I used to love being high up in a tree. The higher the better. Until I fell out of one. I'm now afraid of heights. Weird how the mind woks. After the broken bones mended I stayed on the ground permanently.
I lived on two acres that was covered in huge white oak trees for near 20 years and every year at least one of those darn things would come down in wind storms. I was so glad to sell that pig and get out of there! There were several close calls including one that fell across the front of the house and took out the rain gutter and landed mere feet in front of me on the front deck!
Must be getting to old for tree work. All I see is 9:40 in and the ground man letting the branch run with the rope behind him. Hope he sees this as a helpful tip and not a keyboard know it all. Safety first!
@@hometown215 All I see is someone trying to critique a Professional from the comfort of their living room! You realize it's going through a Porta wrap right? So even if it did get caught on him some how. It'd literally stop the branch dead in its tracks! It wouldn't even knock him off his feet! In order for it to be a dangerous situation like you claim. They'd have to be taking extremely heavy pieces, with like half a wrap or no wrap, in order for it to be as dangerous as you are trying to make it out to be. You critiqued yourself, the moment you critiqued them! You open up your mouth just long enough. For someone else to be able to critique you from the comfort of their living room.. How's it feel? Only difference is, I actually know what I'm talking about and have obviously done a lot more rigging than you have. These boys may very well not be perfect! But they are doing it in a very safe manner and they all are aware of one anothers presence. I get what you are trying to say, but in this case. It really goes without saying. I assumed since this video posted that you made it down safely but when that wind started picking up it got me nervous just watching it and I'm three thousand miles away. So I commend you for your balls of steal because that was one hell of a sketchy job. Other then that you are a great rigger because every piece you fell came down right where it was supposed to and great communication with your ground crew as well. You look like you got it together. A man with experience. Nothing wrong with that. It has been a long held opinion of mine that these eucalyptus trees have no business being any where near houses. These things are house killers as is made obvious in the video. Here in California where I live you find house nestled in the middle of these eucalyptus groves and it all ways makes me wonder if the people living in these houses even know the danger it puts them in. All it takes is one branch to break off to destroy part or all of your house and possibly even kill you. The occupants of that house got off lucky. I hope they had insurance that covers that kind of thing. These trees are so heavy and they are not very stable or at least the ones grown here in California aren't and they get so tall. You had to be around three hundred feet up in that one from what it looked like. Plus there is the way they react to fires by exploding that is not good. So I personally would not live any where near one of these things.

They will also drop limbs if one has grown to big or if there was a loss of limbs on the other side of the tree causing an imbalance in weight making the tree unstable. They will drop limbs to correct for that. Or at least that's the way I understand it. But regardless of the reason why they definitely do drop huge limbs and you don't want to be sleeping in your bed underneath the thing when it cuts loose. Mater of fact recently I had to clear a large limb from a clients driveway that came down crushing his fence. It was a good 10 to 11 inches at it's thickest point. Probably not enough to go through the roof but big enough to damage it though.
Nice bit of work, the last bit of top that you took off was a good example of why you should always put two side cuts in to stop rip outs catching your strop. Well done from a UK Arb company.👍

If you are referring to the initial ascent, he certainly had a line on his hip, ready to be set upon arrival in the crown. Can't always have a line set ahead of time, if that's what you meant. I mean, I'm sure plenty of guys these days have that as an expectation, but it's not always realistic.

Ever had to explain to an incredulous client, how in a situation like this, when the one side falls, the root ball being unlocked destabilizes the remaining spar/root ball? I've been there scores of times, when they look at you like you're jiving them, when all you're really trying to do is not get hurt....🤣🤣🤣
Crazy, how every tree trunk has its own things. Some trees become a nightmare when even just slightly wet....others are fine until they freeze...I a spiked a 6' diameter completely rotten White Oak a few years ago, which had literally 8"-9" deep of pure MUSH for bark...🤣....it was like an old fashioned Keystone Cops slapstick comedy.....😜

13:40 getting a bit risky reaching over the saw, especially your positioning, i know it happens but those moments where we do those things can end up costing you alot. when i started they had me using a silky to teach me how to position myself for 2 handed operation, im not a safety weeine i think its perfectly fine to one hand a top handle, especially when getting the sucker growth off. but reaching over the saw like that gave me a mini heart attack
Lovely job - I would happily have seen much more of this that you edited out. It's a bit of a pity that such a lovely stand of Mountain Ash were built underneath - they would have been magnificent when they all stood together. Was this near Olinda? A lot of European Ash are having to come down at the moment because of Chalara and where they grow in company with others they develop the same smooth bark with long gaps between stubs as the Regnans. That's given me a bit of excitement on a couple of occasions and for the slimmer ones I now routinely cross over the lanyard in front of me or even take a full turn around the trunk to give more rope contact, even though it slows the climb.

The timber is very good, the difficulty that arises is that many small independent sawmills have disappeared, the few large corporate sawmills are not interested as there is not enough profit for them, as a result it is just wasted.
I know the feeling of a tree coming down on top of a house all to well. Had a massive oak basically split the house i was renting in half during Hurricane Sally. I still have no clue how nobody was killed

As a young man I always wondered why these dumb people out in the country where I lived removed the trees close to the house that could provide wonderful shade. After having gone through a tornado that violently shook our house and then jumped over our house destroying the barn, thank GOD and learning that our previously owned house in another town had received tornado damage and become an old man I now realize who were the smart ones and who was the one not so smart.

When its hot they drop large limbs to conserve moisture. Deadly limbs on still windless afternoons. Plant deciduous trees around housing.
