If you want to keep that look you should knock off everything loose, make sure there are no abrupt edges on the paint, and then spray it with clear coat.
Of course you can keep quite a lot of it intact like that... Scrape off as much of the loose flaky shit as you can then use a rust convertor sparingly on the exposed metal parts, not covering any real leftover paint or bubbles, and then matte clear the whole thing. It will need occasional touch ups, but eventually you will get on top of it.

On the 89 F-150, I’d say clean and check or replace the IAC valve, that is probably the case if you have to hold the pedal so it doesn’t die and takes a while to start
I was going to post this, you beat me to it. Ford IAC valves are voice coil actuators and are famous for sticking. The cranking air-fuel ratio probably is calibrated assuming the IAC is in the ‘cranking’ position, it might be a tad lean if you’re starting it with the gas pedal and a stuck IAC. It’s been a while since I calibrated Ford EEC-IVs but I recall something about that.
I'd go with sanding it down just enough to smooth it out, then hit it with some patina sauce. I said "boop" at the exact same time as you did when the mouse hit the garbage can.
My wife's first car was a '72 Nova. By the time we married 5 years later, it graduated to become OUR first car. And my responsibility to fix. I learned my wrenching on that car and had turned its green color blue with my swearing. I got to appreciate an inline six and the room under the hood to work. Good luck, Mook.
Inline 6's last forever! I put almost 300,000 miles on my 1972 Chevy C-10 engine with 3 on the "tree" before the doors literally rusted off and fell on the tops of my feet. Best truck I ever owned (except the 1966 Dodge D-200 crew cab with the big truck slant six with four on the floor surplus Air Force that went over 300,000 and more). Inline 6's ruled back in the day. You could go 130 mph in a four door Chevy Nova for miles from downtown Rochester, NY to Exit 45 on I-90 in about 15 minutes on I-390. I did put on high speed tires so I wouldn't wreck, but that old '72 Nova flew. It wasn't a quick car, but it was fast. Do a good job on the Nova Mook, then take it out on an interstate as see if it will fly.
In addition to floor pans, I'd recommend at least a set of lower quarters on that thing for some more structural integrity. I believe that is a unibody and not a full frame. Definitely put quarters on it.
As I watched the very first garage video of this NOVA I was shocked but happy it was being reclaimed. When seeing it roll out of the garage and sounding like it did, it reminded me of the movie car Christine... Because she was red and practically on fire once, she rolled back out of the ruins giving it that back to life feel again. This car is gonna be a fun driver for ya... Those caused me to lose power when I had my 88 mustang gt. Lastly, you can check your gasket cover and seal. If you lose a lot of pressure there, that definitely will make the motor lose power when you press the gas. The second suggestion I listed would be my guess as to why it’s tough to start. Not gonna lie, that was one _Solid_ Mouse. I wonder where his nemesis Solid Snake is, what kind of conspiracies and -extermination- _assassination_ missions he's been on. Wait... if there is Solid Mouse, where is Liquid Mouse? I'd imagine that Liquid perished in the Great Nova Blaze not too many ages ago, so if you see Solidus Mouse in the car when cleaning, its probably partially Liquid and partially Solid, a good combination of evasion and defensive stats. _Yes, clearly my logic is entirely without any error whatsoever._

Good luck!
Holy Moly! Total Mad Max Wasteland car right there! I love it. The big hurkin' rust hole in the side behind the driver's door is money. I agree, that it totally needs to be driven as-is because it looks so crazy. Thanks for sharing!
Great work, Mook! You rock. Looking forward to the next installment, and thank you for the cool video content!!
I love how the limo is just casually in the background
@Remington Steel no I dont think so,
Not gonna lie, that was one _Solid_ Mouse.
That back seat is actually really cool. Love the heart imprint around the Chevy logo. Dunno why you heckin hate Chevies but man they're top of the list for me.
I really hope you guys restore this beast to life. It really needs it! You guys are doing a great job, btw.
Mook, you're hilarious and adorable. I always enjoy watching your work on things.
Very adorable.
Smart young lady and yes she is very cute! Great legs too. Love the Nova!
This is a perfect candidate for a death proof homage. Rubber ducky hood emblem and skull and crossbolts on flat black 🖤...
Fucking love that movie
It would be super cool to drop a 350 down in it and preserve the pipes, and the overall look of the car. Obviously you've got to protect the bare metal and get rid of paint that's come up but it would be amazing to turn it into a patina.
They said it had split manifolds on the six so the side pipes worked on both sides at one point.
I will keep it as it is, just flat of the loose pieces of paint, flt it down and clear coated it, you already have nice rums and it looks good, clean inside and complete enjin overhaul, and new grill and lights and it will look beautiful.
Let me know what you think.
Im from South Africa, and love looking at you and Kevin's channel.
Dang, scrapre it with a putty knife and pressure wash it til its clean. Burnt ain't the end of the world.love watching you two.
Scraping it takes a while but works well.
Who wants Mook to race this car in the 24 Hours of LeMons?
24 Hours of LeMullets @ the Freedom Factory
Yesss turbo that inline six, I want to watch it blow a piston out of the valve cover, might be exaggerating just a bit but it would be amusing.
You would be surprised how well those inlines hold up to boost (to a point of course)
@@kbar150 wow, can't believe they might actually hold up to it...
Nitrous.
@@johncrone4047 less strain on the crank with all the cylinders in a row and more main bearings than a V8.
@@stuartcote4915 ah that makes sense, thanks for the explanation
That car has a load of potential…
Worst thing is so much rust
🤣🤣🤣Mook's just taught everyone how to power wash off the patina 🤣🤣🤣
Looking forward to seeing more of your videos with the "Nova-cane"!
Of course he said yes, that man loves you to the moon and back hecker!! This is going to be a great project!
You and Kevin should definitely give us a sub, you guys were the inspiration for our revival channel
love your channel name. is it a reference to the 90s band the toadies?
@@ShawnCaldwell11 no we live in a town called possum kingdom
@@possumkingdompowersports6510 i just researched it and the band got the name from the lake located in texas. So im assuming that's where you are at lol
@@ShawnCaldwell11 we are in upstate South Carolina
That not often do people find treasure about cleaning up old vehicles. Finding spare change is good it helps out with the project.
Getting mad max vibes for this beast 👍 knock off the real loose paint, clear coat it and drive it 👌🏻
We could probably help detail the interior but you live 9 hours and 18 min but at the same time your doing a great job!!!
I love her best book post is he really advertised as the man’s man box or man subscription but if I really think about it it honestly fits Mook so much better than it fits any man I’m glad she got the sponsorship she deserved it
Burnt Nova needs to keep that thematic thread! The Hecker non cussing thing is wonderful. Wish I could find a gal like Mook😊 Enjoy Kevin😅
