This documentary was made only 5 years before antiretroviral drugs came on the scene. So sad that these people died such a short time away from the life-changing and life-saving drugs.

I lost an aunt to this dreadful disease in the year 2000, this documentary is a solid reminder of how far we have come and we shouldn’t forget those we have lost and the fact that the battle is not yet over, we should continue to fight till we find a cure.
Thank you so much for this documentary.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's so sad there is still such a stigma attached to this virus. It's a virus. That's it. It's not a moral issue. It's not an indicator of how good or bad someone is. It only means you were dealt a bad hand. No one should have to defend their character while battling a life-changing disease. How cruel could someone be to judge someone going through the fight of their life? Especially when an HIV diagnosis meant certain death. I'll never understand it.

Why did she die? I mean in 1996 there were retroviral medication to become undetectable and live a normal life. Did she not take her medication? Because people now can only take one pill a day and they become undetectable. They can live a normal life’s. They can get married they can have sex without a condom without transmitting the disease to the partner they can have kids the normal way. It is a long ways from the 1980s and 1990s

My former neighbor was infected by donated blood in 1986. Then in the early 2000s he was notified that he had again received infected blood, this time with HIV and Hep C. He has hemophilia so he requires blood injections. He’s still alive and is now undetectable (after developing full blown AIDS) and went on to have 2 children, both HIV negative. It’s amazing that he survived the 10 years after diagnosis and before the “cocktail” was available. RIP to all who didn’t make it 🙏

Really? Check this whole thread from beginning carefully ! A lady called nikicarrie4071 started a long discriminating thread of how he killed his wife. So unfortunately it is on here , so it’s still on going battle to educate people, she victim blamed him by saying he was obviously gay and infected his wife. Shocking it’s all shocking that she said that but she did it’s all here to read what she said. Although the majority on here are sensible and educated people to know that no victim is to blame for this terrible virus . It was not a crime to be Gay and ir was not a crime to have AIDS , But unfortunately there is victim blaming on here a lot. 😔💔

I was amazed at how engaging he was with me and he really went out of his way to educate me in his office. Even though at the time I didn’t really know who he was, I could tell he was the White Knight on a horse for the pregnant woman of Houston. This was around 2005 and I remember him saying that we can control it now. It’s cool to see him here in this documentary. One of the pioneers at a very scary time.

My best friend died in May 1995. He deteriorated so quickly that I was just in shock when he finally passed. He was barely a week out of the hospital, at that point it was clear he would not be returning to his job so we were making plans for his long term care when he just started going down hill.
AIDS at that time was still spoken about in hushed tones in the gay community.
When you didn’t see someone at the club or gay hangouts you’d hear they passed away, sometimes when you didn’t see someone you’d just assume the worst.
I came out in 1991 when the gay community was bombarded with safe sex ads and gay porn actors wore condoms.
Last summer I visited what used to be a gay hangout and saw a familiar face, one of the gay men I’d see out and about back then but never spoke to. We just hugged when we saw each other because it seems all those men we knew back then are now gone. We were there, we survived and will never forget.

I was very surprised to see that in Houston, despite the necessary precautions, the doctors and paramedical staff have treated patients with the respect they deserved since the beginning of the pandemic, visiting with their bare hands, knowing that this was possible. , given that the transmission of the virus did not occur through simple contact. It's a beautiful message, knowing that somewhere, HIV-positive people weren't locked up in large dormitories, left almost without contact, and when this happened they were all covered in overalls, as if they were in the presence of Ebola... Certainly the Houston patients will now be in Heaven I hope, but I was moved by the humanity and dignity with which they were treated in this video. I understand that especially at the beginning, fear makes us take extraordinary safety measures, but once we understood the mechanisms of contagion, it was useless to treat human beings, often rejected by their families, as plague victims, they were victims of a system that was fallacious. No one will forget the shameful cuts to healthcare, made by Presidents or Ministers, thinking that the virus affected only three categories of the population... when they understood that everyone was at risk... it was already widespread, and they left millions of people to die. In 43 years there still isn't a vaccine or cure, which everyone has access to, it's shameful. And unfortunately we are observing a new global surge among the youngest... I thank God for always remaining healthy, even if I have lost many friends or acquaintances.

To be honest in the beginning mostly homosexual men got it in America, but in Africa it was heterosexuals who got it the most. I theorized it was like this because of who was the most promiscuous at the time in that geographic area. You see in America in the early 80s women still lived under the stigma of being a ho or prostitute if they were openly exploring multiple sexual partners. Most women during that time period in America still believed in monogamy and marriage. In Africa it was the same, BUT misogyny is high in places like Africa and Latin America. Many men found it acceptable to step out on their wives, and with many partners especially prostitutes. Even rape is more prevalent in those locations. Here in America the homosexual community was the most promiscuous. Mostly due to the fact that they didn’t have to worry about unwanted pregnancy, and it was a time right off the cusp of the free love era. It was not a gay disease and therefore inevitable that it would eventually spread to other demographics around the world, but that’s why I believe it hit the gay community first and so swiftly in America.

It’s true for all of us, and many people just wont accept that truth. This disease was 100 percent avoidable. Even if you don’t believe in the Bible, Gods word warned us about refraining from every single method of transmission, even down to the blood. People say it was a curse from God but that’s a lie! However he did know these things existed and has warned us from the beginning of what is right, and wrong. We just get mad at him for trying to tell us what to do, and not do. We get mad at his attempts to protect us from things like this.
