I can’t describe how much I love both of these songs. I feel like this mashup is not only perfect because of how they fit together musically, but also thematically. Miss Americana is a sort of political metaphor being compared to a highschool football game, and then midnight rain is a retrospective on Taylor’s hometown in a way. Even though they’re technically about different things, the overlapping connections back to previous teenage experience is there. Midnight rain almost feels like a sequel or spin-off to miss Americana to me, with Taylor describing her previous life and why she left it. Miss Americana depicts a picture of what of that part of her life could’ve been, and I just love how perfectly these two songs illustrate all of it.
