    This particular lesson brought such a feeling of love for the Savior to my heart! As I thought about how and why He offered to serve the Father and us as our Redeemer without seeking glory for himself, my heart filled up with an immense sense of gratitude, admiration and appreciation for Him and everything He stood for from the beginning. I feel so certain that I loved Him with all my soul then and will love Him forever. Thank you for helping me obtain that increase in my testimony!

    I listened to your lesson this morning. There are no words to express how it touched me. I am ashamed of the poor example I have set for my children. I repent and pray for God for His forgiveness 🙏.

      We all wish we were better examples around children, friends, and family members. The beauty of the gospel is that we are here to learn, grow, and improve. We can change and we can be forgiven. God is good.

    What a wonderful lesson, thank you. In our Heavenly Father's plan - we as His children need to change and become like The Lord inorder to live with Him in the Celestual Kingdom. If we weren't held responsible for our choices, we wouldn't change and would possibly become more devilish - sounds like we would all go to live with the devil. I'm so grateful for our Heavenly Father's plan of Happiness and Salvation and for our Saviors Atonement !!!

      How interesting that outward appearance became a mark to let people know which people were the important ones in that social structure. Clothing was an important mark in that society to let people know who were most important, evidently.

    The Spirit speaks so strongly to me when you teach. Your insights today about Nehor's and Amlici's stories, comparing the council in heaven, were so profound. I love learning the meaning of the words because it helps put things into perspective. Another one knocked out of the park today. I loved how you talked about God asking 'whom shall I send?' Even Jesus had the choice. The Atonement happened because of choice. Thank you once again.

    There is a more secular way of looking at the teachings in Mosiah 29: Rights and responsibilities. Either way it is a marvelous lesson for our day. Many today want rights without responsibility. Some are even willing to give up their rights just so they don't have to take responsibility! The interesting things about the Book of Mormon is that in Alma, the next chapter, the Lord shows us what happens when we consider relinquishing responsibility. Rights and responsibility, it is the way of the Lord. What a book!

    I needed to hear this lesson today. Last week I watched it not even half way, got carried away with stuff happening around me, esp with a marital problem happening in my family atm. Today, I decided to watch it again this time I completed the whole video. Your lesson has really helped me understand the problem that’s been happening in my family. The way you explained Agency & accountability and how the Devil is alive today trying to destroy our agency helps me understand & be more accepting to the problem that has happened. I needed this lesson today. I am struggling to keep hopeful in these times. I have been heartbroken by the hatred and violence, and it seems too many in power are intent in perpetuating it in order to continue status quo and continue to subjugate our brothers and sisters of color. I hear hate and disregard, no love or willingness to truly listen by most of our leaders.
    I'm not sure how the testimony at the end helped my deep sadness, but it did. Thank you.

    Dear Tyler and Taylor, we thoroughly enjoy your weekly lessons. We are converts to the church (44 yrs ago) and have studied a lot, but we are still learning so many profound truths from your lessons that we never picked up on before. It has greatly increased our love for the Book of Mormon - and we loved it before! We refer to your lessons as "dessert" after we finish reading the assigned scriptures! We are wondering if (and hoping) you will be teaching a weekly "Come Follow Me" lesson next year...and the next...and the next. We could sure use your insights as we go through the Bible!

Made me think of current politics a bit clearer, and to weather the storm and still stand for truth and righteousness while so many others who do not know, panic and fight rather than see the truth with calmness of mind and simple, kind, giving and sturdy love and easy, rightful laws. We live in a beautiful world, and over here in Australia, we must be involved in the government if we are to see fairness and just freedom and liberty for all people, and we need to stand for our beliefs. Powerful Scripture Block today T&T Brothers !! "How to create a Society of Peace" circa 88 BC BUT how about circa 2020? The principles discussed in this Podcast are as RELEVANT today as back then. I like the quote from Hollywood's Moses (Charleton Heston) that I've quoted to my Seminary classes, "There is no freedom without the Law" and so it is for us today. BUT, as you correctly stated, "how big does the Book of Rules have to get in order for families and society to enjoy a peaceful life? The CLOSER to God we become, the fewer the rules that are needed. The Children of Israel couldn't quite catch this vision and consequently suffered as a result. We teach correct principles and let them govern themselves a famous Prophet once told us. Better to Teach and minister than to Judge and force !! BTW, I really enjoyed the quote from CS Lewis who is one of my favorites, can you get back to me WHERE that's found !! SOUND DOCTRINE. Thank you my friends !!!

      Wrong animal reference. But quote is from Great Divorce. "There is but one good; that is God. Everything else is good when it looks to Him and bad when it turns from Him. And the higher and mightier it is in the natural order, the more demoniac it will be if it rebels. It’s not out of bad mice or bad fleas you make demons, but out of bad archangels."

    I think this one is SO very well done, to help us get, from the BOM, things that should affect how we think and behave in less general ways.... I feel very strongly that this is something we should all be viewing and considering in this particular election season. Some things here seem relevant to that consideration. Of course there are other topics that are equally of great value in our personal righteous spiritual life.

    As a British citizen now living in America, I have seen a profound difference in the way the man on the street thinks, how he views those in power, especially kings (in my lifetime, a queen). There is a worshipful attitude towards the monarch, a deference which seems to rob the people of good judgment and common sense.
    It is very interesting to see that unrighteousness has prevailed among royalty for generations. We are seeing the culmination of this today in this particular monarchy with divorces, scandal and even abandonment of royal life.
    During the past 50 years I have seen the goal posts shift. It was forbidden for a royal to marry a commoner up until about 1970. Now the future kings have both done that along with their siblings, including marriage to divorced people, which also was forbidden.
    Immoral behavior among the current royal family is now viewed as normal and sets a precedent for the rest of the country and world to follow.
    When I learned that Prince William had been living with his girlfriend for 9 years before they married in what the British see as a holy place with the bride dressed in pure white, I do not wonder about the words of the minister who was uniting them. Frankly I thought that the young couple looked bored and seemed uncomfortable in a house of worship. I did not watch the ceremony live even though my fellow Americans were swooning at the pageantry. It just all seemed so hypocritical.
    But then, they are living what they were raised with. Good people doing charitable works perhaps, but God will not be mocked.
    How things have changed in 70 years. In the 1950s people who had sexual relations before marriage used to go quickly and quietly to a register office (justice of the peace) and had a certain degree of shame that they did not qualify to wed in a church. Not any more!

      As a uk citizen this is very true. The Royals no more lead by example (the Queen tries her best, bless her), the government are terrible examples. But the Lord knows what's in their hearts, what I've seen of William and Kate they seem to have good hearts. As the uk and most countries don't have good leaders examples to follow, we need to follow just one example and one King and that's God......as it says in Alma 4:15, He will not fail us.

    Great job you guys are doing. Some questions:
    1. Mosiah 21:15 "the Lord... began to soften the hearts of the Lamanites". We see this in the scriptures but just how does the Lord do this, without overriding the agency of the individual?
    2. In the marvelous King Benjamin chapters, why did King Benjamin never mention baptism? (unless I missed it)
    3. Mosiah 25:3 where the Lamanites are mentioned as being the must numerous, and this is often mentioned in the BofM. Any thoughts as to why the Lamanites always seem to be far more numerous than the Nephites???
    I know you can only cover so much each week, and the emphasis ought to be on the things we know, but I often have great interest in some of the other aspects of these wonderful scriptures which I find joy in pondering about and considering.
    Thanks!

      1. The Lord works on us with the spirit, experiences, and memories, and we do the rest: thinking, reflecting, planning changing. He leads us to water, and we then drink :)
      2. The first baptism recorded in the BOM is Mosiah 18. Before that, 2 Nephi 31 baptism is mentioned. It appears that King Benjamin's speech was modeled on the covenant God made with His people at Sinai (see Exodus 20) which did not include baptism. For more on those covenants, see my book: www.amazon.com/Covenant-Path-Bible-Book-Mormon/dp/1951341031.
      3. Great question about BOM populations and demographics. Many scholars have written about this, here are a few starting points.

    I am stuck by the irony that we (current US citizenry) seem to be constantly clamoring for more and more laws to be written up and enacted. We want to offload personal responsibility to our civil leaders. Government becomes more powerful yet we ask for them to do ever more. Hubris and pride seem at an all time high. There seems to be a direct relationship between more laws and more lawlessness. It’s refreshing to see things from a scriptural perspective. We must learn from those lessons. History may not always repeat itself but at least it rhymes.

      th-cam.com/video/tIl57cchRqs/w-d-xo.html Watch this to understand the proper role of government. This should be shared with students from about 14 years up. Our youth are not being taught the proper role of government which is to PROTECT our God-given rights but NOT to PROVIDE handouts to citizens...such as food, housing, education, subsidies, etc. Our children are being taught that socialism is good...which it certainly is not! Government needs to be limited (as spelled out in our Constitution), not unlimited.

    Tyler, I believe the doctrine Devil is outlined by the three antichrists which have a common theme of being saved in your sins rather than being saved from your sins. The Plan of God allowing us to become like of Father, the author of the plan versus an easier plan where there is no law and no consequence for our actions. Lehi uses the logic that if there is no law there is not God. By destroying God, Lucifer becomes the author of the alternative plan where we don't have the mortal experience and we never achieve the lofty heights of being like our Father, but we don't have to suffer the difficulties of mortality. The antichrist teaching the same doctrine where Lucifer continues to take the place of God by proposing a plan that allows us to become like him, the author of the alternative plan. Just my take on this issue.

    Thank you for this video! I have a question, because I am curious, so would it be better if the law provides options in order for our agency to be used even if we are against it? For example, if abortion was legalised, would that be considered as best?

    • @taylorhalverson3052
      @taylorhalverson3052 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question and a difficult question. What we have to ask ourselves is how much of our morality do we legislate on others who may not share our moral view points. If I make someone live as I want them to live, am I contributing to freedom and agency? Difficult problem to consider. Agency always exists, but at different levels. Plus there are consequences for how we use our agency. In the secular realm, there are man-made laws with consequences regarding abortion. In terms of God's laws, He has established other expectations and consequences regarding abortion. Though we know that modern leaders acknowledge cases where it may be admissible. Again, great question that requires a longer conversation.

    So if Nehor was asking for money for substance and living costs and we deem this as evil compared to Alma the Younger who took no monies.
    How is it that we have leaders today that require church funds provided by the saints for their living? I realise we are a global entity but this practice became entrenched early in the church.
    How could prophets of old maintain their livelihoods but we can't?

    • @taylorhalverson3052
      @taylorhalverson3052 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alma had sufficient for his needs because of the amount of pay that he received as a Chief Judge. He likely then saved up and lived off of those savings to finance his missions. If you consider our modern day church leaders THEY CONSECRATE EVERYTHING to the kingdom of God and then they receive back according to their needs. That is a gospel principle we all agree to but none of us (except Church leaders) actually live. Furthermore, most of the Church leaders have donated far more money and time to the cause then they will ever see returned to them. Hope that helps.

    • @Apbt-rv7zw
      @Apbt-rv7zw 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@taylorhalverson3052 a couple of things here. Are we sure that Alma had sufficient monies? How much did a Judge get paid? Was he even paid or did Alma not want recompense for serving the Lord?
      I think more likely that Alma worked both in his career and volunteered his time to serving the Lord as we read of no prophets being paid in their callings. I think they probably acted like Bishops of today in a lay ministry.
      It's just interesting that the presenters go through this comparison of Nehor and Alma and how Nehor seeks recompense which the lesson points out to be of the devil.
      I do get that the brethren consecrate themselves, but does that mean they should be paid?
      Ancient prophets also consecrated themselves and often we see them being lead to homes where for a time they are looked after physically and not financially. Have we turned the gospel of redeeming souls into a business? I had never thought of it this way until this lesson was given. Maybe like Alma our leaders could hold regular jobs (chief judge / civic officer) and be church leaders. Or consecrate as they do to the Lord but live according to what the saints give and truly having no script or purse. I see no account where Jesus asked or recieved payment as like Judas, however I'm sure Jesus found means and ways of surviving in his career as a carpenter.

    What about Alma 1:27..."And they did impart of their substance, every man according to that which he had, to the poor, and the needy, and the sick, and the afflicted; and they did not wear costly apparel, yet they were neat and comely. Or verse 30:..."And thus, in their prosperous circumstances, they did not send away any who were naked, or that were hungry, or that were athirst, or that were sick, or that had not been nourished; and they did not set their hearts upon riches; therefore they were liberal to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, whether out of the church or in the church, having no respect to persons as to those who stood in need." That's pretty much all you need to know about how the government should be run...
