      Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I've always been wondering about it. Here in Norway we say "Nederland", instead of "Nether", and the name literally means "Below Land", hence my confusion about the "low lands".

    I am Dutch. For me, this is very normal. You’re born in a country with water, canals, dikes, locks, polders, etc., and that’s just part of life for us. In fact, many people here aren’t even aware of it. In Amsterdam, for example, there is a flood barrier that runs 2 meters above sea level. You hardly notice it-it’s just part of the landscape. If the locks at IJmuiden weren’t functioning, Amsterdam could potentially flood during a storm. We focus on preventive measures.

      Technically the entire system of barriers, damns, dikes, levees, etc, that make up the Delta Works project(of which the Measlandkering (the 6 years one) is just a part) were build over a period of 43 years.
      What did help immensely however was that there was a lot of political will to see the project done, in fact it was known to the Dutch government since the 20's/30's that the flood protection in the south east of the country needed a lot of work, but the 2nd world war postponed any plans and subsequent rebuilding took priority.
      But when disaster struck a commission to designa solution was created almost instantly, and the first plans were made and approved that construction on the first part of the project (Hollandsche IJsselkering) started in january 1954, just slightly less than a year after the disaster.
      And unified political will around the issue of flood protection is lacking in the US from what I understand, afterall, years after disasters and in many place nothing has been done to fix the issues.

    Earth Day: A Dutch solution called "Room for the River" may mitigate flood damage in the future. This approach involves creating more space for rivers to flow during times of high water levels, rather than building more levees and dams. By allowing rivers to flood in controlled areas, the risk of flooding in populated areas can be reduced. This strategy has been successfully implemented in the Netherlands, where the country's low-lying geography makes it particularly vulnerable to flooding. As climate change leads to more frequent and intense weather events, solutions like "Room for the River" are becoming increasingly important for managing flood risks around the world. rivers to flow during times of high water levels, rather than building more levees and dams. Which is what happens. It's not an issue, mainly because the country isn't covered with asphalt. Every building project has to have greenery and most have open water which is directly connected to the rainwater drainage system. Ground water is managed by simply pumping it away into canals and rivers, which themselves have controls for water levels too.

  • @Sailor376also
    @Sailor376also ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Dutch do not get 35 inches of rain in a single event,,, ever. Our mistake is building homes in flood plains, and low seacoasts. The Mississippi should NOT have levees. The Mississippi should have farm land all along its banks. Same with seashores. Every foot of that should be public beach and park land. Someone who builds on the beach should be paying their own insurance. Federal flood insurance came about because the low areas along the Ohio and Mississippi flooded nearly every year,, and destroyed the homes of poor people living in the low areas. No large fancy homes were built there BECAUSE it flooded often. The bottom land was cheap,, poor people could afford it,, and poor housing was built there. Up on the hill was reserved for wealthy people. Flood Insurance,,, and now wealthy people could buy flood insurance and move down to the water front. The water front then became the valuable property. ONLY because the rest of the country was paying to fix the house each time. Annnnd , with wealthy people living in the flood zone,, Lotsa levees got built.
    Every foot of coast line now has an expensive house on it,,, so every storm has lots of expensive houses to destroy. There should be no houses there.
