My dad bought my mum this machine as a wedding present in 1959. It’s still sewing ❤

I have a Bernina 117 which was made in 1942. I inherited it from a 90 year old lady who worked in a factory. When the factory closed she bought the machine in its treadle table. She and her sister made blouses for money. She made all her children’s clothing and all her sheets, tablecloths and curtains. At some time a motor was installed and connected to the machine with a leather belt. The old lady went blind at about 80 and do stopped sewing. When I inherited it I oiled it and attached a crank handle to test it. It ran dead quiet and is awaiting a motor.

My mom had Bernina tastes (and skills), but a Singer budget. Still and all, she splurged on a Singer 403A in 1959, the one she made my clothes on (how I miss that!), the one she taught me to sew on, and which I still sew with today. Proper workhorse, even after all these years. But wow, having a Bernina just spit out the ribbon stitch with a simple switch! And the sound of that machine is amazing! No wonder she gave me the advice to get a Bernina if I could, someday. But today's Bernina machines, like the Singers, are not what they used to be.

I still have mine 1250 Bernina that I bought new in 1990 for $1200. All the feet etc. still works beautifully and I wouldn’t trade it in for any newer machine. Love your channel. Thank you!

Love the video. I've just been given a beautiful Bernina Matic 910 Sewing Machine. How Blessed I feel, it's like a Royal Royce (thought I've never been in one!) : ) Does anyone know when they were made and how much they were? The pins are broken in the metal sewing table, can anyone advise me where I can get new pins from and how to fix it? Thanks loads in advance _/\_

Lovely, didn't know older machines did all the fancy stitches so simply. How would it compare with the featherweight 222 ? Thanks Alex.

I am certainly no Alex, but I have my own sewing machine repair shop and YT channel. The Singer 222 has a slightly narrower free arm, (I believe). But it too has the free motion table and is all metal parts. They sew beautifully!! They are only a straight stitch, but that doesn’t mean that the 222 is a bad machine in anyway. Its just different. I love the 221, 221K, 221J, & 222 that I am putting together a Zoom class for people to learn how to service them from the motor out! Fantastic little VERY capable machines! The only thing that can make that series of Singer machines better is some of today’s feet and other accessories that weren’t available back in the day, and an LED bulb!

The old Berninas are just a cut above.
Made my wedding dress on a Bernina minimatic in 1972.
Mother's machine so I had to buy my own.
Couldn't afford a Bernina, so I invested in an Elna, Swiss made.
Stated a home industry and for 15 years that machine worked day and night and when I moved to England from South Africa I sold it and it is probably still going.
In England I felt lost without a sewing machine, so invested in a new electronic Bernina.
    What a disappointment.
It has put me off sewing.
Are you selling that Bernina and would like more info please.

Are there any plastic internal parts at all on the 530? I have a 700. Do you know if it is all metal internally?

It has two nylon gears, which are the achilles heel of this series. However, they are very visible, so you can easily check if they are broken or not. If they are intact, then the machine should be able to be put back into excellent working order. The same goes for the 730. I have no experience, however, with the 700.

Hello, I have a Bernina record 530-1 and have been having some issues with the balancing wheel and the knee pedal. It seems as though the balancing wheel and the knee pedal are not engaging properly and that is slips at times and I have to turn the balancing wheel to assist it along. It was just looked over by a gentleman that had everything working well and I came along and somehow messed things up. I am also a beginner sewer and am thinking that it is something that I have done incorrectly and am wondering if you would be able to assist me in solving my problem?

Hello. I was hoping you could help me with a query on this machine. I've searched and searched emails various people who have the same machine and left the question on comments page. But have not heard anything back. Does this machine have an off center straight stitch setting? My one is set to the left and I only discovered this when I put the darning foot on. If I set it up for straight stitch to darn it sets to the left and will not go through centre opening. If I move dial to center needle it will zigzag and not straight stitch. I have the manual and correct feet but I just can't get it to straight stitch in the centre. I'd appreciate any advice you can give. .I have a heavy duty semi professional frister rossmann and this one has off set needle to the left and was made this way. Its the only other machine I have come across with it.
    Kind regards
    Debbie

Sounds like it needs a drop of oil and some tlc in the right spot. It should be able to straight stitch in a centre position. The dial for the zigzag width is built around the dial that sets the needle position. You should be able to operate them seperately from one another. Maybe they got stuck together somehow.

Hi. Thank you for getting back to me. Since last posting I have cleaned oiled run and let machine stand. I have managed to get it up and running and do every stitch it has. But still unable to get straight stitch in middle as per manual says. However it will stitch perfectly in the middle if I move the regulator on top of machine (section for changing when pattern stitches are in use) to the middle. Other than this it will continue to do perfect straight stitch with needle position at left. Underside stitching on all stitches is perfectly balanced. I sampled 6 layers of denim, 12 layers of 100% cotton, 9 layers of thick calico, and sandwiched 2oz of polyester wadding in between 2 layers of cotton this looked beautiful when done. Its a work horse. This machine is about 60 years old and is by far one of the best I have used. I however am a real suckker for drop in cam machines. There's something so appealing and soothing about dropping one in and watching the mechanics get to work. Sorry I went way of there. Thank you once again.
      Kind regards
      Debbie

Hi Alex, - I have an old Bernina 700, Typ AM2-70 and am quite lost with it in some aspects. I can´t get the bottom thread to work properly and don´t know the machine at all. Could you steer me into the direction of some documentation or manual maybe? Would so much like to use it... thank you!
