I'm old. I cooked McD's pies back when they were actually good. Let me give you some hints. McD's pies were frozen when they were put in the fryer. In fact they had to be kept very cold. I think the freezer was around minus 10 f and that was critical to the timing. The raw pies were coated with a thin layer of sugar glaze that made them bubble up on the outside. Later, they started making baked pies which aren't nearly as good.
Oh!!! I had most rest of the set of these as a kid. There was a milkshake maker that was pudding based, the hamburger maker was rice cripes with vanilla wafer buns, and fries were bread. We never managed to find the Nuggets or Apple Pie maker. Honestly it was a lot of fun to play with and easy to refill the ingredients to make more. No ordering specialty stuff. A lot more fun and easy to get than an Easy Bake Oven.
I had all but the pie and milkshake maker. The burger one was king, imho. The fries one sucked, but maybe Barry could come up with a fun way to use it. I also had a McDonald's Cookies maker (Remember when they had those??) which was easily the second best of the bunch. made with peanut butter, Graham crackers and Nestle Quik, if I remember correctly
The McPizza was launched in the mid 80’s only to be discontinued around 2000. However, there is still a place in Orlando, Florida that still to this day, serves the McPizza.
I was awake all last night wondering if it will McDonald’s apple pie, thank you for answering that question. I will sleep well tonight. 😉they also djd a McDonald’s milkshake maker, you need to find that next
I got one of those kits from a thrift shop for like 50 cents when I was a kid. I ended up using some home-canned cinnamon applesauce in place of pie filling to avoid pie blowouts. It worked pretty well, especially sprinkled with cinnamon sugar.
Fried a lot of those when i worked there. Those pies can pretty volatile, when they are just slightly cracked and you put them into the fryer, frozen btw. When those damaged ones starting to puff up they suddenly burst their filling into the hot oil. Got a few ouchies from them! And there was also a coating on them wich was quite starchy. Was probably starch and water, wich was the reason the pies get that blistered and bubbly outside layer.
Barry, been a while! Here's my suggestions: • Brioche bread stuffed with sausage and egg, made into french toast. • Cornbread stuffed with steak and potato. • Yorkshire pudding stuffed with a thick gravy and sausage. Throwing out ideas my brain hole had.
This was so fun and creative to watch. My kids loved this toy when they were young. We never thought to try things other than apple pies. Also, I've never seen crustless bread, how fun.
I guess you could used beaten egg to "glue" it? Also, I think the only reason the first one failed was because bread was not elastic enough. Love your videos!
ohhh yes! i love these little makers. i watched videos of them on yt but never had them because old and, i'm british lol. would be fun to see the others they made!
Wow! So fun! I was actually just talking about these toys! They also made a burger, fries, and drink stations. I don't recall if there was more but I had those back in the day 😆
Ive made fried appke pies really easily. I just use egg roll wrappers & pan fry in 2-3 inces of oil. I also use those flavored cream cheese. Wildberry on the inside & dusted with sugar is awesome. I also make savory ones with chive/green onion & ham. I've used refried beans & cheese, ham & swiss cheese with or without the green onion cream cheese. I don't cut holes in it though & i seal the edges with just water. Then make sure it's really well sealed so nothing leaks out. Theres nothing funner, ie scary, as having the cream cheese start seeping out. But it doesn't happen much & you can quickly scoop it out. I use a wire spoon thing & a metal spoon to help me flip them & then to scoop it out.
Hi there Barry. I’m new to your channel and this is the first video of yours I have watched. I think you should get this 3d printed and sell it hahaha. I definitely would want to try making these pies using that machine
Totally unrelated kinda... i remember you telling us Chloë was going 'byia' in school every time someone said 'seal'. Weren't you called in? Hilarious! Great gadg!!!
The seal pun made look like a nutter not long ago at a family event 😂 playing a trivia game and when my dad got the correct answer " seal " I then couldn't help myself and obviously has to say " bayaya " , and I can safely say after the looks I received, I doubt I'll be invited again 😂😂😂
I didnt click this video because i wasnt pulled in by the description, but so glad i actually watched it, great video, my suggestion would be smores with marshmallows and chocolate, just not sure of the base, bread/pastry etc, I'd think a puff pastry shell with marshmallows and chocolate would be a great idea 👌😋
The press needs a certain thickness to press the two halves together. you might have managed to make the mac n cheese if you had doubled up the pasta sheet after boiling it. That said I'm in my arm chair, you actually cooked the things.
You can try the pasta one again just try to let everything cool down before you seal it and use a flour paste to seal the edges before you crimp it. Also wanton or egg roll wraps make wanton filling and egg roll filling.
I made egg rolls for the first time a few weeks ago and it reminded me of the old school mcdonalds pies. Do you get egg rolls in england? Here you can buy the wrappers fresh at most supermarkets and asian markets all have them. Its similar a bit in texture but thicker I guess. Maybe some dumpling wrap might work better. Springroll wrappers are completely different much crispier and like phylo pastry kinda but not layered.
I'm not sure if you might know but you can find Pizza pie in India. It's actually the only pie item that has been in the menu ever since McDonald's started in India and it has been constant. It's a vegetarian item and it's not called a pie rather "Pizza McPuff". It's very good and my best memories of childhood include burning the top of my mouth and tongue eating with and cooling it down with an iced tea. LOL But you should definitely try to make a homemade version of it for there are multiple recipes of it. It would definitely be lovely to see you recrreate some other vegetarian items from Indian McDonald's and get Phoebe to try them. OMG it sound so exciting!!!!!
The chocolate and caramel was basically their take on the deep fried mars bar. You could almost certainly use sweets like cadbury's heros or quality street (unwrapped of course) as fillings for a sweet pastry. Something else to try would be to make them some an ice cream filling using more of a filo style pastry, pop them in the freezer to make sure the centres cold and flash them in a fryer to crisp only the outside.
I'm guessing the washing it in water to melt better is getting rid of whatever they put in to make the cheese hold shape, I think its the same kind of wood pulp stuff thats in ice cream
you might be able to do the pasta one with fresh made pasta, I've been making the little hats pasta and ravioli with ricotta filling for a bit now and so you might be able to roll out some fresh pasta, wet the corners and seal it that way. i might try it myself with how much pasta i cook now.
You need to do a strawberry-rhubarb pie. The combination is divine. Also, as a fellow paprika fanatic, I would heartily suggest you do a fried cheese pie with smoked paprika sprinkled in the filling. Trust me, you'll love it.
Hi Barry ! I have been watching you for a long time now and I really enjoy your videos. I have a project for you ! I love Thorntons chocolates but my favourites are their Viennese Truffles. I would love it if you could duplicate these ! With them being truffles, obviously they are made from double cream and chocolate, but what else do they use to get that unique, delicious flavour ? And the crisp chocolate shell. I know you can do this - I have every faith in you ! Andy from Birkenhead
You should probably get a spider strainer or other kind of mesh/net scoop for the deep fryer, it would make getting things in and out easier than tongs.
The McD apple pie was one of the very few food items of theirs that I enjoyed. Then they stopped frying them, as a move to 'healthier' menu items, and baked them instead. Now, I eat fried food possibly twice a month, and really liked the mouth feel of the pie - it was stupidly hot, crumbly and sweet - in a totally different way to every other pie. Now it's just a baked pie, and I'm not so keen on them anymore. There was a 'Mc Pizza', but it was a tremendous failure, and I think McD try to pretend it never happened.😆😆😆 You might want to try a 'Mc Fish Finger pie'.
oh my gosh barry lewis figured out how to make a hot pocket. (note this is what we americans call a sausage roll) (note I am also kidding, but also only somewhat)
so true but not too, since this tool can make multiple things with different breadings like pasta, croissant, filled donuts and fried pies of sweet and savory. It's cool inspiration for any cook. Challenge accepted 🙃
Taking that to the limit with those ideas. The McDonald's oven is a convection oven set at 375°F. The Pizza Pie was designed to be baked as long as the fruit pies at 12 minutes.
These look a bit like a traditional street food dish called "pastel" I tried out in Brazil. Lots of different filling options in those, sweet and savoury. Maybe you could try making something like that with this...
I also would have deep fried the apple pie bites for about a minute, then sprinkled them with granulated sugar & cinnamon powder if I were making batches & scoff the lot! Could this thing be reverse engineered & 3D printed? It looks to be entirely made from plastic. Wouldn't brushing the parts that the pastry touches with oil help it slip off when removing it?
Trust me you didn't miss much with the galaxy caramel pie. It had so little flavour. It was actually really disappointing and didn't taste anything like galaxy caramel, It was more of a custard with a slight tinge of caramel colour. It wasn't that good
I think the pasta one would work better if you use freshly made pasta. My recipe for pasta is 1 cup flour, a bit of salt, 3 egg yolks, and a little bit of water to bring it together if dry. Kneed it for 8 to 10 minutes and then let it rest in the refrigerator for at least a half hour.
McDonald’s sold Pizzas in the UK in the early 90s, they were great, just standard pizzas. I had a mash potato and bacon in an apple pie casing in Japan and a sweet corn one in Thailand Japanese one was amazing!!!!!!!
That last one looked like a "hostess" brand twinkie snack cake. Besides the dessert ones, the mcpizza and the breakfast pie are the two I would love to try. That pizza one is like a giant tostitos pizza roll.
You could try toasted sandwich pie, homemade pop tart pie, doughnut pie and a chicken and leek pie 😂 A few things came to mind. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it 😊
@mrbarrylewis yes it did but I use any thing I use cookie dough , pizza dough and other things, they do have a fries maker mac toy which only use bread

The UK version of the pies are deep fried? Ours were baked, I remember putting them on a tray and into the quick oven we had... even burned my arm on the tray once. As for the mcPizza pies I never had those but while working for a convienence store (Allsups) we came up with the idea to deep fry the hot pockets, both pizza and ham & Cheese. We worked graveyard shift so manager wasn't around to stop us but it was a hit with our regular stoner customers lol. That actually how our manager found out they came in during the day asking for one...
What would you apple pie maker? I loved the scotch egg!
Scotch eggs are awesome 😋😋😋
Beef taco and cheese filling lol
I loved the galaxy apple pie sooo much!
What, no Big Mac McPie. Missed opportunity.
Not really a mcpie but what about 'fried beer' ......honest it's a real thing

They then added the cinnamon sugar once they were out of the frier later on when as you said not all that good. I don't buy them anymore.
BTW, that pie maker is for baked pies not deep fried.(That's why there are slots in the top.) 😂
@@jasonread7234 True. Patch the slots and then you can fry them.
@@jasonread7234 I was thinking the same thing. I believe in the UK they still get the fried pies. At least they did when I was there in 2014

it must be out of order to be authentic ;)
its nice to have such a random question answered
Can't. Ice cream machine is down.
People call food scientists like you and Mr. Sausage madmen, but you are the ones keeping the art alive.
Nothing like watching Mr. Sausage making litteral poison lol
Perogies! Looks like a natural for perogies. Dim sum dumplings. PBJ. Fluffer-nutters.
So many possibilities. Be a fun gadget for a family kitchen.
Deffo, McD's should bring them back!
you mean pierogi
The way Barry says “muck” for “Mc” will forever live in my brain
Probably before your time, but Johnny Carson used to do this. Drove me crazy.
That's just how British people say it. Ashens does it too.
@@riffhammeronwell then you’ve never seen a british person before
I also say muck, but it's actually supposed to be pronounced 'Mac'. The exact same way as you'd say Big Mac.
I can't stand when someone says "Mac Donald's" it's pronounced mick, so, "mick Donald's" I'm sure it's probably interchangeable but not for me. 😂
