewers pretty enthusiastic towards the language. Thank you so much ❤️
Hi all. Here is what I think about this. I am a native speaker of English at the C2 level. I also hold a Masters in Linguistics, and several other certificates. Don't try to use vocabulary that is too advanced in everyday speech. Keep it simple. It is ok to say that you like/dislike something, etc. The purpose of language is communication, to understand and to be understood - to convey your ideas or thoughts. I have never in my life 'had an aversion' to anything. I simply like or dislike it. Be well.
Yes I agree. The expressions of the beginner’s and intermediate levels in this videos are fine, while the advanced ones are rare in daily conversations or even written English. It’s just a good reference for expanding our vocabulary and preparing for exams.
Dear Mr.POC, as an old non-native English speaker, I need to say that I always have had enough of the overuse of Anglo-Saxon acronyms. I just can't take it anymore! I'm so sorry, but looking up the meaning of POC, the Internet gives me many, too many, even absurd ones like “person of color” (Cambridge dictionary). Maybe “proof of concept” (Wikipedia) could be your youtube channel's nickname, but I'm getting bored at this point, it doesn't matter. My 5 cent on the teachings in this video, starting 40 years ago: a pretty irish girl, teacher in english, reminded me of the concept of KISS, another acronym. I wanted to kiss her, she was so cute, I was so stupid to misunderstand that acronym, meant to be 100% communicative, don't giving a s*** about fashions, understatement and especially the label that people can stick on me because I express myself in the simplest way possible without hiding that I am not stupid. I still believe in KISS. Since then I keep on using 'like' to express my liking, or give a thumbs up, and everyone always understands me, even the Chinese, without having to repeat my Oxford English today so underrated in the world.
Bro you make a such great videos for us nevertheless I want that from u please make video on a lesson about phrasel verbs on word's like run,go,hang, take etc🙏🏻
I can't believe that in this point of my life i can understand almost the whole video. Things like music, duolingo, and this kind of videos it helps a lot. Thanks.
During my first year at university, I used to hate listening to English videos because I was struggling to understand them. But later on, when I built my bank of vocabulary about various topics, I took an instant liking to English videos in a wide range of contexts.
What is "Poke English". ??? I know the proper way of speaking English and I cringe when I hear people use it incorrectly, like "funner/funnest", "previous to", "him and me" etc. -- all are not correct. I "DON'T LIKE" your video. IT IS FINE TO SAY THOSE THINGS. You are just being SILLY !!!
Native speaker here, both I’m fond and I’m keen are archaic. No modern speaker uses that. “Im into” is more modern. “ I can’t get enough” is modern but his uses were awkward. No one would say I can’t get enough of this pizza. They would say this pizza is amazing or fantastic or delicious etc. There some other awkward or archaic usages in here but I’m too lazy to write them all up. Just watch movies to get better usage lol
Hey Maddy ! it is way too much information in one go . Thankyou so much for all your efforts it is such a great lesson . Easy to learn and understand I want to say i have a great liking to your teaching method . THANKYOU SO MUCH .LOVE FROM INDIA❤💫❤
And how can i say: Me mama el té, en ingles, teacher, also, le puedo decir; Daddy?. I love english, by the way. Also remember 2 leave your like 4 the plot.
For people who complain about "I don't use these words because I usually listen to english speakers saying I like and I don't like". This ways of stating I like or don't like sound like your a knowledgeable person which means you know a lot,so a lot of people interest in you because your knowledge, I mean, This makes you sophisticated
Why over complicate it and who cares what your level of English is? Just hearing your voice I can tell your level isn’t high at all. I like to watch TH-cam videos. I don’t like over complicating things like you do. Take care.
Why do I or anyone else has to care what I say? *Like,* if you want to say what you do and don't like you just say it with lots of "likes" or just use enumeration after first "I like/I don't like" and everybody will get that. Why do you have to struggle and put up phrases like "I'm keen", "I'm fond of", "I'm crazy about", "I abhor this/that", "I hate this" in you head when you have simple and convenient "I like"? And judging someone's level of English by the use of vocabulary is ridiculous for me.
Exactly what I wanted to say. Also not all people are native speakers so why would I use such complicated statements? I like is just simple and straightforward
Native English speaker here, these alternatives all mean something slightly different. If someone doesn't understand the subtle differences, it's better to use like. Also, if you say "I have a liking for something" it's going to come across as old timey, same with "I took a liking to her." Nobody talks like that anymore.
Thank you so much Mandy. Your teaching is really precise, easy to understand, humour and importantly your patience to explain. Some lessons are eye opening to me. Thumb up.
Salamoalikom dear teacher Really i enjoy it , Hope more video like that N I wonder if there is any plan for business English Thks a lot Saloya from morroco
I diagree. Needlessly complicating something as simple as liking something is ridiculous. Most native speakers just say they like something. No need to extend it past that point. The point gets across.
How can i get those pdf files with a summary of the lesson and some tasks if i already subscribed to the news sendler and it says IN THE FUTURE I'll get all the plans and summaries of other lessons. I need these ones.
Serious lizard people vibes, no surprise some people can't speak English properly even after years of training if those are the things they are supposed to learn. I'm not so keen on artificial English taught in night school, lol.
Maddy, you look great! Thank you for video. It's wonder, but I am understanding what you are saying without subtitles and translator. You have a good pronunciation.

This is true. It wouldn’t sound natural to use those words others than very specific instances. I’ve never used I have a hatred for or aversion for.
Yes, that sounds weird. And hatred or aversion seems very rude. Besides, he pronounces “listening” like “lessening” or something like that.
Only extremely old or extremely pretentious people *ever* say “I’m keen on s.”
👍Exactly what I thought when I watched this video.language,the simple the better😂

U can also not say any of that at all. I fly quadcopters. Boom, done.
Definitely a native.😊
You can also use the verb on its root form, "I like to cook". He made it sounds like you can only use the verb+ing form.

However, in a test such as the IELTS, it's good to show variety of vocabulary to get a higher band

To excel in a foreign language (for non-native speakers), the first and foremost thing is to expand their vocabulary.
Yes I agree. The expressions of the beginner’s and intermediate levels in this videos are fine, while the advanced ones are rare in daily conversations or even written English. It’s just a good reference for expanding our vocabulary and preparing for exams.
