I’ve watched a lot of videos because I’ve never opened up my iMac before but you are the ONLY one to explain the method and direction to detach the cables. You are a star! Thank you!
Fantastic video style. Super-clear, no frills. Tilt the screen back a bit or lay it down before removing the last screw of the screen to make sure it doesn't fall forward with the cables still attached.
A plastic soda straw works great for installing the screws holding the screen. Just inset the screw head into the straw for a snug fit. Allow some of the screw treads to protrude from the straw. Inset the straw and screw into the hole and rotate the straw to achieve some thread engagement of the screw. Withdraw the straw leaving the screw in the hole. Complete screw tightening with a torx tool.
Thank you very much for you video from a very grateful Brit from over the pond. I followed your instructions and now I have a fully working Mac. I can't thank you enough.
Is it safe to assume the changeout of the LCD inverter is basically the same for a 2008, 20” iMac? I am hopeful I can correct my black screen issue following your clear, step by step instructions. Thanks for inspiring all of us to dig deep... I’m hoping there are plenty of miles left on my old Mac!
thanks for giving me this view inside my 2008 imac ;) my lcd backlight works fine but ive noticed since around 2015 its a bit dimmer than it used to be and adjusting the brightness virtually does nothing visible.... does this mean my lcd backlight is on its way out? anyone have any experience with this? would replacing it return it back to its former white-bright glory?
Thank you for the instructions, they are very helpful. I wanted to replace my lcd imac late 2009 21,5 inch because of some dead pixels and lines. The lcd screen was stil working though. I bought a lcdscreen from ifixit, but that doesn't seem to work: it gave a very flaw light when I started the Imac but then stays black . I tried it twice, cables out and in again , but the screen stays black. Then I put my old screen back and that worked as it did before. What could be wrong with the replacement, is it the screen or haven't I put the screencables not good enough into the computer ?
great video, thank you...however after replacing the board my computer worked great for about 3 days, then the problem came back...the computer monitor just goes black at random, and i have to force restart to get it to go back on....also if i plug in another monitor the screen is visible. is it possible the new board i just put in went bad already? if so what in your opinion is the cause of that? im wondering if it has something to do with the power supplied to that board maybe? i rly appreciate your advice and opinion on this issue.
Hey, this is excellent. Thank you for going through the trouble to post this! One question - Is this a likely fix for a screen that is completely off when the iMac is running? My screen is not functioning at all. I have tried all the quick fixes i.e.: p-ram, smc reset . . . my dual head card is not working either at the moment. I can't run and external monitor but could before my current issue - (pun not intended)
Hi, if you can't run on external monitor then your graphics card or logic-board could be bad. The inverter only fixes the current to the LCD and it's very likely that the LCD it self could be bad. Although, the inverter is the cheapest thing to buy first to replace, you can find them on ebay for $10-20. What year and size is your iMac?
Hi , backlights not working screen is black when flashing with torch to screen i can see everything .when i press ctrl+shift+eject screen light up normal for second, thats mean wires and lights are ok, you think this part will solve the problem?
hey great tutorial, not to sure if thats the problem with my iMac 21" late 2009 model, it runs hot fan going fast and some times, goes to the black screen, pram reset seem to work but for how long. While the Black screen Ive shown a torch on it and can see desk top images, could be the sensor for lcd tripping due to temperature and should I reapply new thermal paste to heatsink and chips to cool things down like to see good video on it. cheers Mate.
If you can shine a light and see an image then the back light is going out so if it's not the inverter then it's the LCD panel and not the graphics card. Replace the inverter 1st as it's only $20 or less, if that doesn't fix it then replace the LCD panel, you can find one for less then $100 on eBay. Make sure all sensors are plugged in and located where they should be. There are 4 sensors, one on the LCD panel on one of the corners, one on the hard drive, one on the optical drive and last one is the most important one that is the system temperature for the main fan at the bottom left side on the iMac, usually attached to a fan or speaker (bottom left). If any sensor is not plugged in or is in an incorrect place the fans will blow like a jet engine. Good luck.
where do you find a lcd panel on ebay for 100 bucks? i need a 27" lc panel for an i mac mid 2010 and i cant find one which i could, i cant buy a new one for 500 dollars
what can i do if the fist let lights up, but the power button is not working, because the imac doesn´t turns on; i checked power supply and its output is 12v; howver i dont know how to trhoubleshoot this problem and fid out how to do a proper diagnostic. i appreciate any information or video you could provide. Best Regards
Off the top of my head I can suggest finding the two pins to short start the iMac, i don't remember where they are so you will have to look for them. In many cases you can have the first green light and the power supply is still bad.
The location of the internal connections once you start taking off the LCD are slightly different but the theory is relatively the same. I believe that by watching this video you can do a 2010 27" imac inverter replacement without a problem.
Hi, i have changed lcd connecto on the logic board, it is connected perfectly but i still no have backlight but no video, how can i fix this?? thanks man
If the inverter is changed and you got no video, then the problem could be one of 3 things in the following order, the LCD panel, the Graphics Card or the Power supply. 09-11 iMacs GPU is on board so the graphics card is not the issue. I would replace the main LCD panel next.
It's one of the following four components, they should be replaced in the following order based on cost: inverter>power supply>LCD Screen>Graphics Card(Some units have integrated graphics). The next logical step for you is to replace the power supply or the LCD panel, I would try the power supply first.
Hi I have mid 2011 imac 27 with i7, it randomly goes black but everything still works just have black screen. I followed this vid with replacing my inverter with new one and issue is still occurring. I did do smc n pram resets and no help. any other ideas? Thanks
Save Apple Dollars can this be some kind of lcd Cable that heats up and turns de lcd off because some times it takes long time to shut of the lcd. An Apple technician told me to check the cables first, if it doesnt solve it, lcd problem.
Hi, I replace a refurbished inverter in my iMac 21.5 (late 2009) but the Mac doesn't work. When I press the power botton, the classic apple sound starts but the computer turns off even before the sound ends. So, I remove the "new" inverter and I installed the old one again but nothing changed. Can someone help me, please? Thank you in advance.
Sounds like you have a bad power supply. With these imacs, one of the following is broken and you just have to figure out witch one; inverter, power supply, LCD, Graphics Card. They are priced in that order as well. Let us know if this helps.
I can only tell you that I don't know how I unplugged the plug that connects to the LCD cable, the one attached to the graphics card, but the, with difficulty, I reconnected it. Could this be the problem?
Ebay. But note that the only late 2009 (21.5" and 27") and up imacs had replaceable inverters and the 24" and 20" ones are early 2009 and before had the inverter integrated into the lcd.
The LCD panel, Graphics Card, Power Supply, they usually go bad in that order so start by replacing the LCD panel. Plug in an external monitor to see if it displays and get the serial number so that you know the exact year of the iMac then search ebay for "2X" iMac 200X LCD PANEL" where X is your year and size. Good luck.
You are looking fro something called a mini display port. alvinalexander.com/sites/default/files/users/user3/imac-dual-monitor-external.png You then need this to hook it up to any monitor www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Mini-DisplayPort-HDMI-Cable/dp/B0134V3KIA/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1499361802&sr=1-3&keywords=mini+displayport+to+hdmi
Hi, it will be great if you can give your professional advice on this problem after my I mac ( 21.5 A1311 mid-2011) was damaged by an electrical storm, a lightning hit my I mac, my main board was changed and also my video card was repaired, but at the end the screen was showing some dark flickering, my questions is, in your experience, it is problem with the inverter or I have to change or the screen could be repaired ? please, a I have a very short video of my I mac o this link...bit.ly/2DyQHAJ after the system was loaded I could see the imaged but still flickering in black, thank you so much for your time!

Hello. Is it the same procedure with I IMac 27 inch 2011? Great video👍

This means that the LCD panel is giving out from years of use. You have to replace the entire LCD.

Glad to hear that!

Sounds like the LCD Screen is the actual issue. I would replace that first before replacing anything else.
I’ve just replaced it and it’s still not working what do I do 😭

Good video bro
Thanks!
I ordered the part and since I am opening up my mac I decided to upgrade to a SSD. Wish me luck. 😆
how did it go?
So, for a 2010 imac 27" with a A1312 inverter what would be different with this installation?
The location of the internal connections once you start taking off the LCD are slightly different but the theory is relatively the same. I believe that by watching this video you can do a 2010 27" imac inverter replacement without a problem.

my imac 2009 27" got black suddenly :( is it the inverter that i have to change? and is it the same inverter like for imac 21.5 "?

The next logical step for you is to replace the power supply or the LCD panel, I would try the power supply first.
I would recommend nitrile gloves when doing this. Easier to prevent fingerprints than to get them off later.

Next would be the LCD Panel, then power supply, then graphics card, if that model has one.
Save Apple Dollars, ok so today I hooked up external monitor and when the iMac went black the external stated on. LCD u think?
Yes, I would go with the LCD next.
Save Apple Dollars can this be some kind of lcd Cable that heats up and turns de lcd off because some times it takes long time to shut of the lcd.
An Apple technician told me to check the cables first, if it doesnt solve it, lcd problem.
What can I do if the LCD screen became yellower?
That's a common issue with these units. You have to replace the LCD panel to fix it.
thanks mang
Your welcome :)

Ebay. But note that the only late 2009 (21.5" and 27") and up imacs had replaceable inverters and the 24" and 20" ones are early 2009 and before had the inverter integrated into the lcd.
