I have been since before any other was and I have come to my creation and lived as many men in an effort to help and lead. Little enjoyment have I found and far too much pain i have received from my own creation. However I can say with all honesty that I did find much enjoyment when I was Caesar. Especially when they throw shit at Bibilus

When he got old for life in 44, the idea arose that he would establish a monarchist regime instead of a republican administration. Unwilling to accept this, the aristocrats started preparations to become Cassius with Brutus. B.C. They killed Caesar, who was going to a senate meeting on the 15th of March in 44.
I don't know if the show addressed it, but beyond the perception of his Populist tactics ( _Populares_ was one of the three factions that had developed over time in Roman politics- the third faction, the 'Moderates' were less official, & more nebulous in their numbers & allegiances. By the Caesar's time, Cicero was known as a leading moderate) - which others before him had certainly employed (like his uncle-by-marriage, Marius- & Marius' one-time ally, & later great rival, Sulla- in fact, Sulla supposedly said he, 'Saw many a Marius in Caesar' - & ironically, his persecution of a young Caesar {as an individual connected to Marius} ultimately made the latter's military future possible, after depriving Caesar of his inheritance- & an office that would have precluded any connection to the army, or even ability to leave the city) - & the wealth that his military victories poured into the city, were slowly, but surely buying the support of the people for any & all of his actions.
This was also paired with the strong belief that- though he had pointedly refused a crown, earlier- he *had* adopted certain aspects of dress that had been reserved for the old Kings of Rome; like red boots, a chair with a back in the Senate (a 'throne'), & the _toga picta_ (previously only meant for triumphs, after the establishment of the Republic).
He also had the title, 'Dictator' (a legitimate title given to a general in time of extreme emergency in Rome, but only limited to 6 months, traditionally) bestowed on him multiple times- & later was able to be acclaimed 'Dictator for Life' - essentially that was as good as _Rex_ / 'King', in the minds of the _Optimates_ (ultra-conservatives)...
It also wasn't lost on the clique-ish Senate, that Caesar had also increased the numbers of the Senate, through raising both common people, & allied foreign leaders from Gaul to the office, supposedly as a means of rewarding them for their loyalty- meaning these people would owe their position (& their votes) to Caesar, not to the senatorial institution & official election.
The reason the conspirators elected to act- when they did in the end, however - was because he was planning a campaign against Parthia (the ground where many had, & would continue to be smashed)- & the conspirators feared that, if he won there- he *would* be able to become king, unquestionably.
And he couldn't be let leave the city, & take possession of his army.
There were some 60 senators who would be involved in the plot- however, Caesar only had 20 or so wounds- with little more than half of them being substantial, & only one proving fatal- according to the historical autopsy.
Just goes to show you: in any given group-project, there are the people who do their share, & there'll always be some who coast on the efforts of others, lol...
