Mono compatibility is the secret to a good mix. Sum to mono, work to make that sound great, and pop back out to stereo. It will solve a lot of the issues you likely run into. Not to mention make mixes sound better in compromised playback situations: on the phone, in cars, in restaurants, over a TV sound bar (watching TH-cam for instance).

FOH tech here, shout out to Mick's clarification re guitar causing the most potential problems with the vocal translating clearly out front.
I would like to imagine (ahem) most techs don't ask for guitars to turn down just for the sake of it, but rather because they are causing some kind of issue which is having a net negative issue on the overall mix.
Not to say loud amps can't work, they certainly can! I've had the pleasure of being at the desk for Ariel Posen and Bros Landreth shows (amongst others) and been blown away! And as a lifer guitar player, ive particularly enjoyed the loud amps.
Can't overstate the importance of the player and their dynamics though in getting it all in cohesion. There are few things more damaging than an inexperienced player dead set on a loud amp (in my own experience)

Thank you for this. Totally agree about the player and the dynamics. Dan and I have often remarked - perhaps somewhat controversially - that loud guitars aren’t the problem. Horrible tone and bad playing are the problem! Hahahaha!

Vocals are there to hear the lyrics. Lead vocal is there to carry the verses. Background vocals are there to harmonize with the lead vocal and to carry the choruses. Drums are there to keep the time because vocalists usually cannot. Drums are not to be allowed to "dominate" the singers. Bass is there to cement the drums to the rhythm guitar. Keys are there to augment the rhythm guitar. Piano can (but should not regularly required to) provide bass rhythm melody and harmony. Keys, in a band mix, must NOT usurp sonic territory of any other instrument (including vocals). Lead guitar is there to augment the keys and lyrics, melody, and harmony. The lead guitarist provides rhythm, comp, fill, and lead. I caries the brunt of the song. There may be a requirement for two or three guitarists if one cannot handle all three roles. To bury the lead guitarists is to "gut" the performance. Separate instruments by frequency range of parts provide. Do NOT attempt to "balance" sound by volume alone. Separation of performer roles should be set in approximately 3dB increments. Lead vocalist -3B equals background singers. Piano and rhythm guitar (including any played by the lead vocalist} fall in with them. Bass and drums should be no louder. Lead guitar needs to be between the bass and drums and the lead vocalist - due to the sparseness of playing. EQ the lead guitar for "mids" and set volume NOT for perceived volume. In a congregational setting, total volume should be set to allow audience to hear themselves sing.

I absolutely have a guitar that I keep for sentimental reasons: as Covid was wrapping up the worst of it, my parents decided to do up Christmas right and they gave me an Epiphone ES 335 Pro and it is my favourite guitar, and not just because they gave it to me, but because it is a brilliant machine. I’ll be leaving it to my kids when I check out of this mortal coil.

Taco question: the tortilla is a component, and traditionally the tortilla is soft.
A quesadilla might be considered a sandwich, being 2 flat tortillas with filling between. But then technically it would be a melt.

I recently decided that tuning always falls short without first setting intonation. Intonation allows for more accurate tuning for any fingering used - at every position along the neck. Since guitar can only be tuned "relatively" intonation is required as the basis for limiting those relative errors by averaging them.

I have tried to set up a rig for preferred tonal quality using either fully hollow, semi-hollow or solid body guitars and concluded - it can't be done. Each type of guitar plays best when set up for it. Certain individual guitars simply need a dedicated set of components to sound their best (to my ears).

Dan and Mick! Love you guys. Being a huge SRV fan? I thought that a tube screamer is the only overdrive I needed. I have an Analogman TS 808 silver mod and a Maxon 808. Thanks to watching you guys for a while? I got the idea of getting myself a more transparent OD. And after much researching online through the forums I stumbled into the Barber LTD pedals (low gain OD). I first bought the gain changer but I wasn't happy with it. Mainly because it sounded like a pedal. So I went for the older versions and boy!!!! Happy days! What a great Overdrive pedal. There are different versions of them in the EQ section. Some having more/flatter mids.I liked the first one that I bought so much that I bought a second and different version. I have the LTD SR (secret recipe) and an LTD silver. They sound fantastic through my blackface amps. They have an internal trimmer pot for bass and presence (set and forget). Brilliant stuff. I know that you guys demoed the gain changer. But was hoping to see a transparent OD pedal shootout including the Barber stuff? And of course this led to others. Klon clones (2 Mythical Overdrives) and a Wampler Belle OD 😂. Great stuff! Cheers mates

    Traditional Latin Taco :
    2 (!!!) corn tortillas,
    dip in consommé,
heat on comal (or flat top grille),
    flip once,
add your slow cooked marinated meat,
    fresh rough dice white onion,
rip some cilantro off for topping,
    or pico de gallo,
eat as many as you can!
And of course all variations are acceptable pending deliciousness. Just like music, why not throw some goregrind with your delta blues. YOU know what you like, but hey doesnt hurt to try the original. D&M if youre ever in Oakland, california i will make you real tacos + pupusas

    Order a Torte Lengua.
Spicy Mexican tongue sandwich. Keep in mind the type of bread is crucial.
P.S. Canadians need to get their Geese in a row for free postage
P.P.S. I've mostly have gotten out of the tone game and have pared down my pandemic collection. My simple pedal array is what I need for my core tone and I'm happy with that. The one guitar that I own and might never part with is a nylon string Ovation from the 1970's. I can quietly, depending on my mood,, go from attempts at Segovia, to attempts at hot jazz, to attempts at Dick Dale and attempts at everything in between. It's the one guitar that never frustrates me and always makes me smile.

On the Hiwatt.... I am about to start building a Mojotone Custom 100 based amp.... This may be applicable to yours as well.
Obviously caps do need to be checked out and replaced if there is any doubt.
But, if the Hiwatt has a flaw??? It's the bias circuit.... More importantly the low 50VAC bias winding resulting in only about -38VDC bias voltage through the half wave rectifier.. This will definitely give the amp an appetite for smelting EL34s... But also, remember, that "setting EL34s on fire tone", is part of the sound too.... Biasing the amp as hot as possible is something you'll want to do....like 75%. Also, this largely a huge part of why Hiwatts are so loud ... They literally run at 110W... Check out Fryette's Hiwatt restoration videos.
There is the common voltage doubler bias mod circuit available online.... One other option, also with less wiring mods is to use a full wave bridge rectifier module on the bias winding, into a slightly modified circuit on the turret board. Fryette, however is opposed to any mods. I see the supply of tubes as being short these days, and they need to be biased within limits to last.
In my case, I settled on using Mercury Magnetics power transformer that has a 70VAC winding for bias.

Selling seems an immoral concept, although, I have done it. Trading up makes more sense to me. I enjoy change for the better, even at 2 or 3 for one. I do keep some things I rarely use if only because they have, and may again, fill a certain need. Remember that things which are held onto cannot fill a need another may have. I like to set "things" free to serve another.

I try, but cannot enjoy listening to bass without drums. Bass players very happily demonstrate their prowess. But, without the synced timing of drums, I just hear lower notes. I'd rather listen to solo guitar (not jazz). I play solo (not jazz) guitar often and have considered getting a base, many times, and then I pick up a different guitar.

Re: “I think Soup needs to be savoury” My fiancee’s family is Chinese, and nearly the only desserts they have after dinner are indeed soups, and they are sweet. One is a red bean soup, which tastes vaguely peanut-buttery and the other is a black sesame soup, wthich is actually quite delicious. They can be eaten hot or cold. Usually cold in my experience and, as such, are quite refreshing. This is quite common in asian countries. You are welcome to reclassify them as cereal, but the vast majority of earthlings would probably disagree.
