    So glad you reviewed these Teoh. My son, who lives in Singapore, surprised me with the "Plein Air" set when he came to visit last summer (I live in Maryland). I believe he bought them at Overjoyed, an amazing art store. yay! I've been wanting to try a pr242 red and a cobalt turquoise or teal for ages so this will be a much more affordable option once available.ive recently bought my first 2 pans of indian yellow and English red from white nights and I love them. everything else i have are winsor newton, m.graham or daniel smithers dried from tubes and the white nights are great to rewet and fantastic pigment load, I dont find the 2 I have so far in anyway chalky.

    The tubes and pans are available open stock now in the UK and are incredibly cheap for the quality of paint you get. - It may not compare against the top tier brands like DS or MG, but its a very good paint that certainly holds its own with other artist grade watercolours, and most significantly, it has knocked top tier Student brands out of the park with performance and affordability. Coming in at well less than Cotman prices now... so even at entry level it's difficult to justify student grade brands any more, if White Nights are available to you as these are a better choice.

    • @soon_to_emerge
      @soon_to_emerge 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are even cheaper in Russia. I don't know the prices in UK, but full pans are priced $2 on Jackson's Art, and for this money I can get 10ml tube in my local store.
      In the past they were a bit worse (at least for me). Blues and browns were weaker than today. I'm glad they are modernizing their line of products.

    Hi Teoh, super review as usual. I have a full set of White Nights watercolours (not the new ones) and they are definitely not my favourite watercolours. They seem to have a chalky look sometimes - a little gouache. I do use them for my sketch book occasionally when I want nice strong colours. I am in Africa at the moment and they lend themselves to the vibrancy of African clothing, red cars, and other subjects that require a somewhat more powerful statement.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, they have many colours that are opaque or semi transparent. That explains the chalky gouache look.

      @@teohyc i have seen many ppl who buy the lower quality nevskaya palitra watercolors but think they are white nights & call them that. or even the yarka paints. i see some sellers on ebay that sell he lower quality as white nights also. i think this is a big reason you see so many ppl talk of their chalkiness. i own a huge selection of white nights but they are all hand selected being mostly single pigment transparent paints & i have no complaints even comparing them to the top brands except schminke horadam, i don't have any of those.., yet. :D

    Please dont give to much to this opaque and semi opaque rating. When i started i sorted the opaque colors out, because i believe that the were not good colors. With some experience i found they very useful (Cad yellow med, cad orange..) When you use this colors like normal watercolors you won't have problems, that they cover up lineart. Only if you pick up the color massivly you get an opaque color.

    Oh these look interesting! I hope they come to Jacksons soon. PB36 is cobalt chromite while genuine cerulean blue is PB35, a cobalt stannate. Many brands substitute a light shade of chromite because the pigment is cheaper. It's never quite the same colour though, always brighter and greener, so worth looking for genuine ceruleans made with cobalt stannate.

    Hi~I know it's been way over a month since this video was posted, but I was wondering if you (or anyone) could recommend to me whether I should buy the white nights 12 set or the new 9 set (or even open stock, if that is a better deal! If so, from which store should I buy them?). I really like the colours of the new set (except I wonder if I would still be able to mix neutral/earth tones), but obviously the older set comes with 3 extra colours and a case. However, it seems like the opposite problem with that set-too many earth tones and not enough bright colours.
    They retail for almost the same price on amazon ca, so I'm really hoping someone will compare them or at least suggest which one I should get. Thanks! :)

      I haven't come across the ultimate 3-colour primary combination yet. There's always some limitation. If you have a palette that can produce a vibrant orange, then that palette probably won't be able to produce a vibrant purple. I've not used the liquid charcoal before but now I'm interested

      Teoh does a lot of limited color videos, look on his channel page at the play lists "Watercolor and Mixes" has 44 videos so far and many are the limited videos. I counted 8 he has already done. You can see if any he has tried so far appeals to you. I love watching those & still watch them, they are just fun & inspiring! lol

      @@teohyc This is true in any paint medium (I use watercolour, gouache, acrylic and oil). Yellow and blue don't always make green, as there's just no such thing as a pure hue like we imagine in our heads. Pigments will always lean warm or cool and prefer to mix one way or the other. 8 colours is a minimum colour palette in most mediums IMO.

    should i go for white nights, mijello or holbein

      White Nights
      + Good pricing
      + Good quality
      + Good for beginners looking for their first set
      - Individual colours are difficult to find. Usually sold as sets
      - Many colours that are opaque or semi transparent.
      Mijello Mission Gold
      + Good quality
      + More expensive but still worth the money for the quality
      + Their 9 or 12 tube 7ml sets are quite value for money
      Holbein
      I can't say much since I don't use them.
      But my overall recommendation is get the brand that's easiest and cost effective for you. Think of how you're going to replace the colours in the future. Many of the prominent brands have pretty comparable quality anyway.

      @@teohyc Thanks for this comment. Was curious where you saw White Nights in comparison to other lines. Sounds like it's a good introductory level.

      Go for the Holbein if you can afford it. I have a White Nights set and although they are wonderful paints, the holbein paints are quite a bit better. Mijello are overpriced in my opinion, delivering good performance at a much too high price for what you are getting. Another brand to consider is Daniel Smith and Sennelier, both of these are equally as good as Holbein. But of course Holbein, Daniel Smith and Sennelier are all expensive they are certainly worth the money.

      @@3rgoproxxy Daniel Smith are far better than Sennellier or Holbein, both of which use filler (Sennellier in particular uses a large amount.)
      Daniel Smith, M. Graham, and Kremer Pigments are all of the highest quality, focusing on single pigment formulations and no filler (white or colorless particles added to the paint in place of pigment.) Next would be Winsor & Newton, which uses some filler, then Schmincke and Holbein.
      Sennellier, despite the name, history, price, and reputation, is packed with fillers, has lightfastness issues, and has tons of multi pigment formulations.
      As far as Mission Gold and White Nights, there isn't as much information about them out there, but the general consensus is that Mission Gold is of higher quality (at least with their pure pigment line) and White Nights is of lower quality.

    Teoh I have been unsubbing from a lot of the artist here on TH-cam because really it's just a scene now and I hate scenes. Thankfully you are not part of that and I really enjoy all of your content and I hope to someday be able to urban sketch like you do so I can show the world what Denver looks like. Anyways I have the 36 pan set of White Nights and I love it..
