I got started during 2020. Like most people I was bored and looking for a hobby. I have the space in my garage, I bought a few tools, and after watching some TH-cam videos I went out and got started. I’m far from a professional, but it’s a lot of fun. It’s relaxing and therapeutic for me being outside, alone, and using my hands/tools to make something.
A TV show called Trading Spaces got me into woodworking. I saw the show and thought to myself "I can buy a cheap DIY house and have it finished in less than a year if they can do a room over a weekend." LOL Yeah, right. Took nearly 16 years and I no more than finally finished the house that I had to sell it because I was getting ready to move to the Philippines. That's where I live now and I'm starting to get back into woodworking. Starting back up woodworking in a third world country is like learning the craft all over again LOL But I'm slowing rebuilding a tool arsenal and for the first time this year all the Christmas presensts will be handmade from the scroll saw.
I love the Santa! For me, i got started in woodworking like 3 years ago when i made a mudkitchen for my daughter and since then i love doing Things with wood. Although i dont have as much time as i want, i enjoy every moment of it. I hope i find a few hours putting a Video together someday. Best regards 😊
It was seeing my dad make stuff growing up. He always managed to fix anything that was broken or build stuff that we needed. Unfortunately, he passed away before I could really learn from him. But thank god for YT, loads of good stuff on there to help newbies like me. Must say though, your channels the best. Love the builds, tips and most of all the humour. Keep ‘em coming. And congrats on the 10k. Well deserved. Have a beer on me Nick
Great video. I agree with you about parents being a great motivator. My mom and dad could do anything from welding, building, pottery to weaving. This was all in the days before TH-cam. I grew up with the belief that me and my brothers or sister could do anything we set our minds to. It was great going to them with a question and rather than telling us how to do it they would take you through the steps of how to figure out the how. Still paying dividends after 67 plus years. Have a great holiday season, be careful on those roof tops and have a very MERRY Christmas. Thanks for sharing!
Woodworking is infuriating but when a plan comes together it is so incredibly satisfying to admire your work and know that you made it instead of buying it. I rarely make anything for myself but making for others is what motivates me, a handmade gift is hard to beat even if it's a little wonky. Love the Peanuts, my girlfriend calls me her Sweet Babboo and she's my Sally. Merry Christmas
Happy Holidays, Nick and family! Love the Santa! And it’s not Christmas without the Peanuts gang! 🎄 My dad restored furniture when he retired from the Army, and there was always scrap wood around that my little brothers and I used to make stuff. But getting caught up in work, bills, etc- I forgot how much fun it is just to make stuff- until last year when I picked it up again. Just like riding a bike! 😆🤘🌟
That’s awesome! I tried to find a kid friendly scroll saw for my kids this year for Christmas but I guess they don’t make that. They’re always asking me to cut them stuff out of scraps. My wife wouldn’t let me get them a real one. Hahahaha!
Love your videos man. I became a maker the moment I got my independence and started living on my own. Mostly out of a combination of being cheap, and wanting things that just didn't exist. Started with pallet board coffee tables, to most recently me selling my motorcycle to buy a bunch more tools so I can try turning my hobby into a nice little side hustle.
oh wow, Nick, great video and great memories!! And the Peanuts gang brings back memories of my childhood as well as yours. It's been such a good life ❤ Love you, kid!🥰
Great video! I never had any interest in woodworking or making of most kind until recently. A combination of buying a home, having kids, getting sober and seeking a more fulfilling hobby has led me to woodworking (with a little tool restoration mixed in). I love the process and learning something valuable every project. Keep up the great work!
I grew up watching Roy Underhill on the Woodright's Shop on PBS, and of course The New Yankee Workshop with Norm with my dad every weekend. We liked Norm a little better...the mess of Roy's shop kinda bothered us hahahaha. Norm had all of the cool stuff....I'm pretty sure you could build anything with a table saw and a biscuit jointer hahahaha. My dad wasn't a "woodworker" by any means, but he was able to make things, and figure it out. As I grew up an and got older....I started acquiring tools and "piddling" out in the garage. Now I have a 30x50 shop and a bunch of cool tools...even a biscuit jointer. It's still not my full time job or anything, but I enjoy making things for friends and family. When I got older and was trying to relearn everything...The Wood Whisperer (Marc Spagnuolo) and WWMM with Steve Ramsey were my go to....and then they started putting up the New Yankee Workshop episodes for free on their TH-cam channel...man..it was like reliving my childhood haha. My dad passed away a few years ago and I'm sure that has something to do with my recent revival of the woodworking.... Great video as always! Thanks for putting these out.
New yankee workshop on TH-cam was real exciting when I found it! Same feeling. Reliving my childhood. My dad had it on all the time. I actually called him when I found out so he could watch it too
Buying a House and thinking "We don't need to buy that! I can make it" Also "they want how much!? I can do it for cheap!" As a kid I loved to draw and come up with comics, then I fell in love with the idea of writing movies, No! Directing movies! Then I decided not to move to Cali. Then I thought I should start a TH-cam channel... ten years later here I am. 🤣 Awsome video and great projects too!
Dude! I think we have a lot in common! Hahaha! I was so obsessed with the idea of making movies. Who am I kidding. I still am. Haha! I was seriously just talking to a friend of mine about your channel. Really great. I love it
Sure, nothing beats an old-fashioned couple of boards for finding the angle of your roof (5:25), but I think an app in your phone might be more convenient and come in handy more often than you might expect. Source: I, too, had a crooked shed that needed straightening.
Nice work dude, and thanks for the wholesome origin story! Your family seem like an awesome bunch! My parents weren’t really creatives or makers, per se, but I definitely remember getting lots of encouragement in trying various crafts and creative activities when I was growing up, and involving me in home improvement projects, basic repairs, gardening, etc. Those experiences undoubtedly instilled a maker-like attitude in me. While I wouldn’t say that I have an artistic desire to express myself, one of my favorite activities is making useful and great looking things for others, who may not be able to make those things themselves.
That was a great video I’m kind of the same way in a sense love to build stuff out of wood unfortunately my dad didn’t show me how to do anything he was more the old fashion he work a lot so pretty much all the stuff that I’ve learned was on my own and me and my son restore old cars build bikes he is my right hand person in all the thing we do together I teach and show him how to build things and fix them he 24yrs old but he is a pretty good fabricator. Thank you for all those awesome video keep them coming.
Charlie Brown Christmas was a staple in my house every Christmas! The Peanuts comic strip in the daily paper and especially the Sunday paper where it was actually in color!!! My kids will never know this.... print is dead... ughhhhhhh! What makes me make?🤔 Too much coffee, to much beer and too much Mexican food (Love Mexican food). But seriously, I grew up on LEGO, Girder and Panel, card board boxes transformed into Cobra hideouts for G.I. Joe to infiltrate, This Old House, New Yankee Workshop, HomeTime with Dean and Joanna and loved the Victorian homes and Castles of England. Went to college, made some iguana cages and speaker boxes, became a home owner and the love of all those things just sprouted in my brain which lead me to renoviating the house, all new mouldings, doors, built-ins etc... then, later in life (in my thirties) I gave up my laboratory background and became a carpenter. This is the short version, it's been a Wild ride man...wild...
Nice story and video mate. Like you my Mrs is an artist and also interior designer so that kinda helps motivate me to keep going plus trying build successful business. I was inspired to do what I do from who became friend of ours who's a professional cabinet maker and build my whole kitchen with me out of live edge sycamore that's were I got the bug from. 🏴👍

I used to watch that show all the time. I think that hgtv station had a big impact on diy. Pretty cool

Trying to find time is so difficult. I find myself going out at 3 in the morning some days just to get time out there.

I latched onto the same freaks on TH-cam and fell in love aswell.
Keep on making brother 🤙

Nice i dig the Santa. I was always into taking stuff apart which then by necessity i had to put back together. Kinda led me into making stuff.
I love taking things apart to see what’s going on inside so much. I rarely put them back together. ADHD I guess. Hahaha!
