Almost finished with my first set of spur straps. Definitely needed this! Wondered how I was going to bevel while I was working lol, but all of it is a learning process to take with me onto other projects. You’re videos and information are top notch, and help a lot. Thank you and I appreciate the time you put into the videos!!
Thanks Joe, I would have screwed that up, in my mind if you bevel one side in, you’d bevel the other side out. But you keep going out. Looks much better. Thanks again.
I'd suggest that you use the term "prominent" rather than "dominant." That's more correct, I think, because the stem or petal isn't really dominant, but it is prominent. (It stands out the most.) Good work!
Hey Joe! Is it possible that you can do a video on how to make a weight bag? I know it seems simple, but idk what leather/material to use, what material you use to fill it, and how to close the bag? It’s oils be very much appreciated! Thanks for all you do!
I use a weight bag usually used for SCUBA diving. If you have a local SCUBA Dive shop, check out the weight bags used for diving. You can find bags of various weights 1-5 pounds.
Hi Joe, I`d say I`m still a novice in leather tooling & I`ve recently bought a Barry King no2 checkerd steep Beveler . I`m still learning Beveling and I`m struggling with getting my Beveler to "slide " as I`m running along the swivel knife cuts. It appears that the Beveler drags with no fluency as I try to move along as you appear to do when you are Beveling. You seem to slide along like a hot knife going through Butter. I try to copy your method ,but no matter how hard I try, it just won`t Slide along "Nicely "as I start Tapping after the first drop in of the beveler, . Its as if the checkering stops the Beveler from moving along fluently ,causing the Beveler to drag on the leather .???? Does it sound maybe to you that I`ve not got my leather belt wet enough do you think .? What I do is, wet my leather belt with a few passes of water & then let it dry a bit till the color starts lightening .Then start to bevel .
Could/would you include either in the description or video name the tools you are using. I have a full shop, I bought out at saddle maker but most are old Tandy tools and Im considering upgrading most of my daily/frequent tools to Barry Kings or equivilant.

Hello Joe, I wanted to ask you if you could indulge an old man a question, can you wet mold with a tooled project? That is, if you tool a piece of leather can you wet mold it into a knife sheath for example?
Hey there! Yes you can. You just have to be careful not to distort the tooling too much but if you have good depth to start with then you’ll be fine. I would just try to be ready to mold it right as I was getting done tooling when there was still moisture in the leather and could just add a bit on moisture to the back maybe.

A real big deal to me is how clean and wide your knife carving is. Mine is so light and hard to follow whereas yours wvwn I could follow with my beveler, ir makes mimne so hard to follow without leaving the lines, frustrating as hell to a beginner!!!!!!! Your videos are the best
Takes a while for these to even start making sense when you’re brand new. …because you’re watching this and trying to follow along with the big ol beat up turd you’ve got on your bench in front of you… but you don’t realize he’s whackin away on some really nice 12 oz skirting leather with the super clean hitting King Steep Bevelers that cost more than all of those stamps in that kit you got there….and you’re using your cheap tand6’s which will work, but will never give you a bevel like what you’re watching and beating on your tandys with a hammer and some funky 7 oz belly leather that you don’t yet understand that it will never look like what you’re watching…. But when u figure that out, and understand why….then you are learning enough to start to be able to knock out some decent looking stuff.
I like the videos but man you have to stop rambling so much. I constantly fast forward through your videos to the meat of the content. Cut like 3-5 Mins.
