You forgot to mention that when sting first came back on nitro in march 1999, he had longer hair to start the year. But I did notice that sting was slowly cutting his hair short just before his return. And by the very end of 1999, his hair was very short, and he kept it that way.

Even editorials commented on this. One of them stated that for someone like Sting, who has literally jumped out of hospital beds to wrestle, been selfless in repeatedly offering others the limelight even in his prime when he needed it more (Johnny B Badd, Bulldog, Hart, Luger, ...) and often stayed long after everyone else had gone to meet fans and sign autographs, long before the social media period; was hard to believe as a heel no matter how vile an act he could be shown to do in the ring.

As for the health factor, Sting due to his wrestling style (240 lb+ guy showing feats of strength to match most and flying like a cruiserweight) hag lagging injuries pretty much shortly after the early 90s, with at least three concussions, broken ribs and compromised knee to add to the list. It was his prime fitness, ditching drugs and healthy choices that led him to longevity and passing over those injuries. It was Sting's no contention factor however, and politics that led to botches (like 'Cade w. Hogan), loss to Goldberg (albeit one of the matches made Sting look good where Hogan interrupted a scorpion deathlock on Goldberg), and even Sting losing two in a row to Hart (even if it involved shortcuts or interference). WCW just never had that sense of self importance to let its prime star shine definitely in front of former WWE/WWF stars, whether it was a Prime Hart or whether it was a turtle speed Hogan. A shame, that was pointed out in then honest published editorials. Sting had even agreed selflessly to job to Muta, Rude and Sid, when WCW wanted it, and fans at each of those losses were never convinced. Bad decisions for WCW and of course, the outcome was eventually in front of the world.

This era of WCW was a mess. I mean in storyline, I still have no idea why Hogan was the valiant babyface and Sting heel at the time. Before he got sidelined, Hogan did the most heinous things from the fingerpoke of doom, jumping Flair on his way to the arena, making David turn on Ric. Savage too was not safe and was flip-flopping from heel to face then to full heel when he won the title THEN lost it to Hogan a day after. Nash suddenly turned heel too. Like everyone was turning heel for some reason in the coming months starting from after DDP won the belt, it was ridiculous. Like did Hogan just told the bookers to turn everyone heel when he'll return as a face? And guess what, WCW fans bought into it until enough was enough in the Russo era

I think it could have been great if it wasn't poorly executed. You had legitimate history there they could have drawn from Sting's motives to turn heel and very simply.
I would think this would be obvious at this point, but Hogan originally betrayed Sting and wcw at Bash at the Beach 96 as his turn as Hollywood Hogan and the chaos that would ensued with the nWo.
I don't understand why they didn't use that simple detail to push Sting's heel turn "Revenge" plane and simple the whole time Sting held a grudge against Hogan and was simply pushing Hogan out of the spotlight that he was hogging for years.
It's frustrating because there were aspects about his short heel run that worked, but they blew it after a month.
Almost everyone that was babyface in wcw in 98 and 97 were heel in 99. Sting could have started a pre main event mafia with Luger, The Steiners, Bagwell, and DDP and them running roughshod on those who wronged them

It created some interesting new situations and it took the edge of Sting's by then dated goody-two-shoes aura. once stgarted, they should have let it run for a while.

I personally rather enjoyed Sting's heel run like I enjoyed The Road Warriors' heel run in '88. Crowds didn't boo him but they liked the idea of him as an evil man. Like I said elsewhere, it freshened things up and introduced all sorts of interesting new situations - Sting and Luger the former top babyfaces as top heels, a babyface Flair versus a heel Sting and Luger, Hogan and Flair forming a Megapowers style babyface alliance, Sting as sly heel champion versus hot prospects Chris Benoit and Bret Hart.

I would have had the recently reunited Steiners form an alliance with Sting and Luger (DDP was unnecesy) and have them feud with a new Four Horsement of Flair, Benoit, Hart and Hulk Hogan with Arn Anderson as manager, leading to a War Games match. And I would have kept Sting as a heel for a year or so before getting him into a feud with another heel so as to slowly turn him back to babyface.

Sting is way better as a face than a heel. Don't think he was a full time heel, he was more neutral.

The idea was that Lex was the real heel, he had finally led Sting astray.

WCW had HUGE stars at that point, but Russo is who killed it with bullshit like this. Garbage storylines, etc.
